The Mega Man franchise is iconic for many reasons, one of which is the chiptune soundtrack that accompanies each game. Though there have been highs and lows with the different soundtracks, they’ve all captured that mechanical, synthesized sound, and it’s expected that the upcoming Mega Man 11 will be no different.
Game Informer recently talked with the game’s Audio Director, Ryo Yoshii, and he talked about how he wants to modernize the sound, explaining that Mega Man 11 will be the first game in the series to incorporate real world sounds into its audio. For example, manhole covers, construction hats, and ski boots have all been utilized to make some unique sounds for enemies and stage hazards. Here’s what he had to say:
Because the visuals have been updated, it’s a more 3D look and a little more realistic, we figured that incorporating previous sounds wouldn’t jive well with the visuals. We didn’t want there to be a disconnect, so we felt that in order to match the visuals we needed to make sure that the audio was a little more modernized. We didn’t want to just use synthesized sounds. We wanted to mix it with Foley work to create a more authentic sound.

Trying to contain my hype.
We wait this game for so long! It will be awesome. A 9/10 for sure. Lets go Capcom put all your love in it.
Can't wait to hear how that Mega Buster will sound.
It sounds like they are going back to a Mega Man 7 and 8 style of game, back when the series was trying to progress.
Oh common!! Capcom 😁 my body isnt ready! Lol, so hyped about this game.
@JayJ It's about time, too. The "retro nostalgia" direction of the last two was pretty cheesy, overall, besides being creatively limiting.
@Gauchorino Yeah I was never a fan of Mega Man 9 and 10. They felt more like cheap download retro remake Mega Man games than something I would consider true sequels. I think this is what fans have been waiting for.
It's amazing how quickly a company can improve its image by appealing to its fans. All the best, Capcom. Don't let us down. An MML collection with a completed MML3 included would also be good.
I hated the mega buster charging sound on the earlier games. It was loud, annoying, and because it had to use up one of the audio channels the entire time it played, it crippled the music.
This sounds exciting! Damn, I really love the library the Switch is accumulating. Can't wait to get one lmao
Its of course great that the franchise is returning, even if I am not wowed by the footage yet. However, doing another sidescroller is a save bet, that also banks on nostalgia. Hopefully Capcom takes a huge risk someday and catapult the franchise in the freeroaming 3D era, with cool new ideas. Something that brings the franchise forward. Oh, and at retail!
As much as I've wanted to see the series adopt a new art style instead of yet another pixel art entry, I must say I'm wary about the music. The absolute best tracks in the series have hands down been chiptunes; I've found every non-8 bit Mega Man sountrack to be okay at best.
I do hope they make it work this time. It would be a dream for it to reach the heights of Mega Man 5, which is my favorite soundtrack of the series.
@JayJ I think 9, at least, was a really enjoyable game in general (after getting used to its forced and hokey "retro difficulty and graphics"), but yeah, the demagoguery of a few "Mega Man 2 only!" drones silencing the rest of the series' fanbase has really pushed back the series' growth and fun factor.
@Gauchorino That's because Mega Man is one of those long running series that is heavily effected by it's aging fanbase. It has been around for so long that the only really vocal fans about it anymore are just the nostalgic forum posting types. They have been trying to please them but now it seems like they are trying to be more appealing.
@JayJ I hope this one isn't just going to be "Megaman 2 in 2.5D", which is what I'm expecting (or else you risk making the '80s kids mad). I hope they add a lot of fun, new features and mechanics to it, like they did with Megaman 6-8. Regardless of any the flaws those three games had, they each added something unique and fun to a series that was starting to get really stale prior to 6. 9's legacy is really the point where Capcom's (or Inafune's) incredible laziness got really apparent.
