As anyone that followed us during E3 will know, this humble writer is pretty keen to get into Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, in the hope that AlphaDream will keep up its good form with the series. It'll be the second series entry on 3DS, and it transpires that it'll also do its part in promoting Nintendo's range of amiibo.
Due on 3rd December in Japan it's been confirmed that the game will support a whole load of amiibo figures; these will give special cards for use in battle. The following will be supported:
- Mario (Super Smash Bros. range)
- Peach (Super Smash Bros. range)
- Yoshi (Super Smash Bros. range)
- Luigi (Super Smash Bros. range)
- Bowser (Super Smash Bros. range)
- Dr. Mario (Super Smash Bros. range)
- Mario (Super Mario range)
- Peach (Super Mario range)
- Toad (Super Mario range)
- Luigi (Super Mario range)
- Yoshi (Super Mario range)
- Bowser
- Yarn Yoshi (Green)
- Yarn Yoshi (Blue)
- Yarn Yoshi (Pink)
- Mega Yarn Yoshi
- Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary (Modern Colours)
- Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary (Classic Colours)
According to the rather tiny image of the Japanese box art this entry will also have some online features courtesy of the Nintendo Network, though it's possible that this is just referencing Miiverse connectivity; we'll see whether there's more to that in the future.
Are you looking forward to this one's arrival in the West next year?

YES! Im so excited for the game and this only enhances that. I love amiibo and the M&L series so this will be a must for me
I want a real Paper Mario game.
Cool for this game, sadly I won't be buying it, I wanted a real paper Mario Game, not another Mario and Luigi game.
They're reaaaaaally milking Amiibo figures.
One could say oversaturating maybe..?
Darn, I wanted to see paper Diddy Kong.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Will "Support" 18 amiibo Figures.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Will "Have at least 18 $13 each DLCs".
I'm SO excited and not just because, according to an interview with Alphadream about Dream Team, Mallow and Geno will probably be in this one as side characters
@DarkKirby if this is your logic the. Wouldn't you split up the price with all the titles that utilize these figures? So far that's Mario kart smash ace combat and Mario party. Almost forgot about woolly world.
I wonder what the amiibo will do.
It can't be ANY worse than Sticker Star! BaZING!
No Bowser Jr. Amiibo love? Dang.
Well at least I have a wooly Yoshi and voxel Mario that'll work
Plus I liked Sticker Star. Don't get the hate other than "it wasn't Thousand Year Door". But I don't think I'd want that on a handheld, I wanted that on Wii and was highly disappointed.
Would think this means you only need one of each character.
If silver and gold Mario don't work that would be really odd, unless Nintendo really does just consider them skins for SMB Mario amiibo, but I know at least the silver did something in SMM. And all 3 colors of yarn Yoshi are listed. hmm
"I wont buy this I want a real paper Mario game!" This is a complaint I've heard so many times and it's a shame people wont try the Mario And Luigi series because it added a new style to it. Oh well. I just hate the thought of people not trying this series as I would argue it even more fun than the Paper series.
I wasn't expecting amiibo support for this game so this is a pretty nice bonus. Perhaps I should finally pick up a Luigi amiibo since I've been holding off on buying him for a long while since his stock is pretty common anyways.
Funny how people want a Paper Mario game over the Mario and Luigi games because I for one think they are as good if not better than Paper Mario, though I love TTYD. I love the humor in these games as I am typically not easily made to laugh but these games pull it off!
Even if they don't have amiibo support, I will still get it as I am curious how this crossover will turn out.
I'm so stoked for this game!
I've never played sticker star but can someone tell me why it's apparently the worst thing ever?
@DarthNocturnal Thats interesting. I always found the M&L series to be better gameplay wise. It goes to show how diverse both fan-bases are. Still the crossover shouldn't limit both fans from enjoying it. And FYI I'm one of THOSE people why likes Sticker Star over some of the other games....so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
@LilC It's not Paper Mario. Sure it LOOKS like one but its an entirely different beast. I personally enjoy it but just imagine the feedback for Federation Force and apply that to Sticker Star
@DarkKirby Depending on what you get, I wouldn't really call it blatant $13 DLC.
For the most part, I have been impressed by amiibo's implementation
Please tell me we won't have to wait TOO long after Japan gets this.
@DarkKirby As an amiibo owner it doesn't feel this way ($13 dlc) to me in most situations. This seems like a minor but fun boost to give amiibo you own yet another use. I buy the amiibo of characters I really like and I get to include them in a small way in many games. It has taken a long time, but it's starting to work. Really felt it with Mario Maker and looking back on previous uses in other games like Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, etc. Each new game that has a little feature like this just adds value to the amiibo I already like owning.
Now, if I could just get my hands on every one I want without paying extra I'd be a champion of amiibo. As it is, even with movement on the issue, there is still that caveat.
Looks like having a collection of amiibo is paying off again for me next year. And there's still Woolly World to look forward to this month!
@rjejr It's not odd other then the fact I don't think EU got them. Not sure if Japan did but I believe so.
The more games that support a particular amiibo, the less you are paying for each "use" of it so that makes a difference.
In light of that more titles with support for the existing figures would bode well.
I still think that this is a dumb idea to cross these two frenchises. But still, it looks fun
I just hope that they have improved the pacing, Dream Team Bros was an absolute bore and sadly, the one and only game in the Mario & Luigi series i have never finished.
Didn't think the game was that far on development. Looks good, I'll definitely get it, but I would be lying if I said I prefer another one of these in place of a new, actually good Paper Mario. I really hope Nintendo doesn't give up on that series.
I cannot wait for this! It looks absolutely amazing. Mario and Luigi games have never disappointed me so far.
I can't wait for this.
I also kinda want a darker Mario game like Partners in Time again (who let that slip off with an E rating?), or at least to the point of Paper Mario 2... but I doubt that will ever happen.
Excellent news. Keep that Amiibo support coming! Amiibo are the best thing since sliced bread- there's nothing more satisfying that tapping a figure on the gamepad/3DS to unlock something...
@Dpishere I loved TTYD too, but I still prefer the Mario and Luigi series. We're getting the best of both worlds; I'm looking forward to this game!
I have four out of the 18 Amiibo. Two of those, however, are Luigi. I doubt each Luigi will do something different, so I guess I only have three compatible Amiibo's. I wonder what they'll do...
Grah, I want this game even more now...
Cool. Not that I can use them though because I don't have an NFC transmitter or whatever the heck it is.
Also, people, if you wanted a new Paper Mario, you shouldn't be directing that hate towards the M&L franchise. They're two different series and apparently Intelligent Systems doesn't care about their franchise more than AlphaDream does theirs. Complain to IS, not AD.
@Tops Dream Team was the onloy one I didn't like. The other three had amazing stories and characters, whereas Dream Team just felt under-developed and rushed. The Dream World mechanic was a bad idea to begin with, but was executed poorly.
@DarkKirby More like free DLC as a bonus for buying a $13 figurine.
Good to hear more games getting Amiibo support. This game will be a for sure buy for me regardless of Amiibo support but this is a nice bonus.
Hoping NA gets it in early spring like March. This one of few E3 games that caught my attention.
Haven't played neither a Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi game in awhile, so I'll happily buy this.
I really want Fawful back! But I don't think we'd see him Imagine a Fawful amiibo!
After M&S Rio 2016 3DS & M&L RPG 5 support amiibo, what's next? M&S Rio 2016 WiiU?😝
@DarkKirby your logic is flawed though, almost all of them are repeat chars or variations of a char. (only exception being toad?)
are 5 marios listed, or the 7 Yoshi's listed each gonna do a different thing in game? might want to think that over.
you'd only need like 5 or 6 of them MAX probs and thats if they even do anything NOTEWORTHY AT ALL.
@rjejr Japan doesn't have gold or silver mario same with the EU region, plus all other marios are supported including the SM Mario, which are what the modified Amiibo-Chips in golden silver/gold mario are based off of, which that mario is just a smash mario in a new case... lol
TD;LR So its safe to assume they will work
@BlatantlyHeroic No, they're giving customers what they payed for: amiibo are supposed to be used with games—that's their entire purpose (besides to look cool). If they never gave us amiibo-compatible games, they're be a waste of money to some.
so getting this game. i already have it preordered
I've noticed that some people really hate this crossover. Some people won't buy it because it is not a "real Paper Mario." I can understand that; but need I remind them that if this game sells poorly, not only is it a bad reflection on the Mario and Luigi games, but also on Paper Mario. If you are solely not buying the game because it isn't a proper Paper Mario installment, then you are inadvertently hurting its chances at another major release.
Just saying.
For me, I love the idea. Always did, as soon as it was announced. Sure, as much as anyone else, I'd love a real Paper Mario game, but its a clever idea to mix the two together. As for the amiibo haters, just get over it. Please.
@DarkKirby
"Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Will "Support" 18 amiibo Figures.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Will 'Have at least 18 $13 each DLCs.'"
This is a fairly generic argument that amiibo haters say all the time. For the one thousandth time, it couldn't be further from the truth. The only way this is actually accurate is if you went out and bought Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, etc. for this game specifically. Not to mention that you could literally remove 6 figures from the list since it accepts both the Smash Bros. series as well as the Mario Party series.
Most of the figures listed are used in almost every other amiibo compatible game. I really wish people would see it for what it is, than saying nonsense like this. It twists the truth considerably.
Agree, a paper Mario game would have been better, but why do the Amiibo's seem to be that important to a game. I would rather the game NOT support these toys.
@Uberchu @Spoony_Tech So, region specific amiibo skins? OK, that's just dumb. And must be maddening for the collectors.
Uberchu, I never got an email, any thoughts on why? Did you edit my name or something? I think that's the 1st time that has ever happened.
BTW, Silver Mario is the same pose as Super Mario, not Smash fireball Mario - which I really don't like - so it's more a case of Mario in a Super case. Though honestly I've never read of them being different. Anybody know if Smash and Super have differnet skins in Mario Maker?
@PokeMarioR Source?
Oh yay pay full price for a game where I can't access 18 features.
@Ogbert "Plus I liked Sticker Star. Don't get the hate other than 'it wasn't Thousand Year Door'."
Part of my strong dislike for it is the mechanics and pointlessness of battles. They completely did away with levelling up (with only health upgrades being available) and the reliance of consumable stickers in battle for attacks (including the possiblity of 'no attacks') was annoying. They did away with most of the better RPG and/or story elements, yet still kept turn-based battling and then proceeded to ruin that.
Another aspect was the way in which they used the larger "real world object" stickers. I felt that was poorly done, since from what I remember, it wasn't so obvious in how to use/find them (and were also consumed) and boss battles heavily encouraged use of them also. Frankly, I felt it hit all the wrong notes so to speak and did away with a lot of the good. To me it was a complete disappointment, especially for how long it took to come out.
@Polygon http://nintendoeverything.com/alphadream-producer-wonders-how-geno-and-mallow-could-be-used-in-a-future-game/
Let me just add to the defense of Sticker Star. I liked it a lot. Also: Maybe the best use of 3DS gyro ever. (move the system up and down when looking at special stickers...)
Most of those are repeats so that 18 number is a bit of a stretch.
Dang, I'm really going to have to get an amiibo adapter for 3DS.
