Just yesterday, we shared the news that Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! will feature 'Master Trainers' - "really powerful trainers" who can be found after you've completed the main story. New information has now been revealed for these intriguing battlers, and it sounds like we have a mighty challenge on our hands.
A lot has been said about the difficulty (or lack of) in these upcoming titles since they were initially revealed, with the overall tone definitely leaning towards an easier experience catered towards those who might be new to the series. To find out more about any potentially trickier challenges in the game, Eurogamer asked Game Freak executive director Junichi Masuda, and designer Kensaku Nabana, just what the more experienced player can expect to find.
Masuda initially responded by highlighting the 'catch combo' mechanic - an in-game feature which rewards you for catching the same type of Pokémon over and over again in a row, but discussion soon moved to the previously revealed Master Trainers.
Kensaku Nabana: And also the postgame content as well, in particular the master trainiers - so these are trainers who are kind of the ultimate trainers of a specific Pokémon, so you will challenge them. So you will challenge them, and then get their title for that Pokémon, so you become the master of that Pokémon if you manage to beat them in battle.
Masuda then went on to explain how this works in a little more detail, revealing that there will be a Master Trainer for every single Pokémon present in the game (ignoring Meltan).
Junichi Masuda: So for me, my favourite Pokémon is Psyduck, so I'd be training my Psyduck amazingly and then would challenge the Psyduck Master, and then gain the Psyduck Master title, and that's something you can put a lot of effort and a lot of time into, if I really wanted to create a challenge for myself - and these Master Trainers exist for all of the 151 Pokémon in the game, so you know, if you want to collect all of the titles then that's something you can really challenge yourself with.
The specifics aren't 100% clear here, but it would appear that you need to train up a particular Pokémon to then challenge the master of that very same Pokémon (who will also battle with that Pokémon), and you'll need to do this 151 times if you want to be the champion of everything the game has to offer. Masuda did go on to suggest that this might be the only real post-game content, other than grabbing Mewtwo and completing your entire Pokédex, of course, but it sounds like a rather substantial undertaking.
Does this sound like an interesting feature to you? Will you aim to be the master of all Pokémon? Share your thoughts with us on this one in the comments below.

Keep it coming, slowly convincing me. Still kinda on the fence but the game is looking pretty good.
Sounds fun. Just that little more post game content would be good, USUM really nailed that.
Well this should certainly appease some of the "hardcore" fans. Now give us a "classic" mode where you have to fight every wild Pokemon before catching it and I think Game Freak might actually make everyone happy.
So, 151 kinds of Endings ??
This is the first thing shown off that actually has me somewhat interested. I still am not sold yet, however.
So if you need to have it be a same Pokémon vs same Pokémon match you need to catch all 151, then level them up to 100ish and challenge the master?
Can't wait for the Magikarp master!
@ilikeike How is that veteran in any way? It always just devolves into False Swipe + Spore (or some other status effect). It's just sooooooo tedious.
I think the term you're looking for is "Classic"
@Ernest_The_Crab That actually is the term I was looking for, thanks! For some reason it slipped my mind, I'll edit it in.
Built in nuzlock run would convince me.
@TheFanatic really? For me USUM lacked post game content (1,5 hours and my time was gone) while Black (2) and White (2) and Diamond & Pearl + Platinum had more non-story content (new areas).
Opinions differ but except the story S&M and USUM lack post-game content for me.
Can't wait to fight the top percentage Rattata master.
@AxeltheBuizel That's the first thing I thought of, as well. Not only would you have to train a Magikarp, but you'd then have to battle a trained Magikarp. With a Magikarp. That's a whole lotta karp.
@ilikeike np
Still sounds lackluster when you compare it to previous titles such as G/S and R/S (or even OR/AS). I’m disappointed. He just admitted that the only challenge in this game will be fighting random trainers in the post-game.
@Rayquaza2510 Oh, I’ll certainly concede to the fact that the DS entries had far more post game. However, with Team Rainbow Rocket, Mantine Rides, Side Quests, Ultra Beasts and Ultra Wormholes, I’d say USUM was pretty good. In fairness, Sun and Moon was pretty lacking comparatively.
That's actually some solid end game content that would actually take some effort to complete. Nothing will ever beat Heartgold and Soulsilver's post game but this isn't too shabby.
Crazy excited for this. Now if only I could decide on Pikachu or Eevee.
@HobbitGamer @AxeltheBuizel guys we’re forgetting the even more important one... we get to recreate the metapod vs metapod battle from the anime!
And like, realistically that will be even more tedious because you’ll have to slowly chip away at the health of a max boosted defense metapod... a few hardens in and it will become torture!
This could get interesting where Kakuna, Metapod, and Magikarp are involved. X3
Shut up and take money .... throws cash at computer monitor
Regarding Magikarp, Metapod, Kakuna and the implications;
Nah.still a pass for me
Ditto should be fun as well.
So there's even a Master for Mew and Mewtwo, and the legendary birds?
Finally there will be an Ultimate Challenge for us, Venonat Masters! Yep, all the 3 of us!
@ilikeike It needs out. I simply won't consider buying this because of motion controls and the catching mechanic.
Options please everybody. It's not an unrealistic ask.
@ilikeike Nahhhh man. Now I don't need to deal with being smacked with the poison sting/leech life from every Zubat in Rock Tunnel and Mt Moon.
For that reason alone I am pretty into these games.
@HobbitGamer That's nothing. Ditto master would be insane.
@Tropicallo @HobbitGamer I was just gonna add ditto, how the heck will that work? Guess struggle is a thing...
@ShadJV The struggle is about to get so real. Voltorb master will be a rave to see if you can beat them before they self-destruct.
@Kalmaro XD at least that would be over fast!
@LUIGITORNADO so really you won’t consider it because of the catching mechanic. Since you don’t have to use motion controls.
Okay, I found online how ditto works against another ditto... the faster ditto transforms into the slower ditto and the slower ditto... fails. It can’t transform into itself so the move fails. Faster ditto keeps transforming, refreshing its PP every turn. Slower ditto runs out of PP from failed transforms and then starts struggling. In other words, to beat a ditto with another ditto you need to be SLOWER. Unless they change the mechanics of transform.
No wild battles still kill this game for me but this seems to be giving it CPR.
I've always wanted to be a Metapod Master, so this is great news.
Nothing in that quote suggests you need to battle them with the same Pokémon.
Only have money for 1 game before smash and I think it will be Diablo, although I like the fact that there is post-game. This wont make my choice easier
I'll be the metapod and kakuna master in no time.😂😂😂
So he said he would train his psyduck. Funny considering there really isn't a way to. Is he going to just go on a pokemon hunting spree? What does he mean by training?
@HobbitGamer that's a whole lot of splash lolp
I think what kills this for me, is the overemphasis of catching the same pokemon over and over. It makes them feel less like teammates, and more like a hoarding addiction.
@Kalmaro what about abra?
@whanvee
Abra is able to learn other moves through TMs.
All the reactions & comments to Pokemon Let's Go always seem to neglect the fact that the "veteran" Pokemon game is coming next year in this new casual/veteran core Pokemon game combo, all the while bemoaning all the casual nuances of Let's Go.
Our turn will arrive soon, but let's at least attempt to knowledge that Let's Go is quite the gracious landing pad for Pokemon GO players looking to dip into mainstream Pokemon.
@Tropicallo hmmmmmm, never knew. Any of the ones from the first gen?
@whanvee yep, abra can learn 24 different TMs in gen 1. I always taught my abra a couple TMs because why keep just teleport on it?
Edit: technically 22 TMs and 2 HMs. Point is, it has LOTS of attack options.
@whanvee I assume trainer battles. Do you primarily grind via wild encounters? Because that’s way slower than just doing trainer battles.
I would have been happy with a reset of all the trainer battles +20 levels.
All I want is Youngster Joey to be the Rattata master.
@whanvee LOL, I don't think you can teleport away in a trainer battle though so we should be good. How about a lapras battle? Perish song time.
I’ve been an adamant Let’s Go hater, but I have to admit that even I am started to get tempted here... damn nostalgia.
I think the lack of wild battles wouldn't be such an issue if the trainer battles weren't so stupidly easy (with most trainers only having 1 or 2 Pokémon). I want to battle full parties. I want to feel like I'm battling bona fide trainers, at least with greater frequency than we are given.
And surely there would be some mechanicism to grind as we wouldn't be able to do so without the ability to battle other trainers repeatedly (unless EXP is given for catching a Pokémon... I can't recall whether that was the case with Let's Go).
@Kalmaro : In Ultra Moon, I was pretty furious when I found a Lapras and it used Perish Song on me (I was unable to catch it). I found another one eventually, but it was a tedious grind.
How do you even train in this game? With no wild Pokemon battles, you can't really EV train or even grind... Which is perfectly fine in a regular Pokemon story but not for something like this.
How about an actual challenging pokemon game that teaches youbhow to play online.
Getting it day 1.
@ShadJV usually I do. Since I clear most trainer battles quite quickly and am left with very little choice.
@ShadJV Never taught him a thing, now I feel foolish. I would wait until his evolution to actually start using him in battles. Before that he would be first in line but never fight. Besides I always horded TMs, I was always afraid of wasting them on a crappy pokemon. This was all in the original Red version, when I actually didn't know all the evolutions. So I was just flying by the seat of my pants. I did always like Abra's sound (voice, creature intro????), his evolutions too. They sounded quite unique. I think it was a psychic pokemon thing because drowzee and hypno were also pretty unique.
At first I was going to make a comment about wanting to be a Magikarp master but after reading how this is a Pokémon vs Pokémon thing i’m more curious for that ditto master fight!
@whanvee well thankfully now TMs are reusable but like, it wasn’t particular hard to find TMs abra could use, nearly half the TMs work on it.
And outside of first two gens, there have always been a way of fighting trainers indefinitely, whether it’s an area where they constantly spawn or a way to rechallenge the same trainers. Heck, that’s technically not even true because EVERY gen also lets you refight the Elite Four which is one of the best sources of EXP. There’s no reason for postgame content if you constantly gotta grind in the grass, that’s too slow. So I’m sure you’re not expected in this to grind everything through catching wild Pokémon, there will always be ways to grind via at least some trainers (and I doubt with all the QoL improvements in this there will be no place to fight trainers over and over).
Another collection feature aside from the Pokedex? I'm definitely in
Great. So to beat the game and beat the Master Mew trainer I would need to suck up the PokeBall Pay to Win accessory price and then play postgame with 1vs1 battles instead of actually great master trainers?
Great.
Good thing I canceled my preorder already.
Is it only me or fighting a Pokémon with the same type is just Stupid... (And boring)
Give me difficulty options and then we can talk.
