505 Games has confirmed Terraria will be released on the Switch eShop on 27th June. Prior to this, we found out the alpha build of the game had been sent to the original developer Re-Logic at the start of this year.
In the same announcement post, it was also revealed a physical version of the game would be released at a later date. Here's the announcement from the Terraria forum:
You read that correctly. Terraria Switch will be live to the world for digital download in 2 days! We love our fans, and since the game is ready, we figured we would just get it into your hands as soon as possible. It will take us a bit more time to get out the physical retail version, but until then we hope you will enjoy the full game available for download via Nintendo eShop.
This will be the third time Terraria has been released on a Nintendo platform. The title was first released on the 3DS in 2015 and followed up with a release on the Wii U in 2016. If you haven't played it before, it's similar to Minecraft, but has definitely carved its own niche within the survival crafting genre.
Will you be adding this to your Switch digital library on release? Or will you hold out for a physical copy? Tell us below.

I just pre-ordered Mario Maker 2! You guys can't do this to me ;w;
I thought it was already out lol
Damn it... I might have to get this, Minecraft just doesn't work for me the way Terraria has. (PS4, Wii U, and 3DS versions)
@mgnoodle I was just going to say the same thing! Thought this was out for years on Switch, lol.
Great game. I own it on PC version and its worth every penny.
I once bought a physical version of this (PS3 I think) and there was nothing but a download code in the box.
I might pick this one up. I've had the PC version for years, but other games have always gotten in the way.
What's the price?
I think I'll get it because my sister LOVES this game and we're always looking for games that we can play together.
Wasn't this one of the first games announced for the Switch? Lol.
Good chance I am going to buy it though, I love this game.
@JayJ So was Shin Megami Tensei V and we still haven't gotten any news about it...
@Dakotastomp It costs $30 US. I feel like the price for this version is a bit too much in comparison to the others. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions currently cost $20 US.
Also Terraria was announced for Switch in 2017 with a release in the same year.
my lil bro was looking forward to this for a while, this should be fun for him lol
@Thorthegreat12 In that case it’s better to wait for a sale. $15 would be more reasonable for a game this old. But it is great this is coming to Switch because the only way I’d play this is handheld. It just feels right for this game.
Been waiting for this because I love Terraria. Worst timing ever though with Mario Maker coming out this week. Not sure if I'll grab it at launch because of that but I will at some point.
@Thorthegreat12 The Switch tax is murder on some of these ports. Might as well stick to my tablet version.
Will it allow you to move your data to the switch version?
A solid game. I have it for PC and iOS.
@NotTelevision Totally agree. The mobile and 3DS ports so far have felt a little bit off to me. As a handheld game it will be at home on Switch.
@Dakotastomp There is no cross compatibility with save data or multiplayer at the moment. Pipeworks (the porting devs) hinted at cross platform multiplayer a while back.
Of all the games that were released wrong this one seems to be the only one that got release right and it's a game I play to death already.
Considering how long this took to port, I imagine the team assembled for the job was one-day who messed around with it in his off-time.
At least this is finally inbound, though. A Hat in Time is still MIA.
Sorry, too late and wrong time! Mario Maker 2, Bloodstained and Graveyard Keeper are keeping my time. Plus I have this on PC, Vita, Xbox for years.
Very good game so get ut when it goes on sale next month...
Sorry pass, too many much better games out there.
$30 is just too much for me. I waited so much for this game but guess I will wait a bit longer until a sale
@NotTelevision This game is only $15 on the Vita. It seems ridiculous to be paying twice as much for the game on the Switch.
I never played Terraria. I did play Mostly Tigerproof's hilarious knock-off, Glittermitten Grove, though.
@JayJ Yeah I think it will end up at that price in due time. If it was a brand new release then I would understand the $30, but it’s almost a decade old now.
I think the same thing about Binding of Issac. I got that game for 5 on PC and on Switch it’s still going for $40. I don’t get it.
@NotTelevision That's the notorious "Switch tax" that people complain about. Sometimes I can justify it but often times I cannot. It can get even worse when you try to buy physical versions of games, especially the limited release ones.
I’ll wait for a sale, but will most definitely be picking this up at some point. My kids and I have played this to death over the years.
Though you’d think they’d wait for a week when another highly anticipated crafting game (Mario Maker 2) wasn’t coming out. Kinda shooting yourself in the foot there guys.
@Thorthegreat12 No buy then.
I will wait for the physical version will be too busy with mm2 hahah
Finally! But yes. I'll wait for a sale. Have it on my Vita, PS4 and iPad already.
Fez next please indie gods.
One day before MarioMaker2, worst time possible to release a game.
Overrated game. Hope the switch version is more playable than the PS3 version.
Wait, already!?!? Pipeworks was sort of vague in their latest State of the Game update. Now I have to rush and get enough money to grab this! (Might wait for the physical release)
Rather just get Mario Maker.
I might pick it up on a sale, but for now I'm happy with my Wii U version, which is perfect IMO. Buttons for platforming/combat, stylus for precision building/crafting.
@Ralizah We finally gave up on waiting for A Hat in Time on Switch and bought it on sale on Steam a few months ago. Probably on sale right now, every game on my wishlist was according to the email I got this morning.
My son plays way too much Terraria on PC. And listens to the music (excuse me OST) all the time, but I don't think any of it is from the original game, all mods, which I'm guessing the Switch won't get so he probably wont' want this.
Just signed up for NO yesterday (his account so nobody else is able to play Tetris 99 but him and he doesn't want to, go figure) in anticipation of the pre-loaded SMM2 being playable on Friday. We should be good to go for awhile.
@rjejr You can get AHiT + the OST and all DLC expansions for roughly $21 on Steam right now.
a typical indie game. it didn't please me. But good for the ones who loves it
@Ralizah Thanks. My kid doesn't buy music, he just listens to it on Youtube. His words, not mine. He has the first DLC but the 2nd one was only on sale 10% or 15% so he'd said he'd wait since he's buying Spelunky for 80% off for $2.99. He wanted Spelunky the end of May but I wouldn't charge $14.99 to my credit card for a 4 year old game I knew would be 80% off in a month.
My kid showed me this website, SteamDB, that shows the history of Steam sales for every game. Summer and winter sales are very predictable, almost no reason to buy a game there at any other time.
This is the Spelunky page, you can search for whatever game you want at the top. (You may already know this stuff, no offense meant.)

I was going to say FINALLY when I read the headline. I didn't think they would do a physical release. Looks like I'll be waiting a little longer. Which is fine I wanted to get Graveyard Digger this week.
I CANT EVEN, JUST, FINALLY...
😊😊😊😊😊😊
I'm personally not into having Terraria on my Switch, but can see how it's a perfect fit for the console. Not for me--but maybe for someone else!
@rjejr That is a great resource to determine whether or not a game is worth full price. It's how I've decided whether or not to buy games, and I couldn't recommend it enough.
@Fake-E-Lee I prefer it to MC. There's a crapton more items, more biomes, more focused endgame (lots of bosses). Some say its hard to play on console, ive had it on ps4, vita and 3ds... it was supposedly going to be a launch title and one of the games I bought my switch for in the first place. It feels like binding of isaac in terms of content.
The switch to 2d doesnt detract from the building possibilities, and to be honest, the restrictions imposed by only having two dimensions go in its favour by forcing more focused, tight designs with less fluff.
I wholeheartedly recommend it. It is a fair bit more expensive than it is on other consoles, Im happy to pay up for it, but you might wanna check out a couple of youtube vids just to be 100 sure.
If you like the rpg aspects of minecraft, this will scratch an itch you couldnt previously reach.
@Deltarogue mate I’m crying, that’s beautiful.
The loading time for this game takes the piss.
@hadrian How u finding Graveyard Keeper ?, Is it fairly easy to play ?, sorry, yeah my patience levels are too low to sit for hours trying to work out complicated controls etc.
