Throughout the Summer there have been efforts in data mining and adding skins to Splatoon, notably with 'playable Octolings' based on messing around with in-game data and settings.
It seems, though, that more players beyond the original hacker are starting to manipulate data in Splatoon to play as Octolings and use the Hydra Splatling. Unfortunately some are reporting that if they end up in a lobby with this particular hacker - reportedly not the same one that first showed playable Octolings - it can cause issues with their save data; if you quit at the wrong time and the game is trying to populate this unofficial character in your plaza it can cause the game to lock and corrupt data.
Splatoon players have been chatting about this on various social media and message boards, with the following summary from Reddit being useful.
This player can soft-lock your save, destroying all your hard work and making you restart the entire game with a blank slate; if you don't take the proper precautions. Don't let this happen to you.
-Tips to be safe around this player:-
Backup your save! Copy it to a USB. Do this now, before you get a chance to see them. If you see them and you lose connection in a match with them, it's already too late. Here's the official Nintendo Support page with instructions on how to do this. If that doesn't help, here's an alternate guide on GameFAQs.
If you spot them, do NOT leave the room! Keep playing until they're no longer in the match. This stops your plaza from trying to load them, which is what destroys your save. Alternatively, you could back out of that room and immediately join another Turf War, but do not return to Booyah Base.
If you are too late, all hope is not lost. But. You'll be waiting until the next Splatfest. I personally do not know this for sure, but presumably loading up the game during Splatfest will wipe the player out of Booyah Base for you, thus freeing your save from the soft-lock.
If you see this player, please take down their name and report it. The closest info we have so far is that "the name started with a k and had numbers in it".
If you want to help spread the word, go write a post on Miiverse about it. Write it in drawing form, so it can spread around as graffiti as well as people seeing you.
Hopefully this issue is minor, with relatively small numbers encountering this issue online. As awareness spreads it's also more likely to prompt an update from Nintendo to block this particular problem.
Have you encountered 'Octoling' mods online? The tentacle hair is the key giveaway, it seems - let us know and keep those eyes peeled.

looks like NWPlayer is an official fugitive now.
Gah... Scary. I would hate to have to start over.
Well this is a bit of a problem. If this happened to me, I would be a bit upset.
Hopes this gets dealt with. Probably too much to hope that the modders will willingly stop doing this to protect others' saves. I've never seen the appeal of playing an Octoling over an Inkling, anyway.
Anybody back it up yet? Is it a small save of just the save or have the updates made it very large? I'm under the impression most of the updates have simply bee unlocking stuff on disc but I thought I'd ask. Don't suppose there's any chance Nintneod has made it so we can just back up our save w/o the entirety of what's in storage yet have they? I haven't backed up in awhile but it was a pain w/ 4 accounts.
So if your save happens to get soft-locked by an Octoling hacker and you've recently made a backup to USB (I do almost daily), can you copy the USB backup back to your console and get all your progress back? Or would that result in having to start the game over from the beginning?
@DarthNocturnal I'm also somewhat happy now because I haven't gotten the game yet either.
Like it has been said I hope they fix this in some way soon enough.
...Thankfully I'm not playing the game right now, I'm thinking Nintendo will take care of things really soon.
We're sure that it is not NWPlayer123.
I recently bought a USB drive and backed up all my save data (including Splatoon) before this 'hack thing' happened. I'm at level 39 and I don't want to lose all my hard work.
Time to take a well deserved break from Splatoon. This issue needs to be resolved ASAP.
OMG @shani Do you think this is the cause of my Splatoon data predicament? I'm always wondering why my Splatoon data got corrupted all of a sudden, so this could provide some explanation. XD
This is why we can't have nice things.
I played last night with no issues (beyond my usual disconnections due to lousy internet) but I will be on the lookout.
I may be uploading a Mario Maker level tonight.
According to the Nintendo site, if i backup (copy) my data to a USB storage device, that device becomes the default save location. But i don't want that; that would leave the save file open to corruption by this hack.
@Mk_II EDIT: Nevermind, won't work according to Nintendo support.
@VeeFlamesNL: Oh yeah, that could be the cause! I guess you haven't noticed any Octoling in your recent matches, did you? I'll surely watch out for them, but I guess they're easy to overlook in the heat of battle.
@rjejr I made a backup a few days ago and it didn't take really long. And yes, there is also update data, not everything was already on the disc.
@Tom41: Yes you can, that's what a backup is for. But remember: the backup works only on the same Wii U, not on a different one.
@Mk_II: I think you misunderstood something. Making a backup means copying it to a different USB storage (not the one you're using regularly) and then putting that USB storage away. As a backup! I did exactly that, I have my 128GB stick connected to the Wii U, with my games and saves that I'm using from day to day. And I have a 64GB stick in the cupboard where I backuped those games whose save data I don't want to lose (like Splatoon, MM, Wind Waker, Hyrule Warriors, etc.).
That is really sad. I don't mind modding or hacking into consoles (I actually have tried some other people's work and it is awesome what you can do) but if something gets messed up it is whatever. The person accepted the risk and if the risk messes up their saves, consoles, etc. it only effects them and they accept responsibility for it since it was only them. It sucks that it is not the case with this hack.
Good thing I don't use numbers in my name... >_>
But seriously, these kinds of modders are just awful. I like it when modders show some creativity, but as soon as it poses a threat to the security of anyone's data, it crosses a clear line between dorking around and ruining the fun.
@rjejr if back up storage space is the issue, you could copy the game file(with updates) to your back-up. Then go into the copy and delete the updates, leaving your main game file complete and your back-up file trimmed down!
If the leg work of four accounts and lots of games is your issue.....good luck!
My copy is loaned to a friend so I'm safe........and missing splatoon! =(
@Mk_II do you have other storage you could leave unplugged with saves stored?
@ULTRA-64 Well my original issue was backing up save data for my download copy of Disney INfinity 1.0. It's 11B and I only had an 8GB thumbdrive so it wouldn't fit. I have bigger thumbdrives now so size shouldn't be an issue, but I still don't see why I need to back up everything when I just want to back up the save file. They are easy enough to see, just not copy.
@shani Bonus points for using the word cupboard. Don't know why, but that word always makes me laugh. Nursery rhyme nostalgia I suppose. Old Mother Hubbard...
@Kaze_Memaryu I don't think the person who is doing this is doing it intentionally. He might not even know. If he is then what a jerk, but I highly doubt that.
@rjejr I was actually about to use the word 'closet' or even 'cabhinet', but then I looked for other words in an online translator and found 'cupboard'. I think I've never heard or used that word since back in the days in school. ^^
If it's only one person, or even a handful of people, then I'm not worried about it. What are the chances of running into this Octoling?
@dkxcalibur Random. It could be your first match or, the 100th. Actually got a call about this about 15 min. ago. My friend told me it was around his 40th match.
It's always really annoying when a few people ruin things for everyone. I don't want to lose my data, so I'll just play lots of Smash Bros and Super Mario Maker until this problem has been stopped.
I just want to know WHY this happens though. The Octolings load just fine in-battle, and obviously the hackers themselves can play around as the Octoling in Booyah Base too. Why does the game crash when it tries to load NPC Octolings in the Plaza? It doesn't make sense to me.
This is also kind of a little Nintendo's fault for making Octolings player ID 2 through the 1.1.0 update. Why would they even do that? If it's to make Octolings playable in the future, okay, but they're not even finished yet as you can see with the hair clipping issue, so why bother putting that in the game already anyway? None of this makes sense to me honestly.
That's sounds scary. I'll be on the lookout on Friday.
@shani Well, sometimes I notice the players that kill me, and sometimes I don't; but I'm very sure I haven't seen any Octolings (that would stand out, for sure) when I play Splatoon. And lots of players have "k" and numbers in their name, so... shrugs
Anyway, the good thing is that I know what to do now.
See, this is why backing up saves to a cloud make more sense. At least then, it would be more difficult to destroy the data...
That's why I don't like data mining, and it spoils new stages/weapons too.
@shani no, i did understand that part. But i don't have a USB drive hooked up now. So what i would like to do is use a USB drive to make a backup copy of my save data, remove the drive and play on. The Nintendo site seems to suggest that is not possible and that you can only transfer and not make backups.
i was kicked by an octoling and nothing luckily happend
@VeeFlamesNL: Yeah that's what I meant, it's totally possible that you played against an Octoling without even noticing it. After all, it all happens so quickly and who knows, maybe the Octoling player never confronted you directly.
@Mk_II: Where does it say that? That's definitely not true. You can just copy the data and then remove the drive (preferably while the console is powered off). If you go into the data mangement, you can either choose 'move' or 'copy'.
@MrPuzzlez: Not really. If the game would save in the cloud, the Octoling occurance in the plaza would also be saved there. So then you're cloud save would be corrupted and you wouldn't even have the possibility to make a backup.
What I really would wish for though would be the possibility to only backup your save data. Right now you can only copy the whole game data, including the saves.
@shani :
shani wrote:
so what happens if you have a physical disc copy?
@Mk_II I'd like to know that, too... And hopefully Ninty's paying attention...
@shani
Even if you dont see the Octoling during the battle, you get to see her at the spawn point when the players are loaded at the start of the battle, hard to miss that.
@rjejr yeah, things would be a lot simpler but for a few more options. But hey, this is the same company that spin a wheel to decide whether to have more than one save file in a game. they have zero consistently on things like this!!
Since it's only one person, that means that squad battles are most likely safe, right? If I understand correctly, the last players you played with load in Booyah Base after you quit the lobby. And obviously, your squad partner or partners would be in Booyah Base when you quit. So, the chances that the hacker is playing with someone else is almost zero, since I don't think the other player would want his/her save data to be erased.
Forced update in splatoon servers that bricks consoles for people using those mods could be fastest and best way for Nintendo to get rid of this problem. Modding games isn't always bad thing but ruining things for others online is different story.
Welp, Better not play Splatoon online until this is patched. I'd rather not risk it since it could happen without me noticing.
Hanging up my splash-o-matic until this issue is fixed. I'll just play some Smash xD
I will just have to take a break from the game till they can find and put in a fix for this.
One of my friends encountered them. Hacker name is K9516B.
If they find him, I hope he gets console banned.
@Naoiko thats funny wii u says that name doesn't exist
@L0laStarr did a search on wii u its says that name doesn't exist
i dont know how to delete tat one
@Birdypirate I don't think it's a NNID, still have to be careful.
Yikes! If there's even a chance that this might occur I'm going to back up my save files now. Thanks for the heads up.
@sinalefa That's true. Although on rare occasions (mostly when something is distracting me), I forget to look at the enemies at the beginning of the match.
I pity everyone who doesn't play because of this. We're playing for hours and it didn't even occur once. The chance for that to happen is really small.
@Mk_II Then I guess you can still copy the save and update data.
"the name started with a k and had numbers in it".
Some of my friends on Miiverse have found his full name. It's "K9516B".
Played around 12 hours worth over the last few nights and didn't see one Octoling. Finally managed to re-claim my B rank after some very stressful games. With this announcement I'll be hanging up my Splatoon boots for a couple of weeks; gives me a chance to finally get into Smash and create some SMW levels. Plus Project Zero is only a month away.
@mariovslink62 That's possible, but even then, using any kind of mod online is highly dangerous, especially on consoles, which aren't supporting mods in the slightest. If the user of this mod is that oblivious, I have to question how he/she managed to get the mod running in the first place.
Glad i read this, though i havent seen any weird stuff going down as of late. Gonna back this up asap.
@Dr_Corndog While I personally also like the Inklings better and think this issue needs to be fixed, I do see the appeal myself; the Octarians are pretty tragic villains once you get into things, so I can easily see why people would want to throw them a bone every now and then.
I been catching up on some playtime with my other games (and anime watching) so I haven't played since the last Splatfest. By the time I start playing daily again, the next update will be out.
While it does sound scary, the chances of finding an Octoling online is like finding a shiny pokemon. Which is really low if you couldn't tell.
@Birdypirate lol it's all good hahaha.
@shani And indeed, it turns out you can! I hooked up an old USB harddrive, formatted it and copied my save data and game updates to the drive. BTW: the Nintendo site talks about "transfering" data, that's why i got confused as i don't want to use the USB drive on a permanent basis.
So there have been some...developments in the original Squidboards thread that started all this.
http://squidboards.com/threads/just-met-a-hacker-online-who-used-octoling-and-hydra-splatling.8588/page-5
Short summary: The original report may have been a hoax, but regardless of whether or not it really happened, an innocent player has been banned as a result.
Long summary: Some "K numbers" player from Chile was banned after people on Miiverse assumed he/she was the original hacker. This happened despite the fact that the person who originally reported running into the hacker denied that the Chilean player was the hacker.
However, some people noticed that the original poster's account of how he met the hacker seemed a bit fishy, particularly the part about how the hacker's NNID supposedly never appeared in his list of recent opponents. He also never actually provided any proof of the encounter, so everyone was just taking him at his word. Then another poster pointed out that the guy had gotten himself put in Purgatory on GameFAQs, a sign that he might not be the most trustworthy of people.
Since then, some of the people who claimed they met the hacker have admitted that they were lying. Others still insist that they have, but none of them have provided any proof of it either. Additionally, these people all seem to have fresh accounts (created today or very recently), which casts some doubt on their claims.
I really have no idea what to believe about the original incident at this point, but it seems clear that the panic alone has already caused some harm. I'm sure backing up your save file just to be safe wouldn't be a bad idea, but I really hope people calm down before any other bad stuff happens.
Typical. The day I buy Splatoon after months of wondering if I should get it, and then I see this.
Facepalms.
But I can't wait for the first splatfest I'll be able to join.
@Fletch261 I'm still level 3, almost at 4.
I saw some people blaming NWPlayer...actually, it's not them. It's someone else. Nikki said that if this happens to you, Splatfest should fix it (it forces the the plaza to reload, which makes sense), by the way. Might be useful to add that to the post.
well, someone else assuming it's even real in the first place. Really beginning to wonder. I suppose if nothing else it's a spooky ghost story just in time for October.
