Fortnite Season 5 is finally launching today, bringing with it a whole host of changes including the addition of motion/gyro controls on Switch.
The build-up to Season 5 has been full of little teases and surprises, with cracks lining the sky and in-game landmarks appearing in our real world, but the day has finally arrived to see what's new. Viking ships, desert outposts, and ancient statues have appeared across the island and there are some very interesting gameplay additions, too.
Firstly, players will be able to powerslide into battle with the all-new All Terrain Kart. This kart has room for your entire squad, gives you speed boosts for drifting, makes you work together as a team to pull off jumps and even has a bounce pad on the roof. You can see it below.
The map has also been updated - as you may have expected - with a new desert biome and two new locations called Paradise Palms and Lazy Links being introduced, and players are encouraged to try jumping through 'Rifts' that are still present on the map. The centre of the seventh, eighth, and ninth storm circles have also changed, now being able to shift in random directions (instead of simply shrinking). As the storm closes in, it will move and shrink to the new location.
Perhaps the biggest news for Switch players, however, and the addition we know many of you lovely readers have been waiting for, is the addition of gyro controls exclusively for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. These controls will be fully adjustable in the game's settings, finally allowing you to realise your full Splatoon 2-loving potential.
There are lots of other small changes, too, which can all be seen in the full patch notes. The game is down for maintenance to implement these changes at the time of writing, with Season 5 expected to kick off in just a few hours' time.
Will you be jumping in and seeing all the changes for yourself? Let us know down below.

Gyro controls!?!? Epic does hear us, and they do love us.
Eat my *** now Xbox players!
Gyro for the win.
But does it have gy-- Oh wait, it has now.
No more Steam Big Picture mess for me!
Daymn, looking forward to this
This is a good sign. Hopefully the next generation of consoles will make gyro aiming a standard.
They dont hear us because where the hell is the stats tab and replay options!!
@Jacob1092 Man i love that GIF
I've been crying out for gyro controls but didn't really expect them to actually implement them any time soon so this is awesome news. I've put 100 hours into the game and still can't aim any better with sticks than when I started, it was ruining the game for me.
This sold me a battle pass I think... I really like it!
Yes!!! Gyro controls will actually allow me to play decently!
Yay Gyro controls! Maybe I'll finally be able to aim
I am not into this game (the whole construction part in the battle royale puts me off) but Kudos to EPIC they have been really committed to listen to the community and to add features and fix problems super fast.
While PUBG takes ages to do anything and is not even free.
My son has been begging me to get him a Battle Pass... THIS makes it worth it! Sold
I think I might just buy a battle pass later today.
Question, can you use Nintendo Gold Points to pay for a Battle Pass in Fortnite?
@MartyFlanMJFan nope.
@617Sqn thanks for the reply.
@617Sqn do you earn Gold Points with the purchase of the Battle Pass?
Hmmm. Played Fortnite just a bit. Sucked. Now with gyro... hmmm... maybe I'll give it another go. Although the building crazyness sometimes is a bit much anyway!
@617Sqn maybe I asked the wrong question, I just used Nintendo Gold Points to buy V-Bucks, so essentially you CAN use your Gold Points to pay for the Battle Pass... because I've just done it. Nice one!
Awesome, now my aiming will be better. With my building and aiming better on the Switch instead of PC, I can start playing Fortnite a little more. I still have a lot to learn about the game tho, so at least two of the main parts of the game I'll be comfortable with. I can finally increase my sensitivity.
@MartyFlanMJFan Actually, you can use gold points. I did. You’re purchasing V Bucks for $10 to buy the in-game battle pass. I used 5.85 in gold points and paid the rest with normal funds.
EDIT; I see now that you figured it out
Happy hunting!
To everyone put off by the building aspect, I hardly ever build anything. The few times I did, it was a single ramp to reach a challenge item. I consistently place in the 10-20 range when I’m not challenge hunting, so building is not necessarily a make or break skill.
Was waiting for the new season to buy a season pass. I don’t play it a ton, but i’ve probably played 15-20 hrs on my Switch. With gyro support, I don’t see why I won’t play even more.
@HobbitGamer yeah thank you though! I was just asking questions while waiting for the game to update, wanted to get the Battle Pass before he found out, he's very pleased!
Gyro controls are a blessing. I’m so thrilled.
@HobbitGamer I see how the building aspect makes this game a bit unique and I feel one has to master it in order to get those Victory Royale. Twice been the second last one standing coming up against people who has built giant towers in the middle of the barren land in the middle of the last circles. Given me very little chance. But its a quite fun game anyway
Ok i may have to try this.
Gyro controls are going to unbalance things in favour of Switch players
gyo ehh! ...... I guess I'll have to download it again and give it another shot.
I Just deleted the game.
Will give IT another try
@Djgoa They're working on it, you have to give them time
Gyro finally! This means that now I’ll suck because I’m just bad at it. Great!!! 🤣
It needed gyro controls sooo bad, I am really pleased! This will probably put it in second place to pc as my favourite now
Thank God for the gyro controls, i SUCK with stick aiming.
To someone above who said this will unbalance things in favour to the Switch; isn't a mouse and keyboard unbalanced in favour to the mighty PC? I think it is, i also think gyro controls should be standard in the future in shooter type games, it really is that much better.
I thought they wouldn't fit this game with motion control since they wanted to make it fair to the Xbox crowd with the stick aim. Now I'm even tempted to download the game.
Well Hi-Rez Studios (Paladins) time for you to follow suit on motion aiming.
