Another week is underway, and as always we get up and running with the European Nintendo Download Update. This line-up is a bit of a corker, with a highly promising demo / prelude being joined on 3DS by two major retail releases, while on Wii U we have a long awaiting download-only game, retro Pokémon titles and much more. This is certainly one of the most crowded weeks of the year so far; without further ado let's get to the details.
Wii U eShop
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! (Oddworld Inhabitants, 15.99/ £11.99 until 25th February, normally €19.99 / £14.99) - This release has had a protracted route to the Wii U as the developers grappled with porting the title to the hardware, though its arrival does eventually bring a high quality puzzle platforming experience. We'll give this one a taste test for review.
Discovery (Noowanda, €6.99/ £5.99) - There are a number of sandbox games like Minecraft on the eShop, now including - funnily enough - Minecraft: Wii U Edition. This entry doesn't have a survival mode, but at a reasonable price does have a detailed and enjoyable creation mode. We gave it a recommendation in our Discovery review.
Jones on Fire (Joindots, €5.99/ £4.59 ) - A platformer with blocky, retro-styled visuals, it promises 'frenetic' gameplay that'll have elements of firefighting; it looks quite pleasing on the eye and is also fun, as explained in our Jones on Fire review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (Nintendo, €6.99/ £6.29) - This first entry in the series launched on Game Boy Advance alongside Blue Rescue team, below, hence the price difference. It kicked off the dungeon crawling gameplay that's now rather familiar, and we'll get cracking on a review.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (Nintendo, €9.99/ £8.99) - This DS entry was released alongside its 'Red' equivalent on Game Boy Advance, utilising the dual-screen option of the last-gen handheld. As expected you battle your way through randomly generated dungeons, and this one was very similar to the GBA equivalent; we gave it a mild recommendation in our review.

3DS eShop
Dementium Remastered (Renegade Kid, €14.99/ £13.49) - This is the second franchise that Renegade Kid has remastered from its DS retail days, in this case potentially filling a gap in horror gaming on the portable's eShop. This entry has new difficulty settings alongside various gameplay and visual improvements; we gave it a solid recommendation in our Dementium Remastered review.
Alphadia (Kemco, €9.99/ £8.99) - If this sounds familiar to Alphadia Genesis on Wii U, that's because it seems to be a sequel or spin-off to that release. The Energi War is part of the plot's backdrop, once again, but this traditional RPG has a new cast and plotline, with a promise of accessibility for newcomers and 30+ hours in the adventure. We'll set off on a quest to bring you a review.
The Legend of Dark Witch 2 (CIRCLE Entertainment, €6.99/ £5.59) - Developed by INSIDE SYSTEM, The Legend of Dark Witch 2 features the same core action platforming gameplay as its predecessor, yet has eight stages to take on. We reckon this is a rather average follow-up in our review.
3DS Retail Download
Project X Zone 2 (Bandai Namco, €39.99/ £29.99) - This sequel to the chaotic original RPG combines characters and franchises from Bandai Namco, SEGA and Capcom, with Monolith Soft and Nintendo also contributing Xenoblade and Fire Emblem characters. We're working on a review but, in the meantime, you can check out our hands on impressions. Download includes "Project X Zone 2 - 3DS HOME Theme" and "Rare Item Pack" DLC.
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight (NIS America, €39.99/ £34.99) - This is a fantastic re-imagining of the DS original, with plenty of free and paid DLC also thrown in. You can get the full lowdown in our detailed Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight review.

Chariot for me and Odd World if it's a good port. I'll wait for reviews. Oh and Stella Glow demo.
Can't wait for Oddworld!
I'll buy Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! when it's discounted down to €10. I need to see reviews first as well. I don't like paying a lot of money for digital games.
And what's up with Nano Assault NEO? It's been on the eShop since launch and it's the one game that has yet to receive a proper discount. In fact it had a bigger discount nearly 3 years ago(€6.49).
Been keen to have a go on Stella Glow
Legend of Dark Witch 2 for sure. Loved the first one, and the second one seems even better.
Race the Sun definitely,I've been meaning to get that and with 50% off, now's the time.I voted for Oddworld too but I'll wait for reviews of that first.
Stella Glow for me, may as well try it given FE Fates is MIA in Europe.
Maybe Chariot. And I probably download Oddworld someday, when it gets far cheaper then this!!
I finished already the Bravely demo (oh, btw, THANK YOU, NL!!! ), will wait for Oddworld review, but might get Chariot, now it's on sale.
I have Project X Zone 2 preordered, but that is a retail on for me. I'll probably pick up Dementium Remasteded and Bravely Second demo. That should last for a while.
Not only one, but two JRPG demos. Awesome. I'm still miffed about Bravely Second's content editing, but at least it's not on the levels of FE Fates. Stella Glow looks intriguing in almost every way (other than not Japanese voice acting when all the songs are in Japanese, like come on). Pretty sure I'm gonna get both at some point.
i luv hilda from stella glow. she looks like an umbrian witch, the way she dresses.
Guess we finally got handheld Pokemon on Wii U... Unfortunately it wasn't in the way I wanted. (Mystery Dungeon, really?)
Oddworld n Dementium for me this week.
Want to get Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team, my original cart got lost in the mall =(
So glad it is on VC, though they missed an opportunity to release it on the 3DS where it would be right at home. xD
Oh, at last ! Dementium in EU !!!!!!! OK Renegade guys, I'll buy it to show you EU is not the noob region that you think !
Oddworld could have sounded pricey, but remember that this series used to be full priced retail games. I'm sure its worth its asking price if the port is good.
I got EO2U as pre-order, so I will get the DLC while it's still free. I'll grab the two demos while I'm at it.
Finally dementium! I might pick up oddworld too or wait for a bigger discount
Might get Dementium, but not sure. I'll try the Stella Glow demo and also download the update for Terraria, which also lands on Thursday.
Not too surprised by the Hot Springs DLC being free for now but rising in around a week & a half to approx £2.50. I have all the Etrian games but haven't played a single one yet.
Can't find anything of interest at the moment but will check on Thursday once I fully identify all the titles.
What the hell is all that PxZ DLC about?
The PMD games are WAY better than just a mild recommendation, trust me on this one. If you haven't played them before, or don't own the physical games, buy them. You won't regret it. And like me, ou'll probably be crying at the end, too. And even then, just like any game in the series (except maybe the first 3DS one), there are lots of things to do in the post-game, too.
I always get tempted by Shin Megami Tensei IV. However, I've already got tonnes of RPG's that I haven't even played yet - including XCX which I purchased on Friday!!!!
So many games, so little time
The free Etrian Odyssey DLC plus the Stella Glow demo. I'm really looking forward to both of those.
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold for me. I only recently completed everything in Etrian Odyssey Untold, so I may wait a while before buying 2.
@whodatninja On the plus side, they'll probably get the rest of the MD games out the way in one go (Since Time and Darkness are pretty much the same game, while Sky is just a special edition.) and I'm certain NOE won't resist a "Buy 2 get 1 free" promotion they like doing. Then we can get to the more appealing DS games like Conquest, the Ranger Trilogy, Link, etc.
Though gee Nintendo, you really thought there were not enough Pokemon games coming lately (Physical Rumble World a few weeks ago, Super Mystery Dungeon next week, RBY VC Rereleases the week after, Pokken Tournament next month... XD). At the very least, I hope Snap and to some extent Puzzle League are not far behind but as its the 20th anniversary year, I would not be surprised if all the Pokemon DS and N64 spin off games were released before the end of the year, especially as Nintendo starts to run low on Mario platformers now... XD
My opinion: Quite a solid week, Europe!
Can't wait to see how Stella Glow plays! Thankfully i'm a RPG fan, feels like the best year for the 3DS since 2013!
No SMB3 Advance again, I hope this won't become our Zero Mission!
I'm waiting now for the new My Nintendo Account system. Might as well since I have enough games to be going on with. Unless there's a mega discount, I'll wait till the end of March for all eshop purchases. Would be nice if they added purchases from last year, but I highly doubt it.
Definitely giving the Stella Glow demo a whirl for sure! Been looking forward to the game ever since it got announced (far more excited for that than FE:Fates if I'm honest).
Aside from that, I'm all good with Bravely Default & Bravely Second demo to sink more time into. Solid week for EU otherwise.
Does someone know what are all those PXZ2 items packs about? And more importantly, what will you find in the SP Advanced mode DLC?
@manu0
NA doesn't have SMRPG, Kirby mass attack, Zelda DS, startropics, etc. EU can't always have everything, can it?
@Don I'm not saying the US shouldn't get these games, we should ideally be getting all these games on the same day. I just don't wan't this SMB3 Advance to become our Metroid ZM.
The demo's are enough for me this week!
Chariot, Odd World, Race the Sun, Chasing Aurora, Teslagrad, Nano Assualt, both the 3ds demo's should do it for me.
I got my old DS out yesterday to finally finish Blue Rescue Team and now it's releasing on VC. I'll pass on double dipping, the sequels are much better and my copy of Darkness still works.
If Citizens of Earth is discounted in NA, is it better on 3DS or Wii U? I know it had issues on both, but I've played the demo on PS4 and enjoyed it.
That is a particularly rich list of sale titles for the Wii U. I'm going to bag me four of them. By strange coincidence they all start with the letter T. Teslagrad, Tengami, and Trine 1 & 2. I have been playing the last two in demo form and they are very beautiful indeed. Hope the first two are as good as reviews suggest.
SMA4 (with eReader levels) when? Getting impatient.
@Aurelis Europe is still waiting for the other SMA games that are already out in the US. This maybe a long wait, if it comes at all. Fingers crossed it does and not on the NX.
Pokémon kicks off it's badass 20th anniversary with two fabulous games...
in Europe. Grr.
Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow was literally my most hype moment of the most recent Direct.
Pokémon GO looks promising, if you aren't disgusted by the mobile gaming industry.
Pokémon Z is practically confirmed at this point.
Pokken Tournament already has a spot at EVO 2016.
The Super Bowl ad wasn't very obviously Pokémon, but it had high production value.
Pokémon Generations is releasing, showing kids what TCG battling was like before every Pokémon had 390 HP and each attack dealt 200 damage. Oh, wait, never mind. Just more ridiculous EX and Mega cards with Japanese writing on them that can give people seizures. I'm actually kind of disappointed about that last one, but I'll leave it in there because it's a healthy rant.
There's just one this missing, Nintendo... and it's staring you straight in the face. The gyroscope, the camera, HOW OBVIOUS MUST THIS BE! Pokémon Snap 3D or Pokémon Snap U needs to be a thing. I don't care how it's implemented, it just has to happen! Imagine a beautiful HD open world where you walk around and take pictures of Pokémon in their natural habitat, not like the on-rails experience on Nintendo 64. Sharing your photos to Miiverse or even (god forbid) ACTUAL SOCIAL MEDIA! gasp Maybe even bring back the printer stations but like at Best Buy instead of the bankrupt Blockbuster. Just imagine, for a moment, the open world of Xenoblade Chronicles X inhabited by all 718 Pokémon in their natural habitats waiting to be photographed by you, a fledgling Pokémon photographer. I would literally poop myself.
Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza (PlayStation) is in X Zone??????
Again GBA Pokemon Games on a console that never released a pokemon game until now (pokken tournament), yet the people who have been playing pokemon over the years in GB/GBC/GBA/NDS/N3DS have to buy a Wii U for pokemon Virtual Console? Nintendo is seriously pissing me off, I have a New 3DS, Im not buying a Wii U.
@Pahvi @whodatninja yep this is the 2nd one. I wish this stuff was on a 3DS but w/e
I'll be buying blue 100% if it hits NA, for my collection since I have all other MD games released in the US, neer mint with packaging. (with the exception of sky, destroyed that instruction booklet for some reason )
Will probally buy both if NoA lets me.
@Scottie Actually, SMA3 did get released, but you're right, I wasn't aware the other two had come out in the US but not in Europe. Ugh. I guess it is gonna be our Zero Mission.
