One of the highlights of the 3DS showcase during the recent Nintendo Direct was the announcement Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn - a remake of the charming Wii game - would be released in 2019. It'll include new features such as the ability to craft even bigger yarn balls, summon bead-collecting wind, outrun a demon in a new Devilish Mode and play two all-new mini-games featuring King Dedede and Meta Knight.
If you were looking forward to revisiting the 2010 classic on your modern handheld system, you might need to check you've got the right one first. According to a listing on Nintendo's official website, the game will only be compatible with New Nintendo 3DS systems. Oddly, there was no mention of this in the Direct presentation or on the game's box art, and the PR stated the title would be released on the "family" of 3DS systems. The chance of this being an incorrect listing on the website is also plausible.

The New 3DS line is known to handle games a lot better than the original systems, with improved performance and frame rates. Nintendo has also previously made games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D exclusive to the system.
Were you planning on picking up Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn? Do you own a New 3DS? Did you play the original Epic Yarn game on the Wii? Tell us below.

That normally affects sales quite a bit. I hope that at least it has multiplayer like the original.
First the crappy online service and now this....oh Nintendo why???
I never actually beat Epic Yarn, but I don't recall it being very, erm... graphically intensive, so I find this a bit strange. As I have a New 3DS XL, this doesn't have much of an affect on me, though I hate it for the slim number of people that are effected. The 3DS remake will give me a good opportunity to finally beat it, and I'm glad they added an option for Kirby to take damage, so I'm actually quite looking forward to this. I hope it supports 3D, but I'm not expecting it.
@roy130390 I doubt it, since Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot lacked full multiplayer co-op, despite running on the Return to Dream Land engine. Would be nice though, especially with Luigi's Mansion getting the added functionality.
The game is too epic for the original 3DS I guess
@Not_Soos Yeah, I also have the same feeling... let's hope we are wrong. It will probably lack the 3D effect too.
That’s a bit... extra if you ask me
In all seriousness though, this hopefully shouldn’t effect too many current 3DS players since most probably have a “New” system anyways, still sucks for those who’d want to play but are stuck on older hardware
It was in the 3DS portion of the Direct and they only said 'Coming to N3DS', not 'Coming to Switch and N3DS'... why would you assume it'd be on the Switch...?
I loved Epic Yarn (though I may discard it due to relationship stuff), but I don't see myself double dipping for what was shown.
thaaat's why the graphics look so good
I tend to use my regular 2DS for day to day use but fortunately have a New 3DS for those games that need it. Will pick this up as Kirby has been pretty great on 3DS and it will be nice to finish on a high.
seems odd that Yoshi's Wooly World (a Wii U port) can run on the original 3ds but this game (a Wii port) can't.
I’m still using my launch-day aqua blue 3DS, so this news is a bit disappointing.
All I have is a 2ds(not xl) so it looks like I'm not going to be able to grab this one? Unless I'm confused. I honestly don't know the differences between all of the 3ds systems since there's a few iterations.
I just wish they'd do these re-releases on 3DS AND Switch! Especially with Wii games and Nintendo's art styles in general being very suitable for quick 1080p releases.
The 3DS doesn't need exclusives at this point anyway, it can compete with the Switch just fine thanks to its absolutely enormous library and far, far lower overall costs.
The cheapest 3DS variant being 80 bucks, game included, with games of 45 bucks or less vs Switch with a 300 price tag, no game included, and games costing 60... yeah! It can compete just fine).
Have to admit that I'm a bit biased against the 3DS family though. Never liked it's uncomfortable design, crappy resolution on a tiny screen and low battery life, always making me wish I could just play its games on something better...
Interesting, seeing as with other New 3DS exclusives they made it very clear it was for specifically the New 3DS, to the point where I'm inclined to say that line was probably a mistake
Surprised considering the game doesn't look that demanding
@roy130390 At the very least, I'm sure multiplayer would require two copies of the game, just like Luigi's Mansion or NSMB2 or, heck, even Kirby Superstar Ultra. As I know none of my friends will get the game, it doesn't affect me one way or the other, but for your sake I hope it's included. For me the inclusion of 3D is the bigger question, even if I'm fairly certain Nintendo's stereoscopic 3D is what caused my darn astigmatism.
All this talk of local wireless makes me curious if NSMBU Deluxe will include it. Would be a nice edition, and I think it's a shame the Warriors games don't allow this, so both players can grind for their own save files while playing together.
I can’t believe it’s been nearly a decade since the original...
@g_ruz
This was also my first 3DS ^^
@Not_Soos It was a little graphic-heavy, requiring 31 blocks of Wii memory compared to most Wii games' 1 block. 3D won't be available, alas. (I'm a Kirby Wiki admin, of I know this stuff. ^.^')
I have a New 3DS and a New 2DS XL. So there would be no problem.
But I still own this on Wii, didn't finish it until today.
But I really liked it, normally I'm not into Kirby Games. But this one is awesome.
Maybe I'll sell it for Wii and getting this for 3DS
They were able to make Donkey Kong Country Returns work on original 3DS, not sure why Kirby's Epic Yarn is so different. Same for Xenoblade Chronicles.
Kinda weird but it could be an error since Sushi Striker also was marked as "New exclusive" but changed before launch.
I'm not exactly affected though, i got a N3DSXL anyway.
Still amazing, that the 3DS is getting kept alive. A few years before, I would have never believed, this System makes it into 2019. And while it's weird, that the 3D isn't even used anymore. I like it, the last year's really brought good games on this. Wario Ware Gold, Hey Pikmin, Metroid 2, Detektive Pikachu, Picross 3D Round 2... In all those years, the 3DS really got a good System
"Else stick with the Wii version"
Har har. But being a Wii port and having a lot of fancy stuff happen in real time likely has everything to do with it. And they can sensibly expect most of the userbase to be buying or have upgraded to New line anyway, especially since it got its own budget 2DS option.
@NerdyBoutKirby Well, that's a shame (albeit probably best for my eyes). Thanks for the info! Out of curiosity, how does that compare with a game like Mario Galaxy's file size?
Probably a mistake by NoA. I see no mention of New 3DS only checking the Japanese page.
If they wanted it on New 3DS, they would've specified it be on New 3DS. Simple as that.
i think it's an error. otherwise the boxart for the game would have said "New 3DS" and not just "3DS". guess will find out soon enough though.

@Aozz101x Agreed, I believe it's an error as well. The official box-art can be seen here and it seems to be the original 3DS packaging. Perhaps it's a case like Woolly World where it'll run at a higher frame-rate on the New 3DS and they simply goofed the wording?
This game will bring my New 3DS out of retirement.
And still they can't make it play in bloody 3D. Such a shame, srsly...
@retro_player_22 Nintendo has become too lazy to be bothered.
@NerdyBoutKirby I'm so, SO very disappointed with the lack of 3D. What a deal breaker.
I’ve never been able to beat the dragon on the Wii version. And Kirby’s meant to be easy grrrr 😊
New 3DS only...2D game...no 3D...WHY IS IT EVEN ON THE SYSTEM?!
Seriously Nintendo, I love you, but you're making some really weird decisions these days.
I imagine it's probably just optimised for New 3DS, the way Smash 4, Pokemon Sun and Moon were.
New 2ds is also capable surely. It has the faster processor doesn’t it. No mention of that in this article or comments
Everyone complained that the New version wouldn't get many exclusives. Now let's complain that it gets some ! Because why not ?
It’s playing on a new 2ds in video.......
Cool by me! Epic Yarn is without a doubt my all time favorite Kirby game and I've played through it at least once a year every year since it came out on the Wii. It's kinda my go-to comfort game whenever I'm sick with a cold, and I do have a New 3DS XL so I'll definitely be picking this one up. =)
I hope thats its wrong
Not surprising. I think a lot of people grossly over estimate what the original 3DS hardware could handle. Honestly Pokemon's 7th gen should have been New 3DS exclusive too. Among others. Many later games on the system just barely ran. Pokemon in specific could barely handle some of the Z-moves and other special animations. And although it was never confirmed, I bet you fully that rotation and triple battles were cut from gen 7 because regular 3DS systems couldn't handle it with the other new features.
If correct, that is good news. It did seem as though Nintendo had given up on 3d. The Mario and Luigi remake games should have been 3d as well.
As long as Kirby is not a 3d swan song to 3d.
Whether or not I buy this game depends entirely on whether or not it features stereoscopic 3D. If it does I'm in.
This is the first I've heard of it being for the New Nintendo 3DS, I personally think it's odd if they choose to as you can't really buy the New Nintendo 3DS anymore only pre owned ones.
@sandman89 The new 2DS XL plays all new 3DS XL exclusive games, yes
If this is true it only means it won't be playable on the original Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS.
I have to assume this is an error (read: Wooly World point). Maybe it's because only the New 2DS is still being pushed?
“Were you planning on picking up Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn? Do you own a New 3DS? Did you play the original Epic Yarn game on the Wii?”
Yes, yes, and yes!
I'm in a minority who don't buy old games twice, I still have my Wii U attached to TV & play time to time its titles, as well as some Wii's too, also have Wii for GameCube & most Wii games. I use my 3DS to play original NDS & 3DS titles, DS Lite for GBA games. I've PS3 which give me an access to libraries of PS1-2-3 & Vita for itself & PSP games. When I bought Switch it was for new decent games only. Same for my upcoming PS4 purchase - no remakes / ports / GOTY editions, I don't feed laziness. So if I ever want to replay this neat little gem, it'll be on Wii or Wii U where it's dirty cheap & not on 3DS.
I'm hoping it's an error, as I'm still using my 7 year old original 3DS. I've considered upgrading but I don't really feel like spending over £100 on a console I effectively already have.
@SuperWeird Unfortunately I'm pretty sure it was confirmed not to have stereoscopic 3D.
@nhSnork @Deku-Scrub @Not_Soos from what I can gather from financial reports, lifetime 3DS sales come to 72m, of which at most 27.29m are New 3DS/2DS models. Or put another way, almost two-thirds of the systems out there won’t be able to play this (if true). Even if every New model was replacing an older model (which is unlikely, plenty will be entirely new to the console or multi-console homes), that still leaves almost half the potential user base alienated.
Assuming that “most users have upgraded” and the older model user base is slim seems a little off base to me (but as I’m still rocking my launch day Aqua-Blue model, I may be biased)
All my bases are covered on this. I have a New 2DS XL and plan on getting this since I mainly play on my 2DS anyways. Can’t wait to get this.
I don’t see it being exclusive to the New line of 3DS anyways. If it was exclusive they would have said it in the direct.
Many have already moved on from 3ds to the Switch with recent titles by Nintendo selling below par on the 3ds. This will just shrink the sales for this title further. I picked the title up for the Wii for next to nothing (£3-4 pounds) so will not be buying again.....
If you have a Wii U, Epic Yarn can be bought on the eShop
@Not_Soos I'm not sure about that, but it's pretty large for a Wii game that looks so simple. Every character is a yarn outline pretty much, and each has to stretch and squash based on movements. Given how huge each stage is and that there are, like, 48 stages in total, that makes it take up a lot of room.
Honestly it doesn't matter to me either way and neither does the 3D. It looks fun and I have the New 3DS anyway.
Should have been on Switch.
Dolphin. Runs at 60FPS with 2X SSAA and 16X Ansiotopic Filtering (takes up 3% of Ryzen5 - and the 1070ti does not even boost)
"EXTRA EPIC" 😏
Nintendo need to stop being so frustratingly stupid eith this years ideas.
The game should probably be ported to the Switch if it is indeed a New 3DS exclusive, as losing access to the rest of the 3DS install base is really, really bad.
Actually, the game should be a Switch exclusive period. No new 3DS game of 2018 has sold very well all, whether they were New 3DS exclusive or not.
Epic Yawn.
Does that mean that this cutesey game will have that bad-ass black box here in Europe? That'll look weird...
It seems like a mistake not to bring Extra Epic Yarn to Switch, considering it comes right out of the game with a second character and ease of multiplayer on the hybrid.
Not bringing it to anything else than New 3DS seems like an oversight.
Oh well. I switch backwards from a N2DSXL to a 2DS a few months back (and don't regret it at all!) for comfort. I may be skipping this entry, but I still have tons to pick up and play anyway.
What I'd really like is for this game to run natively in 4K with full-res textures on all those soft materials~~~
@NerdyBoutKirby
Oh no, so they are not using 3D for Epic Yarn? Real shame as I will have to give it a miss, would have been great if they had added it.
@heathenmagic
The game likely pushes even the New3DS quite hard, and for the 3D-effect to work, double the pixel-output is required. :/
I'm guessing it works fine, only it would butcher the framerate.
Thanks for that. I guess it makes sense, its good they are making the effort for New 3DS as there aren't many exclusives for it. I might check it out in the future, I am new to Kirby and still have Triple Deluxe to try. I know I am a bit late ha
@dok5555555 The thing is though, Woolly World on New 3DS looked substantially better than on OG 3DS hardware, the textures were more pronounced, and Woolly World on New 3DS ran at 60fps, while it only ran at 30fps on original 3DS/3DS XL hardware.
@heathenmagic To be fair, I'm not sure how they would've added it. The game is 2D, after all. I just wish this were a Switch port so it could look as good or better than Woolly World.
@Jessicoo Well, it really doesn't even have a week of it being announced, so it isn't weird that you haven't heard about it until now. Also, when they say "only for new 3DS" they also include the New 2DS and any 3DS model with "New" on it. It's not weird at all since the New 2DS is still on production, along with the New 3DS XL.
@NerdyBoutKirby My mistake, I understand better now. I didn't get to play the original. I don't have a Switch, but this would look awesome on there I imagine.
@JoeyJoey95 What you're saying makes it sound like "affect" is used in the verb tense whereas "effect" is the noun, but isn't that the way I wrote it? I definitely appreciate being told of grammatical mistakes, as I am majoring in English and one who aspires to be a writer someday, so thank you. I'm still confused, though. Affect vs. effect is definitely one of the grammatical traps I often fall into; were it something more important than a Nintendo Life comment, I would have looked up the proper usage beforehand.
@JoeyJoey95 Ah, okay! I didn't realize I used it in two different comments! I was so confused, but now I understand. I had Spanish last semester, and yeah, por/para can be very hard to distinguish between. I found differentiating between "me," "mi," and "mí" to be more difficult, though!
I have an international friend from China, and she told me just today there are several Chinese characters she doesn't know how to write (Chinese even being her first language) because EVERY word is represented by its own unique symbols. That's a pretty stark contrast to our system of 26 letters. Chinese is made easier, though, by the fact that there is no present, past, or future tense (-ed, -ing) which are a nightmare to learn in Spanish! I guess every language has its quirks. Thanks for the vote of good luck!
The website got updated, now it only says "Nintendo 3DS" which probably means it'll be playable on all models.
