It's time, once again, for the North American Nintendo Download update, and this week goes heavy on Virtual Console offerings in particular. The Wii U has two Culture Brain titles, including one that hasn't previously had a VC release, while the New 3DS gets a classic SNES game. The home console also has two new download-only titles to consider, along with discounts across both systems - let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download update earlier in the week? Don't fret, the details are still right here.
Wii U eShop
STEEL LORDS (nuGame, $14.99) - A title that promises a blend of strategic board-game play with fighting, in principle it sounds promising. We hope this will be an improvement over the disappointing STEEL RIVALS, and will let you know what we think in a review.
TAP TAP ARCADE 2 (RCMADIAX, $2.99) - This second mini collection includes SKEASY and also a new arrival called VOLCANO. We gave the former a modest recommendation in our review, and we'll see whether its companion in this bundle is red hot or rather dormant in fun.
Wii U Virtual Console
Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll (Culture Brain, $4.99) - A NES title that blends sidescrolling stages and one-on-one fights, with some origins in the 1985 arcade Shanghai Kid. We didn't think the pieces came together particularly well in our Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll review.
Baseball Simulator 1.000 (Culture Brain, $4.99) - Here's an interesting little twist, a Wii U Virtual Console game from the NES era that didn't have an equivalent release on the Wii service. As the name suggests this is an early effort in the sports sim / management genre as you try to lead your team to a divisional pennant. It throws in some wacky features as well, and we'll see whether it's a home run or a strike in our review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Color Zen (Cypronia, on discount until 29th July)
Hold Your Fire: A Game About Responsibility (Alkterios Games, on discount until 28th July)
Explody Bomb (Alkterios Games, on discount until 28th July)
Totem Topple (Crystalline Green, $1 until 14th July, normally $5)
New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (Konami, $7.99) — When you mention Goemon to fans of retro games, especially Konami enthusiasts, you're likely to prompt a wave of nostalgia. This Super NES title is certainly well loved, an action game full of creativity that can also be enjoyed in co-op; we gave this a strong recommendation in our Wii U Virtual Console The Legend of the Mystical Ninja review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Dan McFox: Head Hunter (Lightwood Games, $1.99 until 21st July, normally $2.99)
Glory of Generals: The Pacific (CIRCLE Entertainment, on discount until 28th July)
Mercenaries Saga 2 (CIRCLE Entertainment, on discount until 28th July)
Color Zen (Cypronia, on discount until 29th July)
My Style Studio: Hair Salon (Cypronia, on discount until 29th July)
Gardenscapes (Joindots, on discount until 14th July)
Murder on the Titanic (Joindots, on discount until 14th July)
3DS HOME Themes
The Legend of Dark Witch 2 Rudy Theme
The Legend of Dark Witch 2 Sola Theme
The Legend of Dark Witch 2 Zizou Theme
That's everything for the North American Nintendo Download Update this week - let us know what you're planning to download in the poll and comments below.

whelp.... nothing.
Looks like a bad week for NA too.
Still waiting on what the other Pokémon VC games that we're suppose to get later this summer Nintendo.
Nothing
Wow super weak!
That's a big Nope.
I'm going to be very disappointed if the New 3ds ends up having a larger collection of SNES games than the Wii U. How come we haven't had Final Fantasy III or Chrono Trigger yet?
Also, how come the 64 VC on Wii U looks so dark compared to the Wii VC? *sigh
I never played a Culture Brain NES game. I need to learn more about these games.
@Utena-mobile because lots of people like me own most vc games I possible could get on wii. A lot of them o got for free even thanks club Nintendo. Then I pay $1 for the wii u version.
I still use my wii vc on my wii u. That's why it's there.
Outside that, this is a slow week.
I might get Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Never played it before, and I want to support these handheld SNES releases.
Getting The Legend of the Mystic Ninja this week or next! Honestly, this isn't a half-bad week.
nothing for me.
atleast we have SOMETHING NEW for NES, we have not had something that wasn't release on Wii VC, since years now. (if im incorrect, then i didnt know)
other then, that im getting 2DS with Mario Kart 7 (hopefully to have my NNID back from my missing 3ds that i have not found in weeks. )
Good week, but I'm broke.
@Moon Yeah, not a great week on either side of the pond.
Ouch, this is a bad week...
@majinx07 The Pokemon Ranger games still haven't come out in NA; those are probably what they are talking about.
steel lords looks hilariously bad
Another week, another boring selection for the Wii U. Go fig.
unemntioned and maybe it's been out longer than i thought, but the monster hunter generations demo is out on the n.a. eshop.
Incredibly pathetic week on the eShop.
@ThomasBW84 a penny for every time this was the case...
Nothing for me since I'm getting 7th Dragon III Code and Monster Hunter Gen next week.
Yes! Mystical ninja!
@ThomasBW84 i repeat: The Monster Hunter Generations Demo Is Out Now On The North American Eshop.
The Home Themes for me, yet still not the full set
NOA sucks.... nothing. At least Europe gets love every week.
Nothing for me this week.
Baseball S 1000 was such a great wacky game. I loved the powerups. The moon baseball field was so awesome visually. The major problem was the ten run rule. If a team was up by ten runs at end of an inning, game was over and that team won. I wish I had an Wii U. Although maybe nostalgia is talking and if I played game now I wwould dislike it.
Meh.. Nothing again.
To anyone who is unfamiliar with Legend of the Mystical Ninja, I strongly encourage you to check it out. It's a great game.
I'll just wait on the Battle Cats POP! review and save my money for that!
@Jamotello I believe that came out on 30th June?
How come Nintendo releases more NES VC games but not on the 3ds? Last NES game they released was Star Tropics and yet it was WiiU only too! What is the deal here? They keep screwing over old 3ds users like myself from the VC titles be it NES or SNES!
Baseball Simulator sounds tempting if it is any good. Considering there are all of 0 WiiU baseball games at retail and eshop thus far which is sad on so many levels.
Anyone played it before? The description sounds good.
Nothing for me, but that's okay. I'm still TMS-ing and Pokemon Go-ing.
While, PSN and XL have stronger weeks with games like Furi anyways, they still make the effort to bridge the summer gap with some decent sales weeks. Nintendo on the other hand, cannot be bothered it seems =(
weak week
Wish the baseball game was either Baseball Stars by SNK or the SNES Ken Griffey baseball.....but those are probably both licensing issues. I'd buy either at $9.99 tomorrow if they came out. Yep I'd pay a premium to play them on my Wii U.
When you mention Goemon to fans of retro games, especially Konami enthusiasts
...Those still exist?
Mario RPG, Double Dragon 3, and both Startropics on 3DS instead of just Wii U would be easy purchases for me. I'm always looking for another classic with download play, as I've accrued many local friends who appreciate such cussness.
Still waiting for Resident Evil DS or RE: Gaiden
@ThomasBW84 thanks for that. didn't see it a while ago when i looked.
Nothing for me this week.
I know it's a long shot dream but I really wish they release Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (N64) on the VC. That was my favorite out of the 3 I played and the only one I don't own. Only rented at blockbuster when they had 3 day rentals. Never even beat it.
'This Super NES title is certainly well loved, an action game full of creativity that can also be enjoyed in co-op' Hmmm.
I'm not sure that's true of the 3DS release. That would be new and exciting. Can anyone confirm that? If true, it would definitely be a reason to pick it up. Co-op is a lot of fun and to be able to take it with me would be awesome. But I don't know that co-op would be supported on the 3DS. I'd talk friends into downloading it as well, if needed. If it is, that's my purchase this week. Otherwise, I already own the cartridge.
To the good sir that I know is on here:
I shall definitely be downloading totem topple, and I appreciate the sale and price point, as hopefully it shall still get me 10 gold coins on my Nintendo.
Nothing for me. Good too, 'cause I'm going to be hunting monsters with kittehs next week.
Will games for New 3DS eshop not show up on a normal 3DS?
I read two Culture Brain titles and said to myself "Could this be it did we finally get Super Ninja Boy?" Unfortunally we didn't but I have to admit I did get a bit psyched.
@garthvader noe hasn't received a vc title in about three weeks
@FantasiaWHT yup
Dangit. Really hoping we would have gotten Ziggurat on Wii U. Hopefully soon.
...At least Monster Hunter Generations is out next week...
I declare this week: Meh. I'm saving my Rupees for another week.
No mention of the point of Baseball Simulator 1000 (or was it 1.000?) was that you had power-ups (wasn't it like, super speed and multi-balls?)
@allav866 The word "Retro" is heavily implied with the statement.
@Moon Some would say looks like a bad year for Nintendo. Well at least we have the Callie and Marie amiibo tomorrow.
@faint At this point, I would rather have deals and good Nintendo selects than VC games. NOA Nintendo Selects are freaking horrid and there is no excuse not to have the same selection in all countries. None at all.
Nintendo needs to buy Bonk, Bomberman, Goemon, Bloody Roar, and Castlevania off Konami.
And by needs to, I mean there's no requirement, I'd just like it a lot.
Wait, let me handle this. This week's update is just... The worst.
Obviously a super light week...but getting a little Goemon isn't bad. I'll be picking that up.
Still kinda hoping that Spirit Tracks comes out this summer. Have to imagine it will...
....and next week's news: Nintendo whines about being in the red for lack of sales ..lol. Newsflash, Nintendo: offer us good stuff to buy and you will have great revenue in return!
@gatorboi352 you might have two whole dollars! Or Pounds or Euros, etc., as may be the case...
So it seems like there's no movement at all to buy all the Culture Brain NES games with the hope of encouraging them to release The Magic of Scheherazade, one of the secret best NES games. Shame!
@Darkthany lol... i think'd I'd have more than that even.
Yikes....nothing at all.
Wii U VC is dead
@Utena-mobile Hell, they could get Chrono Trigger DS and Final Fantasy VI Advance on the Wii U's, if they want to dance around the Wii -> U discount function. I'd hope for the Euro-version of the latter, though (e s p e c i a l l y for FFIVA, good gods).
Quick question for those in Europe that downloaded the Prof Layton movie, whats the block size?
😞 I thought Nintendo was planning on the 3ds to carry them through the year. Not going to happen when nothing new releases. Although there are some big games coming next couple of weeks isn't there?
@TJF588 I know. It's enough to make you cry. (T_T )
This is why Nintendo's getting their butts kicked in! Week after week Sony and Microsoft just blow their doors off with huge sales and weekly specials and large amounts of new indie and retail games to choose from!! Also, a fair share of classic games have been showing up on these systems too! Nintendo just can't compete! NOA especially is just horrible! At least NOJ tries!!! All better be fixed with the NX!!
Holy smokes, Baseball Simulator 1.000! One of the very few NES games that my dad, no joke, would play for HOURS on end! To this day, I've never been sure why he was so fond of that particular game when so many more realistic games were available at the time, but it's one of those quirky childhood memories that I can't help but wonder if I romanticized merely because it was my father playing video games, or if he really was just that enamored with it. This one may just be worth a download, if not just for the sheer nostalgia of it.
@Ralizah It's worth a play through I think I really liked playing when I'd rent it for SNES back when I was a kid.
