Nintendo just released a truckload of new information about Super Mario Maker 2 in its latest Direct presentation. One of the highlights of the 15-minute clip was the news the game would receive its very own story mode.
In this mode, you take control of Mario and your task is to rebuild Princess Peach's castle. To do this, you'll need coins and a lot of them. This means accepting jobs from the bulletin board and then playing through courses to help fund the construction. There are more than 100 levels hand-crafted by Nintendo, with plenty of expert designs on display. As Mario progresses, he'll also encounter new characters who award him with even more coins. Exciting stuff!

Forgot about the direct, made comment and headed right to YouTube to watch it.
Looks like a pretty solid package all round, and I can't wait to see what new levels people come up with.
I guess it's no real surprise that they expanded on the pre-made content a bit. Happy with this addition but also not too excited by it.
This isn't the "make your own world" mode I was hoping for but none the less I'm interested. Sadly I missed the direct cause I fell asleep while waiting on the video to start.
@BenAV I think I would get this with a year of free online.... But I don't think we will get that in NA.
Sweet 6th comment! I hope yellow toad didn't die for toadette!
The story mode was a surprise. A good way to keep the players yet more busy.
I think I need to watch the direct again. I was watching with my son and I think his head almost exploded with sheer joy. Meanwhile I am trying to watch and listen to the presentation while he talked non stop about what kinds of levels he is going to make.
They seemed to throw a ton of new and interesting stuff at us very fast for parts of it. I'm excited to see some of it again.
I’m excited and it’s gonna be fantastic.
If your a mario Maker fan. This has to be the best direct.
I don't think I'd get it personally as I'd never have time to build any levels, but wow that's a lot of content!
Online multiplayer Mario Maker. THAT IS HUUUGE.
@WiltonRoots Just like the last version, I'll probably spend most of the time playing other people's courses.
I hope my Mega Pixel Mario amiibos still work.
@VR32X Yeah. We saw nothing about Amiibo support. They might be saving that for E3, hopefully
The 3DS version has a great story mode with the pigeon Yamamura and tech support woman Mary O. It is a big improvement over the Wii U game. I'm betting this Switch story mode will be even better, but I do hope we get to see more of Yamamura and Mary O.
Nice to see 3DS Mario Maker's (only) good feature being brought back.
Like that it helps the player feel more of a sense of accomplishment completing the Nintendo made levels.
Hopefully amiibo support will be talked about at E3!
This gives me hope for a Story Mode in a future Mario Kart.
@insertcoin2play Ahhh yes there is that...it will be like a never ending Mario game.
My game of the year
Story mode makes a lot of sense. Over 100 Nintendo made levels? Honestly this is so people who will never buy an online subscription can still have a reason to buy this game. I mean main 2D Mario games have less levels.
My wife loves Mario games but has no interest in making levels or playing other people's levels since a lot of them end up being lackluster. This story mode might give here reason to actually play this game. Local multiplayer may also give her reasons.
Looks like they’ve found a good way to make the coins matter. I wonder if they might have done the same with 1ups. 100 Mario challenge made them a little useful, but mostly there’s not much incentive to put them in levels as rewards. No mention of creating even old school 4 level “worlds”, which would also make them more valuable if you could run out before finishing.
Also just thought about this, I wonder if the cranes and low gravity levels are hinting at some Super Mario Land 2 themes. It just reminded me of that. I would love to see a few more themes and would not be surprised if the held some stuff back for the invitational and E3.
There was far more than I expected in this reveal. I was already sold on day 1, now I'm kicking myself for booking a flight abroad in Bangladesh for a month whilst the game releases!
As a previous owner of both NSMBU and NSLU on Wii U, I was suffering from fatigue less than halfway through the Deluxe port on Switch. HOWEVER, with Nintendo’s own story mode and the prospect of tons of user created levels that Super Mario Maker 2 will bring, I’m hyped for some 2D Mario once again. Roll on June 28th!
@The_Pixel_King I’m glad I held off from the port. I’ve seen many trades of it at GameStop too. I was replaying it on Wii U with my lady and... honestly Mario U was just not that exciting. This new Mario Maker however looks insanely fun!
Day one purchase for me.
This mode seems interesting, kinda reminds me of the super Mario run castle builder.
@gokev13 I feel ya. My kids were going nuts and it was hard not telling them to shut up cuz I wanna listen. I succeeded. I'm a good Dad. Had them talk about it upstairs while I watched it again. 😊
@TadGhostal
That's pretty funny. I haven't watched it again myself. I know my son will want to watch it a bunch more times. I don't blame the kids being excited though, I mean I could only dream of a game like Mario Maker as a kid, and yet now here comes a second one and it is stuffed so full of nostalgia plus new features that I cannot help but feel excited like a kid again.
No word on the existing Wii U levels. They may not transfer easily since now there is verticality support and what not.
Oh well, I can manually port my better Wii U levels over (and improve them).
@Onion and Leeds utd lost to Derby and are gutted.am a liverpool fan so heals the wounds been from Leeds.
Great news. To be honest, I have barely played the first game, I don't love building for the sake of it and if I enjoy Dragon Quest Builders so much it's because of the story. Not interested in the Terra Incognita mode.
What I wanna know is why Peach is apparently so dang poor that she has to ask Mario to do EVERYTHING. Like wow woman what kind of Princess are you lol.
@WiltonRoots same here. I can't be bothered to play a game I made. Finishing levels won't feel the same
Didn't the first Maker have 100 Nintendo-created levels? So this isn't all that surprising. It's nice to have.
I was holding out for a reveal like this. Pre-ordered it today.
Story mode just made this game go to my must play list.
This really surprised me. I was not expecting a story mode. Granted, I don't see it being anything other than the shallow, "we gotta reubild the castle" but still, it's a welcome addition.
MM2 is looking great. Lots of improvements and additions, though, I did not see any mention at all about amiibo, which was odd. I guess we'll see if it's included.
Peach needs to raise taxes.
@Ryu_Niiyama maybe she has a congress that’s been bought out by the Koch brothers and she can’t?! Can Mario save her from the worst villains in all existence? Bowser is nothing compared to the Koch brothers.
Peach's castle isn't there because she traded it in for a REALISTIC-LOOKING VERSION!!!
I fear most levels will be very short, thus it might not be enough meat on the bones for me. I mean: I won't get Nintendo Online, so I can't play other people's stages. And there don't seem to be unlockable 8-bit characters either. So for single-players without "Online" there's only the story mode...
