As brief as the 3DS showcase was in the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast, there were still a number of new announcements. Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn – a remake of the charming Wii game from 2010 – was one of them.
Due out in 2019 for 3DS, all was rosy until a listing on Nintendo’s official website suggested the game would only be compatible with New Nintendo 3DS systems. Oddly, there was no mention of this during the Direct presentation and even the game’s box art referenced no such compatibility requirements. The PR also reinforced this, by saying it would be released on the “family” of 3DS systems.
At the time we said the chance of it being an incorrect listing on Nintendo’s website was plausible, and sure enough, Nintendo has now amended its web page for the game. The listing simply shows “Nintendo 3DS” with the word “New” finally dropped. It’s safe to say, the game will be playable on every 3DS system.
The new version of Kirby’s Epic Yarn will include features such as the ability to craft even bigger yarn balls, summon bead-collecting wind, outrun a demon in a new Devilish Mode and play two all-new mini-games featuring King Dedede and Meta Knight.
Are you planning to buy Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn now that it’s coming to all 3DS platforms? Do you own a New 3DS and this was never a concern to you in the first place? Did you play the original Epic Yarn game on the Wii? Tell us below.

not at all surprise. it was an error afterall.
Nice I'll probabaly snag this..never played the original though.
The New 3DS ended up being almost as pointless a revision as the DSi. I really hope Nintendo doesn't make the same mistake with the Switch. Releasing a very slight revision and only a handful of games that actually make use of it.
It would be nice if they could follow the pattern Sony and Microsoft did, of a more expensive more powerful Switch with games that have the ability to take advantage of that extra muscle, but don't require it. With the difference actually being noticeable, unlike with the DSi and New 3DS.

@Heavyarms55 "The New 3DS ended up being almost as pointless a revision as the DSi."
I disagree entirely; the New 3DS smokes the old 3DS, and any serious fan upgraded. The super stable stereoscopic is worth it alone, you can play all games in 3D comfortably now. And the right nub stick and extra shoulder buttons are invaluable for tons of games. Combined with the faster processor, and more stable famerates, the New 3DS outclasses the old in every way.
I think I'll pick this up as it and Luigi's Mansion seem like a great send off for the system.
It never striked me as a game that "needed" the new model anyway. Still, nice to see!
@SuperWeird Lol "Any serious fan upgraded" You're right, and we got jipped. Only a handful of games make any meaningful use of that extra power and 5 3DS units and literally thousands of hours of gameplay, I never found the 3D affect appealing. It was an annoying gimmick to me, one I used only when absolutely needed in a handful a games. The extra buttons were rarely made use of as well, because only a handful of games were made for the New 3DS. And not even all of them made use of those buttons!
Don't give me no crap about being a serious fan. I dumped thousands upon thousands of hours into it. I carried one around with me every day for half a decade! Over 5000 streetpasses and every prefecture in Japan.
But the new 3DS was a let down in the extreme for me. I bought it when it launched because I thought Nintendo had learned from the DSi and would take proper advantage of the update. They never gave us Virtual Console GBA titles, only a small selection of SNES, and a tiny selection of New 3DS exclusive full releases, even if one of them was Xenoblade Chronicles, my favorite RPG of all time...
@Heavyarms55 it might be a gimmick to you but other people use and enjoy the 3D capabilities of the 3DS systems.
I'm glad it was an error all along, of course I would had prefer it on Switch instead.
If I had to guess, this will be enhanced for the New 3DS, perhaps running at 60 fps, just like Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World.
That’s cool, I could play this on my 2DS then. It’d be more handy on Switch, though, so I’m not sure when I’ll actually get around to picking this up.
@SuperWeird I’m a fan of games, and got the New 2DSXL. Then I hand to downgrade to 2DS because of comfort. I find it easier to play for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Can’t wait to get this game. Love Kirby and yarn art style. Love being able to use it via handheld.
Epic Yarn Kirby is 40% off on MyNintendo.

I may pass on this but I want to know the 3DS version have multiplayer or not. If the 3DS version does then I will definitely pass on this Wii version.
Well that's good.
@Heavyarms55 I also disagree with you. New 3DS has some serious upgrades, some of them should have been included in the original model.
Knowing Nintendo, a Switch revision is inevitable and will probably be released next year and fix some of the issues of the original hardware.
On topic, I skipped the Wii version so I'll get the 3DS version of Kirby's Epic Yarn.
@SuperWeird Guess I'm not a serious enough 3DS fan, since my regular 3DS XL suffices for me.
I don't see in 3D, so the effect is useless for me. I own I believe two retail games and one eShop download that have support for the right stick (Majora's Mask 3D, the revision of Ace Combat, and 3D Afterburner II). And only New 3DS enhanced releases benefit from the faster processor compared to the originals, which is an extremely small list.
I'd like a New 2DS XL and probably will try to get one before the end arrives down the road, but only because I'm a fan of the platform and have already put a lot of hours and wear & tear on my original. The upgrades weren't worth the premium for a New 3DS XL when I finally hopped onto the 3DS bandwagon back in late 2015 when I bought a new 3DS XL on sale at a big discount, and don't justify the upgrade today for me.
Good god, they want $40 dollars for this. And Nintendo wondering why their stuff gets emulated like crazy.
They get my cash for Yo-kai Watch 3
@Heavyarms55 As far as the New 3DS being pointless, yes and no. I was disappointed that so few games took advantage of the more powerful processor. It does seem like they got cold feet and didn't follow through with their plans to use it as an upgrade. That said, the improved 3D is great, the Amiibo reader is occasionally nice, and having the right side camera stick is a game changer for Monster Hunter games.
This might look nice next to my Yoshi's Woolly World. Never played the original either.
Ehh, I'd call the New 3DS a nice upgrade. Not really necessary but the extra tech and screen upgrade was very nice. While true, not a lot of exclusive games were released for it, the fact they got Xenoblade running complete, bar Japanese vocals, on it at all was amazing for me.
My big complaint however was they did nothing to upgrade the amount you can download on the system, only displaying 300 downloads at a time within a max 32GB Micro SD card (Yeah you can trick it to go 64GB but I'm too scared to do that.). Before you say switch out the cards, easier said than done since you need to unscrew an XL model to do that and with how tiny the things are, getting lost or broke can happen very likely. True its better than the Vita's own storage solution but if they went to all the trouble of switching from SD to Micro SD, surly they could have gone with bigger cards and allow more downloads though the extra tech inside to handle and load it fast. For someone who brought an OG 3DS at launch and has long past 300 games, its just an annoying issue. I thought they wanted us to buy as many of their digital games as possible?
Now, if they did a 3DS Elite that allowed 128GB cards or more and/or had on-board storage and allow downloading 1000 games or more along with the usual hardware upgrades, I'd buy that day one. XD
@ALinkttPresent I mean, knowing my original 3DS can run this game after all is more important news than a lot of stuff that floats around these news sites, so I appreciate it.
Aw, dang, and I already bought a New 3DS XL just for this game.
...okay, not really. But I'm totally going to get this, in any case.
I still mistake "yarn" with "yam" by the weird font
@Heavyarms55 Idk, new 3ds can play Xenoblade. That's neat. And it has a second stick which the 3ds should have always had.
I'm surprised Skyrim isn't on N3DS.
@Trajan Yeah, and the DSi also had a handful of exclusives too. Nintendo did a little better with the New 3DS revision, but still not much. They should have treated it like a new device with backwards compatibility to older DS and 3DS titles, rather than just a revision. Then they could have made it a much better device with much more support and possibly further upped the power and resolution.
Not that I am upset with the end result, I love my Nintendo Switch now.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah, the "new" name is dumb.
I actually picked up a 2ds xl earlier this year, 6 months after buying a Switch. I really like thr Switch, but the 3ds is a much better portable imo.
They should have renamed it, bumped up the display, and use a modern touch screen.
Maybe the next device will be a 3ds/Switch hybrid...
Man, some of guys flipped your sh*t in the previous story about this, lol. Of course it was compatible with all models.
@BlueOcean If there was an issue with tbe software, they'd just update it. And releasing a switch revision next year would be a grave mistake. You can't just get everyone on board with your device and then upgrade it so quick, thats just a big middle finger to anyone eho invested early on.
Also there's debate on whether they will revise the switch, since they never revised home consoles (except the wii mini) so they may not revise the switch.
@Trajan I'll concede that the smaller size of the 3DS/2DS is easier to carry around in a pocket, but I have come to love the larger single screen.
@Heavyarms55 So to YOU it was a pointless upgrade. Got it.
@SuperWeird
“the New 3DS smokes the old 3DS, and any serious fan upgraded”
Comments like this make me laugh. Basically it says if you didn’t upgrade you’re not a serious fan, you’re a casual and should leave us super serious fans alone. You shouldn’t even be posting here. [removed]
@Heavyarms55 Honestly, I think that making games exclusive for a special type of 3DS is very stupid. It's not a new handheld, no, it's a new type of 3DS.
Aside from the point that you're splitting the 3DS owners, there are so many ways to make a new type special without putting exclusives on them (which will sell poorly, because most 3DS owners don't have the New models for example).
If you look at the PS4Pro and Slim, every game is still playable. The Pro just runs them way smoother. No need to split the PS4 owners, because they can all still play the same games.
I think Nintendo did great with the N3DS, although there are some issues with it ofcourse. Better 3DS, better screen, another new stick, good and new positioned shoulder buttons. The new CPU is nice and although not that much stronger compared to the old one, it does run significantly better.
This upgrade is only for those who want a better version of the 3DS, like me. It's not a complete new handheld which can run exclusive game and it shouldn't try to be.
@Angelic_Lapras_King All you have to do is format your SD card to the FAT32 filesystem on your computer (which is easier than it sounds, it's just one click) and any size will work. There's a 128GB microSD in my 3DS and it's working just fine, and it's pretty useful considering most of the games I play are several GB each, so I'm not even close to hitting the 300 icon limit (which, I agree, is tremendously stupid).
@VexingInsanity The DS Lite was released little over a year after the release of the original DS, fixing nearly all of the issues people had with the original.
The upgrade to the new 3DS / 2DS series is not pointless. Even though only a few games require it, many games actually have better graphics and / or load times on the new 3DS / 2DS. Also it has a C-stick and additional shoulder buttons which work in a lot of games as well. And it has NFC built in.
It's like most PC games would run on a GTX 970, but if you want the best you'll have to get a GTX 1080 ti.
@Saego There is no reason for an upgrade that doesn't do anything new. That's the same crap Apple pulls when they release 27 versions of each iPhone.
Only a small handful of games made use of minor changes it made. Thus pointless. The "new features" of the the revised "New 3DS" were hardly taken advantage of, and meaningless for all other games not designed for them.
Look, I am sorry if you guys are getting all triggered by me pointing that out, but that's just how it is. It's not a matter of opinion, only a very small portion of the 3DS library makes any use of the new features that were added.
If you want to play semantics, then yes, it should have been treated as a new handheld, not a revision.
I am not saying the 3DS overall was a bad system, I loved the thing, I owned 5 of them! But the fact is that the "New Nintendo 3DS/2DS" revision was very very very weak upgrade and ultimately, almost entirely pointless because they hardly used it's improved power or additional buttons.
@Angelic_Lapras_King The only way I'd ever consider purchasing yet another 3DS is (baring something destroying the ones I own) is if we got a true new system that simply had backward compatibility with the existing library. Or if they released a version with a GBA slot. But I totally agree that the download limit is weird. I am no programmer, so I don't really understand why such a thing would be needed, or why they couldn't change that with a software update.
@Heavyarms55 If you hack it, you can unlock the extra processing power for all games. It's great and makes everything snappy to use. Comparing them side by side, the older model chokes on everything from loading games, settings, exiting to the home screen, framerate in games, etc, whereas the New 3DS reacts instantly. Of course, Nintendo never enabled this extra power by default, so many of the improvements across the board were only visible in a limited amount of games, so we're lucky it's possible to hack the system to unlock its true potential.
Seriously, this is my favourite of all the Kirby games, and actually one of my top platformers of all time. Its only negative is not being able to properly die and fail, so it loses that slight sense of satisfaction, accomplishment and pride you have when you truly overcome a difficult challenge that has consequences for failing. Other than though--and it's still a sheer joy to play in this world regardless--it's a genuinely brilliant game.
If they've listened to the criticisms regarding the difficulty, which I think was basically universally raised in every review, and done even something small to adjust and improve that one issue slightly, then this could go from like a 9/10 in my book to a 10/10.
@c2017nlifemedia Well there's not many issues with switch hardware. Plus if they were gonna do a switch XL they'd have done that by now. This is also a home console too. I think its unlikely we'll get different variations until a next gen switch comes along. A switch U maybe hehe. But then again just my opinion
Still playing and loving my 3DS. I wonder if Nintendo decided a long time ago to hedge their bets and continue supporting 3DS in case the Switch went the way of the Wii U. A few ports was quite smart; most of the work done already so low production costs. Perhaps a shame that they are not on Switch too, but a proportion of the 3DS install base will likely be very pleased to have continued support.
@VexingInsanity The kickstand is just rubbish and the wifi chip is atrocious (writing this, my Switch is sitting two meters from my router and it only has three out of four bars reception), the internal storage is way too small if you buy anything digitally, the charging port doesn't follow the USB-C standards so you can't just use any third party charging cable, and the screen could be a bit more scratch-resistant, but otherwise I agree, it's a solid and well-built device.
@c2017nlifemedia I wonder why Nintendo would do that. They must have some reason.
@SuperWeird 'any serious fan upgraded'
Can we have less of this gatekeeping nonsense? Not being willing or able to spend $200 on a different version of a console you already have doesn't make you any less of a fan.
New 2ds xl is the best version of the 3ds available. Its just so comfortable. I used to have a new 3dsxl and had to "downgrade" to the new 2dsxl cause I just couldn't play on the older one without getting cramping.
@Heavyarms55 There's probably a minor influence on battery life (as in a couple of minutes). Also, there are a couple of games where the extra power breaks the game. I can't remember which ones, but I think there were only 5 at most. In any case, Nintendo could have easily worked around those issues by adding a blacklist of game IDs that aren't allowed to use the extra power. My guess is they just didn't bother.
Wow, NintendoLife you're late on this. They fixed it like a day or two after the original story (as I thought they would, given that the Japanese equivalent of the page did not mention incompatibility with 3DS and "3DSLL").
@c2017nlifemedia You can use any USB-C cable that follows the spec.
You can't use other docks however.
@Moonlessky Only thing wrong with it is the speakers are in a terrible location.
What about the Nintendo23DSXLlite micro i &knuckles featuring dante from the devil may cry series aces?
@Heavyarms55 But it does something new, even though it might not be the changes you think are worth it.
The 3D is better (new), all games run smoother (new), new buttons, new sticks (for me the reason to buy a new one). Might not be the whole 3DS library that supports all these new features, but Monster Hunter runs great and a stick to control the camera is great.
If you don't like it, then don't buy it (day one).
Does Nintendo or HAL think Kirby games are for 3 year olds? Kirby's Epic Yarn was ridiculously easy and then they release Kirby Star Allies and a remake of this?
I hope Sakurai comes back at some point.
@VexingInsanity It's true that Nintendo rarely updates their home hardware but it's also true that their console cycles are at the shorter side of the range. 3DS has five different models. Is Switch a home console? Nintendo considers it a hybrid console and most people around here consider it a handheld. Would that be a "middle finger" as you say? Well, it wouldn't be the first time that Nintendo do that to their consumers. It's quite typical of them.
@BlueOcean I think I'm putting them on a bit of a pedestal because its not me that shells out for them. Thanks Mum and Dad! Hehe.
@VexingInsanity Oh, spoiled boy! Well, I was one too...
Nah, they are not perfect but they have made perfect classics. Better software than hardware lately, but still...
It's games like these that have me debating getting a New 2DS XL to replace my 3DS XL. Along with my Switch, and Persona 5 (I'm on PS3, don't judge me) 3DS just has a TON of great, evergreen games that I want to play in it's library. These remakes are just icing on the cake!
Kirby's Epic Yarn itself was a blast, but I lost the disc, and haven't played my Wii in a long while anyway. It'll be nice to have this on the go and finally complete it, though I expect minor cases of rage to come. Kirby games feel so manageable, that I'm always kicking myself for not getting every collectable in a single session since the games feel so easy. Epic Yarn seemed to have a TON to collect, and a few missteps could mess up a perfect run.
Oh well, the charm and fun will outweigh the rage in a heartbeat, so no worries
@SuperWeird don't forget that the New 3ds also has an improved wireless chip so WiFi downloads are considerably faster than on the older systems
Hats off to the technicians that worked hard to make this game, DKC Returns, Captain Toad, as well as Wooly World, all look as nice as they do on 3DS.
No small feat, and no small feet either.
I mean, these characters all got massive stompers.
