Fans of the massively influential Dungeon Master will be pleased to know that Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is headed towards the Switch eShop.
The first-person dungeon-crawler takes inspiration from FTL's '80s classic, giving you the chance to take a team of warriors into hostile territory, where you'll face hordes of monsters and other foul entities.
Like Dungeon Master, movement is grid-based but takes place in real time, and you can equip your characters with weapons and other items.
The game is already available on other formats, and reviews praise the old-school feel but lament the lack of story and the overall shortness of the experience.
Here's some official blurb, because we know you love that kind of thing:
After countless days and nights celebrating within the infamous Monkey Tavern, our team of adventurers have spent every last penny... Their fates, however are about to change...
Like a gift from the gods, in walks a mysterious stranger who points them towards a high tower full of invaluable treasures .
It doesn't take much more to rouse their thirst for adventure.
You will enjoy exploring a dungeon full of riddles, dangerous enemies and vicious traps.
And if luck favours...you will discover secret passages sheltering legendary weapons and armours.
Key Features :
- Dungeon exploration in grid-base movement
- 8 classes
- 3 difficulty levels
- 2 hours of intense music
- Static real time fights
- 22 different enemies, including 6 bosses
- Numerous traps and secrets
- More than 100 unique items
The game hits the Switch eShop on November 7th. Will you be downloading this one?

Looks like the kind of game you can find on smartphones.
Ummm....not sure
Orcs & Elves is still one of my favorite games on the NDS ... so this might be right up my alley!
@Rhaoulos So what? The Quest is available on smart devices as well, and that is a truly excellent RPG in the same vein as this.
Looks old and tired. Pass.
It's really my kind of game ! Happy that the release is so close !
Just makes me want The Legend of Grimrock on Switch!
Now, I'm waiting for Legend of Grimrock and a remake of Lands of Lore !!
Will wait for reviews. Looks a little too simplistic.
I think I will pass on this one. Another game that might have been interesting if I were more looking for games. But there are so many games lined up that I want already in the next couple months that I wont be adding to the list unless it looks REALLY good.
Now THIS is something different for the Switch! We Can’t say we have 10 of these already...hopefully it’s a good one!
Played it on PS4. Clumsy, dated and just not very good.
Reminds me of Legend of Grimrock. Hoping this turns out well.
Looks generic and dated. Like a PC game from 20 years ago.
This is right up my alley. I'll download it on day 1.
Could be an OK little time sink.
I like monkeys. I like taverns. This? Will wait for reviews.
@Steel76
Me too. I'll give it a try. They hooked me with Dungeon Master!
@rdrunner1178
Me three! I also loved Abandoned Places.
@Ralek85 Now i want The Quest on Switch, it's one of the few phone games ive bought, and thats twice, once on the Iphone years ago, and also for my current android. Such a good game.
Looks like it could be a descent pick up at the right price. Scratches that old nostalgic itch.
@Arngrim Assuming the pricing would remain roughly the same, I would have no quarrel triple-dipping (I got it on Steam and Android so far). It really is a fantastic game, with plenty of content and a lot of heart
Add engine programmer for grimoire, I'm looking at what it will take to port that to the Switch. Check it out on steam.
Reminds me of d&d on my SEGA megadrive
@Ralek85 Totally agree, that is one of my favorite DS games too. Would love to see more of this type of dungeon crawler.
@Ralek85
Oh dang, The Quest, I remember that game. I didn't get through much of it when I was younger, I was mainly just grinding card games in the first town for gear after beating the first crypt. After getting my warrior set up I set off to the next town but got kind of distracted and then just kind of stopped playing for some reason. Truly a legend to behold. Supaguy, the random tavern card player that saved the town that one time and then most likely died by archers.
Speaking of these types of games, does anyone remember The Keep for 3DS. I was waiting for it to come out here in NZ but it just never showed up.
I sunk hours into Dungeon Master on my Amiga 500 back in the day. I will surely pick this up! Looks like fun!
@Supaguy Really? I got it on my 3DS, not sure what region NZ falls under, but im in Scandinavia, so EU eshop i guess for me at least.
@Arngrim Yeah I think it's slightly different for us in AU region (Australia + NZ). Idk, it never comes up when I search for it and it never appeared on the front page at all back then.
