Sony pulled a dramatic about turn back in 2019 and allowed Fortnite to support cross play on every single platform, including Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Mac. Not only does this allow you to play with your chums on PS4 while you're on your Switch, but it will also let you use a single account across multiple platforms.
For example, you might want to play Fortnite on your PS4 Pro at home, taking full advantage of that gorgeous 4K, but then play on your Switch when you're out and about without losing any of your progress. That's exactly what you're able to do now.
However, it's a bit of a complicated process – especially if you didn't actually register for an Epic account when you started playing Fortnite on Switch. Not to worry though, for we've figured it all out and created this guide that will walk you through the process step-by-step.
Fortnite - How To Link Your Epic Account To Switch And PS4/PS5
This process is going to be super simple or a little bit complicated depending on one factor: whether or not you have an Epic Account. You see, when playing Fortnite on a platform for the first time, you don't have to set up an Epic Account. Instead, it will just tie your progress to your PSN ID or Nintendo Account. This isn't a problem until you want to carry your progress over to a different platform.
Complicating this matter further, is the fact that you couldn't previously connect an Epic Account to Nintendo Switch if you'd previously signed onto PS4 with it – or vice versa. This restriction was then lifted.
Now that the history lesson is out of the way, let's go through the steps you need to take to tie your Nintendo Switch progress to an Epic Account before you can link it to PS4. If you know you have an Epic Account with your Switch progress tied to it, skip these steps and head to the 'How To Connect Your Epic Account To PS4/PS5 And Switch' section below.
How To Sync Your Fortnite Switch Progress To An Epic Account
So you want to sync your Fortnite progress to an Epic Account so you can carry it over to PS4 (or PS5)? Here's how to do it in steps:
- Visit the official Fortnite site: https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/.
- Hit 'login' at the top right of the page.
- You will be asked 'Do you already play Fortnite?'. Respond 'Yes'.
- Choose the 'Nintendo Switch' icon.
- A new page will open requesting you to log in to your Nintendo Account. Do so, as this will allow Epic to access your Switch progress.
- Next, you'll have to create an Epic Account. Fill in the form.
- If successful, you should be prompted to validate the email address you provided. Head to your inbox, find the email, and follow the link to validate it.
- If you followed the steps properly, your Switch progress will now be saved to an Epic Account.
How To Connect Your Epic Account To PS4/PS5 And Switch
You have an Epic Account that is linked to your Fortnite progress on Switch? Great. Follow these steps to link it to your PS4/PS5.
- Visit the official Fortnite site: https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/.
- Hit 'login' at the top right of the page.
- Sign in with your email and password.
- Hover over your username at the top right of the screen, click on 'Account'.
- Click on 'Connected Accounts'.
- Scroll down and you should see the following image:

- Switch should have the word 'Disconnect' underneath it. This means that your Switch progress is synced up.
- PS4, on the other hand, should have the word 'Connect' underneath it. Click it.
- Next, you'll have to login with your PSN ID credentials.
- If successful, you should now have both accounts linked together. Sign into Fortnite on PS4 and Switch and your progress should cross over.
How do you feel about Sony's about turn? Are you annoyed that this happened in the first place or just grateful that you can progress no matter where you play it? Let us know in the comments section below.

About time. This is only good for new players though, my fiance made a new account for Switch and spent a decent amount of money on it months ago. Thanks, Sony.
@Dalarrun You can still link together your Switch and PS4 accounts, even if you're not a new player.
Thanks for the guide, will have to do this a couple times once I get home, appreciate the simple outline!
When playing on the PS4 with my switch/Epic account, will I get a career tab ?
Thinking about trying this out to see if we can play w/ Switch in portable and PS4 on the TV in the same room. Setting up 3 accounts for the 3 of us though may have just talked me out of it.
Do either of these platforms let you choose your friends on other consoles to play against or is it all just random matchmaking?
@FoxyGlen But what's the point if you've already put progress and money into a second account? Why go back to your old PlayStation one?
this doesn't work
"use a single account across multiple platforms"
Is the real win here.
Being able to play on the Go on my Switch and continue at home at full spec on my PC is great.
This makes the Switch act like Cross-Save between VITA and PS4.
I'm glad that now I'll be able to play Fortnite with my nephew who lives is another state, but I'm also pretty sad that I'm about to get my ass handed to me by an 11-year-old.
@Desrever I feel that is every online game at this point.
By the time I get to play my nephew and little cousins have the maps memorized... I never see them coming.
I just assume everyone taking me out in BF2 or WWI is 12 or 13 also 🙄
Hey, look at that. I can download Fortnite on my PS4 now. I'd bet money on this issue costing Sony money so they did an about face.
See, you put enough pressure on a major publisher and good things happen.
@Knightkrawler14 What bit isn't working for you?
I had to set up a new epic account when I started playing on Switch. Now I can't unlink my old account from PSN to allow my newer account to connect. It says "Due to technical limitations with our backend, we are temporarily suspending PlayStation Network account unlinking. We hope to restore the functionality in November.".
@617Sqn No
so it is possible to have an account for xbox, ps4 and switch now?
Okay, this is epic
One minute of silence for whoever had to create a new account for Switch and Xbox, after playing on PS4, from the ground up.
What is the Career Tab people always ask for in the Switch version? Just curious.
@xpromisedx It is possible to have ONE account for all platforms now.
Epic is even making a system to merge accounts if you created a new one to play elsewhere if yours was locked on Playstation.
Unfortunately, this doesn't work if you had a different account tied to your PSN. The option to sign out from PSN is gone too, they say we won't be able to do this until November. Ugh. Sony is the worst.
@FTPinkRabbit yeah, and if you try to back out from your xbox/switch account, it tells you that you probably lose all your progress... i am frightened to unlink it now
@Grawbad but not the other way around unfortunately. i have a psn and a xbox/switch account. if i unlink my xbox"switch account it tells me that i will lose all my progress... other way around i cant unlink my psn account...
Sony HAVE to allow Cross Play for their machine after got some Complaints from a lot customers, because if Sony keep INSIST with their Arrogance, Fire & Pitchforks will come to Sony HQ.
@Anti-Matter glad your enjoying Fortnite with friends 😉
@1UP_MARIO
Hey, i don't play Fortnite.
I play The Sims 4 & Portal Knights on my PS4 now. (I rarely touch my Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD)
@Anti-Matter oh ok sorry I thought this was a Fortnite thread
I hope gamers don't forget how stubborn they were, and how full of themselves also. This is great news for all gamers for sure. But it doesn't change Sony's view on cross play. This should never have been an issue from the start. But again great news for all.
@xpromisedx No need to unlink as far as I know. Can just link to them all now.
I haven't played Fortnite on me Switch cause I first played it on PS$ and I couldn't link em but that all changes today! WOOOOOOO
@theodguy
Source?
I'm glad this is happening, cross play is the way of the future for online games and I'm glad Sony isn't stuck in the stone age when it comes to this anymore. That being said, I really hope Sony and their fans simmer down on the arrogance now. "The PS4 doesn't need cross play" "PlayStation is the best place to play" yadayadayada. Turns out that when you have an anti-consumer policy, gamers are going to bust your balls, no matter how big you think they are. I never cared about Fortnite, but it's the biggest game out there and I'm glad Sony acknowledges this.
Now my PlayStation buds can join everyone else on Discord in Rocket League, and that makes me very happy.
@SoObsolete
It really shouldn't have been an issue. A lot of people who made second Epic Games accounts are out of money, and for what? Just so Sony can change their mind after the fact?
Exactly, yet everyone will forgive them for it. I'm glad I was not one of the unlucky that had to do that if they wanted to play on Switch. Let's hope they open the doors for the other crossplay games as well, and keep it going moving forwards.
Whelp, too late, Sony. I only used my PS4 account during the alpha and certainly don't need it on Switch.
@Dalarrun They're working on allowing you to merge accounts so you can access all of your purchases.
Well good, glad for the Fortnite players. Even if I still think the game is overblown and underwhelming. I know how much people wanted this and even I thought Sony was being a turd by not joining in.
@Agramonte "This makes the Switch act like Cross-Save between VITA and PS4."
Except without the 1990s special cross save dialogs....
Did you guys see the PR BS on the PlayStation blog? They had the gall to act like this whole cross save controversy was due to technical issues they had to resolve instead of them going on record and saying that they didn't want to do cross play because of money. That the PlayStation was the "best place to play".
Sure I'm not going to bring up cross play anymore to make fun of Sony, but I sure as heck ain't going to congratulate them on it. This should have been a non-issue and their arrogance in not owning up to their own choices isn't something I'll soon forget.
@Dalarrun
Wow that's pretty lame. Can't say I'm surprised considering its Sony.
@Grawbad well i have 2 accounts. One is linked to ps. One is linked to everything else. You cant unlink the ps account because of sony restrictions, and you cant have xbox/switch linked twice to two different accounts. Therefore you had to unlink xbox/switch account but then there comes a warning that all purchases/progress will be lost. That is really harsh
@xpromisedx don't do it yet. Epic is making us able to merge the accounts soon. Don't think you can yet.
seems sonys stubbornness finally gave in to crossplay.
@Grawbad good to know, thanks! i will definitely wait then!
I am just starting to try this out now since this is a thing. Need to be able to merge accounts. My son started a new account on switch, but all his progress was on PS4. We couldn’t figure out how to disconnect it. It didn’t show in epic games. We connected his PS4 account no problem and we could crossplay but when we tried to connect Nintendo it said he already had an account connected, but it didn’t give the disconnect option. Created a new Nintendo user on switch and linked it to that one. Hopefully they allow merging of accounts soon.
@Dalarrun I read that merging of accounts is coming in November. There’s still hope for you yet
Now if only they would support voice chat through the online app instead of just headphone jack and usb headsets.
@blaisedinsd
I don't play Fortnite anymore, it's a little too late imo
My son has had tons of problems trying to link switch account with epic. SO MUCH SO I HAVE GIVEN UP! The exception to rule with epic is if your switch profile has an existing epic account it is unlinkable. I have requested countless times to delete existing epic account and have not gotten it deleted to be able to link newer and much more advanced fortnight level.
