Oh Miiverse, we hardly knew ye. It seems like only yesterday that Nintendo announced its bold vision to create a social network for gamers, but sadly the plan didn't quite work out.
We've already highlighted our favourite Miiverse moments but the video tribute shown above - created with heartfelt care by Christian Hendrickson - is perhaps the perfect way to see off this misunderstood piece of Nintendo history.
Please remove your hats and be upstanding for Miiverse, a really swell social network that was taken from us far too soon. Sniff.

so emotional! goodbye miiverse, you were the best worse social media I've seen in my life
This was actually pretty well put together. Humourous, yet respectful for those who really enjoyed Miiverse.
:'-D
Without Miiverse, does that mean that we can no longer upload Super Mario Maker levels?
Holding F.
Probably should check Miiverse before it dies.
Dang, I havent used Miiverse in forever, but this video still hit me with the feels.
Swapnote was MILES better than Miiverse in its original form. If a bit limited (you could only add 100 friends). It was so nice to share drawings and pics and daily experiences directly with people. And getting that blue light to appear on your 3DS.
It was fun for a little while, but I really did lose interest rather quickly, and several of the updates only made the place more cumbersome and less fun.
@GC-161 And now there's Swapdoodle. This just reminds of how bland the Switch is OS wise.
But why can't Metroid crawl?
The fact that posting in certain communities requires a New 2DS/3DS(XL) even if the game is available for all systems because of the way they designed the redesign. * cough * Smash Bros. * cough * Pokémon S&M.
My last respects... ok.
DING DONG THIS S*** IS DEAD!
Seriously, nothing of value is being lost.
I'm wondering if Nintendo might make a miiverse successor for the Switch.
@Paddle1 but neither incarnation was as good as Swapnote as it originally was. Before some Japanese pervert forced Nintendo to remove features from it left and right.
In Swapnote you could actually spend those damn coins you got from walking on new stationary. Now you have to BUY them with real money. But not even coming close to what Swapnote was.
I used to have friends there from all over the world. 3DS users who would take 3d pics to showcase their homeland every day. One guy lived in the woods and would take beautiful pics of the scenery and of his two husky dogs. Another user lived in India and she would post pics of very unique events they had over there.
What made it sweet is that they were 3DS users like you. Learning together to use this (back then) new device. Discussing its features and of course, the games.
Miiverse was so heavily moderated. Swapnote was not. You didn't like someone? You just deleted him/her from your list and moves on.
But Miiverse had its moments, tho. Especially with Splatoon.
@PurinPuff I think you can still upload levels, but you can't comment on them
I’ll get in a few more post before it dies.
@PurinPuff There is maintenance for Mario Maker planned for some time near the shutdown, probably addressing this.
The typical post when the end of Miiverse gets mentioned.
F
It had potential bit my biggest issue was how slow it was to use and load, especially on both the Wii U & 3DS. This is why I rarely used it.
I would like a social media locale just for gamers and gaming related stuff though; just one that runs a bit better.
Press Yeah! To pay respects
I loved miiverse. One of the best places to get Nintendo specific news and interact with people who weren't trolls(meaning conversations could be taken more seriously).
Gonna be spending all my Sunday saving my Likes and such.
Nintendo better make a Miiverse for Switch or Imma riot
It was novel at first, but then became this weird and creepy hangout for neglected children.
Very touching. You’ll be missed Miiverse!
Stupid move by Nintendo. Great concept but not profitable I guess. If only Switch has such feature
(Stumbles into funeral hall drunk as a skunk)
hic Forget you Miiverse! hic You suck!
(Passes out)
rip in pieces miiverse, was pretty dope even though i only used it occasionally
Miiverse is great but if Switch can't have it then they can't let Wii U owners have it anymore. People are such hypocrites, they slated motion controls on Wii and Wii U, and wanted it scrapped. But when Switch was revealed to still use motion control, all is fine. Now some people say Miiverse is crap but if Switch had it, I bet they wouldn't be saying that.
That was a very nice tribute.
Who cares about Mii verse? How about a moment of silence for picto chat?
I really miss Miiverse, especially since the Switch has no replacement for it.
It was such a great concept for a more friendly and useful social network, it's sad to see that Nintendo's current leadership is unable to see its huge potential (not just on a Nintendo device, but for everyone). Well I guess not everyone can be a visionary like Iwata was.
Although I shouldn't be surprised. For a banker like Kimishima everything that doesn't make money is worthless...
@Wayoh2002 Everyone who used and appreciated it.
The Switch is desperatedly lacking a non-public social network to connect with other players.
It really says a lot that Splatoon 2 implemented a fake version of Miiverse - it's just a dummy, even the like-function isn't real.
Goodnight, Miiverse.
WaraWara plaza shall now be eternally empty...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Correction: *some idiots slammed motion control...
I still think that it is a mistake to discontinue Miiverse on Switch...
@PurinPuff Of course, Mario Maker is still functional, just without commenting function. However, I find it unacceptable that Nintendo don't include a new commentating function in Super Mario Maker. The game is just two years old and comments are essential for creating levels...
@GC-161 I remember there were groups of ppl sending their region exlusive stationeries. You could collect them... like stamps. It was a very enjoyful experience.
And then it ended. Because Nintendo thought it's better to punish its whole userbase, rather than permaban those pervs. And after many, many years, we got a "replacement" loaded with microtransactions and DLC...
And all this digital content you choose to buy... will have no use when they close the network anyway.
Misunderstood piece of pure art. Ahead of its time, like centuries ahead. It sparked a creative genius in so many individuals around the globe. Kids. It was for the kid in all of us.
It was fun incarnated, it was social media without any of the ugly stuff - it was the direct line that exists nowhere else between the gamer and the developer and the publisher. And between the gamers themselves.
It was so beautiful, innocent and perfect, that maybe it's good that it's going away. Humanity doesn't deserve such a magnificent gift. It cannot understand it, it obviously cannot commercialize it, and it cannot truly enjoy it because of its limited brain capacity.
Never could I have imagined that there will a world beyond the game but game related which would be just as fun. This is what Miiverse was able to do - with works of art and funny images from different stages of the game appearing like flowers in a spring.
Springtime for gaming - that was Miiverse. And we are all today damaged, not whole.
@PtM The redesign made it so that Miiverse required you to have a game open before posting to its community. Anyone could post in the Pokemon X&Y and ORAS communities then the redesign happens and the majority of 3DS owners can't for S&M? Even when the game isn't open you still can't post. I don't know why you're trying to defend a design decision which locks out most of the user base, Nintendo could have made the community open like the Smash Bros. one but they don't.
BTW I do have a "New" series system, I'm talking about people that don't.
I only had two people to enjoy Miiverse with, maybe three. While we had a fun and quaint time, our interest in using Miiverse ran out well before the Wii U’s death knell.
And yet, this video/performance was nice and reminded me of the pleasant early days.
Never understood the awesome fanart people were able to do on those touch screens. Hope they replace it with something new quickly, maybe something that doesn't ban people for cursing and instead just filters stuff out for kids.
Miiverse was a like a vomit ridden play ball pin from ChuckeCheese. It reminded me of the early days of Nintendo's fan forums, and that's NOT a compliment.
I was pretty active on Miiverse for a long time, but stopped using it because I grew tired of the strict mods and the attention-seeking kids. The idea of Miiverse was great, though, and some of the drawings were absolutely fantastic.
It was a nice feature, but tech is fleeting. Nintendo doesn't want to manage a social media platform, and I respect that decision.
The Wii U is a dormant platform in my house since the Switch launch, and Nintendo is on the right path of recovery.
..shoot..now where will I find Smile Basic key codes for homemade games?
...it's o.k. ...I'm sure they're coming back with an awesome new version called MY Miiverse!..
So long 30 platinum coins per week- that's all you meant to me Miiverse. Not that there has been anything worthwhile to spend them on mind you...
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Considering the Wii U is a footnote now, I don't think most people really cares about it anymore. It's time to Switch
Good riddance.
Reminds me of this one guy that kept asking for some random flower character to appear in smash, in EVERY dev update that Sakurai did to the smash miiverse before it was released, glad I will never get to see that cringefest again. Aside from that, Miiverse was fun for a while, stopped using it after I stopped playing the WiiU so much. It was nice to see how everyone else experienced a certain game, not gonna lie.
@PtM
Exactly. Lifeless.
It will be system-related posts from Nintendo in 2012. Not a bustling community of people chatting about games. Huge difference.
yet they stilled opened up a new community for the new kirby game, five days before it closes: https://miiverse.nintendo.net/titles/6437256809390189263/6437256809390189269
Lmao
I didn't use Miiverse much, but I will miss it. I do regret not posting one final time on that final community that they created specifically for the shutdown of the service. I had the perfect thing to say:
"So long, and thanks for all the fish."
It is a sad day
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
The administrators routinely protected popular users who committed infractions, all the while putting the boot heel on the necks of lesser users who broke the same rules. They'd also target users; I remember instances where they'd erase multiple posts made months apart at the same time. I know this to be true because I was a victim of their bias, and I highly doubt that I was alone.
The above demonstrably proves that the mods weren't impartial, and indeed would make things personal if you called them out on their nonsense (as I often did through email). Utterly reprehensible, completely inept, totally power mad sacks of steaming dog crap who are incapable of taking valid criticism is precisely what they are. Why people continue to extol Miiverse, and did not abandon the loathsome platform in their droves a long time ago genuinely baffles me.
I remember one stupid question in Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water Miiverse community:
"If the bikini costumes are removed then why the game is still rated M?"
Yeah sure, forget all the gore, depressing tone and story, and its heavy focus on suicide. Apparently optional costumes that shows some skin are the most dangerous thing that children should never see and thus the only factor to warrant its mature rating. Nice logic there.
I wanted to be snark and reply like that, but I was sure that post would get deleted; and "suicide" apparently is forbidden word in Miiverse anyrway even in M-rated game community.
When Satoru Iwata showed up in this tribute....THE FEELS WERE TOO REAL!!!!!T__T
@raisenv I really don't blame you. It's almost as stupid as people complaining about Tokyo Mirage Sessions' localization.
Oh hey, Kevin(Alucario) was in the video. He deserved it.
R.I.P. Miiverse I would have still used it on the Switch. I don't care about sharing with people on Twitter or Facebook. Felt much better to share moments with friends and other fans of the game in a closed community.
Miiverse is truly in it's final moments with posts revving up NSFW content, hackers and MOAR hackers, and now the service is sometimes lagging, but even still, it'll be missed for revving up dank memes such as How 2 crawl and Bigly.
Very nice.
I really enjoyed Miiverse, but 90 seconds of this was enough before I pulled the plug.
Never understood this at all, what a waste.......Remember that mess of money, effort, and development called Sony’s Home? .....ugh, same thing. At least Nintendo didn’t seem to invest the gobs of money into it Sony did, finally counting your losses and moving on is a great thing.
The should have just brought it to the Switch and made it run faster. If they could have cut the loading times for Miiverse in half it would have actually been usable.
I loved Miiverse. Perfect for non conformist folks like myself, who actually despise mainstream social media.
Why would they get rid of Miiverse? They could have just brought it over to the Switch. It’s going to hurt them now, because so many great WiiU games were played best with MiiVerse.
@PurinPuff You'll still be able to, but you just can't comment on them.
@GuyMysterio
And you're still addressing the wrong person. You don't know me. But oh, I know about you - well, at least I do now. From what I've been told, you were some vile little cancerous sociopath who gained notoriety in Miiverse because you used to comment on posts of emotionally fragile children who were contemplating suicide, and urge them on to carry out whatever plan they might have had to end their existence to fruition. Utterly despicable. Did it ever occur to you that some of those kids may have been vulnerable, and had legitimate mental health issues? For all we know, you may be ultimately responsible for one of them taking their own life.
Now, you could claim that what I've stated above is spurious, and that I have the burden of proof, etc., but I can just turn that back around on you and ask for evidence of any wrongdoings by the arraigned - which you don't have, I'll wager...
Just remember who initially pointed the accusatory finger. Either bring me something substantive, or jog on, attention-seeker.
i never got to go on it but okay
