It's that time of the week once again, when an assortment of goodies are revealed in the North American Nintendo Download Update. This week brings a variety of titles for Wii U and 3DS, including a particularly stylish effort from Frima Studio; there are also some discounts on both systems to tempt you further. Without further ado, let's get to the details.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update details earlier this week. Don't panic! The information you need is right here.
Wii U eShop
Chariot (Frima Studio, $14.99 / $14.99CAD) - One of a number of promising games highlighted by Nintendo when promoting the eShop, this has previously earned praise on other platforms. An action puzzle experience best-suited to co-op, you work to manage a wagon chariot through tricky physics-based tasks, manoeuvring with ropes to haul the vehicle through stages. This has always looked like one of the premium upcoming arrivals for the Wii U eShop, but we'll let you know whether we think it has the wheels for the job.
Maze (TreeFall Studios, $2.99 / $3.50CAD) - This is the second title from TreeFall following The Letter, and will utilise more first-person exploration. The basic goal is to work through a host of environments finding and collecting coins, while there'll also be a splitscreen option for two players. We'll get lost in this and bring you a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mega Man Battle Network 2 (Capcom, $7.99 / $7.99CAD) - A continuation of the RPG gameplay introduced in the original, we can expect new features to be worked in here; this GBA title also picks up a few months after the first game's story, too. Not your classic Mega Man action, but we'll wire in and let you know what we think.
Wii U Retail Download
Wipeout 3 (Activision, $44.99CAD) - A launch retail release for the system, you can now download this if you really want to.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Wooden Sen'SeY (Neko Entertainment, $6.99CAD until 22nd January, normally $10.49CAD)
Puddle (Neko Entertainment, $4.99CAD until 22nd January, normally $8.69CAD)
Cubemen 2 (Nnooo, $4.99 / $4.99CAD until 22nd January, normally $7.99 / $7.99CAD)
Abyss (EnjoyUp Games, $1.49CAD until 29th January, normally $1.99CAD)
99Moves (EnjoyUp Games, $1.49CAD until 29th January, normally $2.49CAD)
3DS eShop
Painting Workshop (Collavier, $4.99 / $4.99CAD) - Following on from the admirable effort of Comic Workshop, this app offers a variety of tools to create and edit minor masterpieces on your 3DS. Though the interface and available options won't suit all, this is still an impressive effort at an affordable price; you can get the full lowdown in our Painting Workshop review.
Best of Solitaire (Cosmigo, $3.99 / $3.99CAD) - As the title suggests, Solitaire is what it's all about, though there is the dreaded promise of "101 variations" including Klondike, Freecell, Spider, Pyramid, Yukon. You can track your statistics for extra fun, but we'll see whether this plays its cards right in our review.
3DS Virtual Console
Adventures of Lolo (Nintendo, $4.99 / $4.99CAD) — The classic tale of Princess is kidnapped, blue blob must save Princess. So far, so typical NES, though despite ageing in some respects it throws up some fun puzzles and challenges. You can check out our Adventures of Lolo review for full details.
3DS Retail Download
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Activision, $34.99CAD) - Another retail title a little long in the tooth (released October 2013) that now joins the eShop ranks
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Shantae And The Pirate's Curse (Wayforward, $14.99 / $16.79CAD until 22nd January, normally $19.99 / $22.39CAD)
4 Elements (Tulip Games, $4.29CAD until 2nd April, normally $6.25CAD)
Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst (Tulip Games, $4.29CAD until 2nd April, normally $6.25CAD)
Van Helsing Sniper Zx100 (EnjoyUp Games, $0.99 / $0.99CAD until 29th January, normally $6.66 / $6.66CAD)

.... Not bad but still not good enough.
nothing for me here...
Still waiting for watch dogs to be a dollar on sale on the eshop Ubisoft!Get on it!
Slim releases this week. Perhaps I'll download Chariot but that's it.
Still waiting on donkey kong land to come
please NOA bring it next week
Wow, a really bad week. Shantae sale seems nice but still overpriced and nothing else of interest at all.
Good ol' slow January. Giving me time to never catch up.
I may get Chariot but not right away.
Could anyone confirm if Battle Network 2 is better than the first one for a newcomer? Thanks!
Chariot looks great. But still no DKC.
I didn't get Lolo on the Wii U because I felt it would be better suited for the 3DS. So, yeah. I'm getting that.
Depressing list. Chariot is great btw, for anyone into the platforming/puzzle genre. It was free with XLG when it released on XboxOne three months ago though ....
@sinalefa
I'm in the same boat on Chariot. Looks very cool and I love co-op games, but just too many games right now. I already feel bad with some games that I really want to play more from Xmas 2014. Now, we added to the pile considerably all at once this past Xmas.
I want Chariot but not for 15€. I will wait for 10€ sale or a 10/10 review.
I'll get Maze! The Letter was so good, so this couldn't possibly be a bad game! Jk, nothing for me. Not this week, or any week until NoA pulls its head out of the ground and starts releasing more VC games.
This Shantae sale is why Nintendo needs to discontinue the DSi Shop - Risky's Revenge needs a price drop big time.
Ok. Seems that every week I vote, and every week seems to be a loser. meaning, most of he time 45%+ of the votes are for nothing. Makes me wonder what people are playing.
Nothing new for me again. I guess I'll save up for Kirby, but man has Nintendo ever dropped the ball with their virtual console this generation. They have a gold mine of retro content at their fingertips to make money with between retail releases and yet all we get are an NES game or two a month and occasionally some obscure GBA title that hardly anyone remembers. It's a frustrating, mind-boggling situation. I mean is there some technical limitation they're keeping quiet about that's preventing them from porting N64 games to Wii U or something? That's what it feels like at this point.
Mega Man Battle Network 2 is fan-freaking-tastic. Next question.
Another week, another update without Donkey Kong Land or Final Fantasy....
Honestly, I may not even care once the games finally do arrive. That's what happened to Duke Nukem 3D on the PS3.
Come on Nintendo, how hard is it to put out Donkey Kong Land? For heaven's sake, Japan and Europe already have the rest of the trilogy! It is possible to put out both Adventure of Lolo and Donkey Kong Land and let the consumer gasp make a choice of what they want.
I'm getting sick of this quite frankly. These are old roms of games that are already developed and in many cases, were localized years ago. If there is no issue with emulation(which would not be the case if the games are in other regions) why the massive delay when it comes to bringing these games over to North America.
Who at NOA is in charge of the Virtual Console for this region? Because to put it bluntly, they suck at their job. Why did it take months after the other regions to finally get Super Mario Bros 3? Why is it taking this long to get the first Donkey Kong Land when the rest of the world already has all three on their Virtual Console?
I can understand delays and having to promote games. But this is an older game from a very popular Nintendo series. It should have arrived a long time ago.
Bring the Virtual Boy Wario game.
nothing for me. still playing through Fantasy Life right now.
Would be all over Shantae if it was 10$ I can wait as I've got plenty to play.
Don't miss out on Chariot! I reviewed the Xbox One version for Pure Xbox and it was fantastic. Such a great local co-op experience.
I'll pass on Chariot. It does look good, but I live on my own so I don't have anyone to local multiplayer with on the regular.
While the Shantae discount might be worth it, I would've chosen Battle Network 2 ... if it wasn't Wii U only. -_-;
If you haven't already, download Shantea now! It's an awesome, charming platformer, and as a bonus, there's plenty of "giggle" action!
I'll wait on a review for Chariot. This week it doesn't seem like there's anything else I'm interested in. I think I'll get Stealth Inc 2 to start going through my backlog.
Shantae is in a bundle right now for $6 and you get about 8 games.... Nintendo prices are just horrible.
That's it, I'm not changing my underwear until NoA releases F-zero GP Legend on the Wii U eShop!!
Good heavens, another game from TreeFall Studios...
Yeahhhhhh no, nothing for me. Meh.
@PleaseUnderstan
I'm still waiting for the Virtual Boy to arrive on the 3DS in general. Sure enough, Nintendo never does the obvious when they can do the something confusing or nonsensical instead.
Finally some battle network. now bring 3 and 4
@MoonKnight7
Pretty much my sentiments. What a waste.
Want to get Shantae, but I see no discounts on Canada's eshop. Bummer.
Just another poopoodoodocacapoopledoople week from NOA. Would it hurt to release more than 1 VC title at a time? I swear this company deserves their horrible console sales.
Please stop using profanity here at Nintendo Life — TBD
@DRL
The problem with Chariot on the XBO is that in co-op, only player 1 can earn Achievements.
No offense intended to the hard-working folks at Frima, but this is a very weak week.
Blah! Nothing for me...
I don't have a 3DS, but I just bought Shantae for the Wii U, so it got my vote since I missed the voting the week it was released. It balances, promise!
Anyone looking for a co-op game to play with a significant other: Chariot is an excellent option that really seems to charm the gals. Really demands coordination in a way that lends itself to that sort of situation.
For best results, you may want to bungee yourselves together. You should be real close...
The only thing im really interested in is shantae but I feel it will be a lot cheaper in a future sale. So I might hold off a little longer.
@midnafanboy There are dreams and then there are hopeless dreams....
what you have there is a hopeless delusion.
@WiiDSmoker Yeah, it's not like the lack of third party games, marketing, increase in diversity in retail games and online services matters anymore at this point.
This year is really starting off with a bang!
Shantae for me!
Nothing even catching my interest this week. Oh well. Maybe next week. How far are we from DKL and DKC coming here? Has it been out 8 months everywhere else yet?
You suck NOA!!! Plain and simple!! Vc is just terrible!!!!!
@Caryslan I agree 300%!! It's just ridiculous already!! I've been saying this for OVER a year on every site and in club Nintendo surveys!!!! Terrible!!!
Where the frack is DONKEY KONG?!
Finally! The 3DS NES VC returns!
BEST BATTLE NETWORK! YEAAAAAAAAAH!
I am so ok with Lolo it is marvelously puzzling and old school. Wish they would release Fire and Ice. It's January and let the drought begin
Well this sucks, I just picked up Shantae last week for full price.
@GamerJunkie
I assume you're talking about the humble bundle, and that's the old Shantae, the DSi version. It's not really fair to compare bundles of games to a single game for purchase, and if you check steam, Risky's Revenge is selling for $10.99, only a dollar cheaper than on the eshop, which really isn't a big difference. I agree that Nintendo overprices a lot of things, and rarely drops things down in price permanently, but this isn't really a good example of that.
Not getting anything unless if that Game & Watch 3DS themes comes here this week.
Shantae is tempting
I have some left over credit on my account and was hoping for a good new game this week, but looks like I'll be holding onto the credit for a little longer.
no afterburner? disappointing
How long must we wait for NOA to re-released Golden Sun: The Lost Age on Wii U VC?!
16.79, eh, reasonable enough, new Shantae time. ( Still paying about 19.31)
@sinalefa It's SO much better! Go for it!
@DRL this looks reallt cool from the trailer...
@blaze8937 I doubt WayForward will drop Pirate's Curse to a lower price than Risky's Revenge. Risky's Revenge is stuck at full price because of Nintendo's draconian rules on the DSi Shop. They can't drop it's price on the eShop until Nintendo discontinues the DSi Shop (which Nintendo has no reason to keep open).
@EJzelda
Look on the bright side. You supported a good developer. That's a good thing.
After playing and loving the hell out of Steamworld Dig, I lamented buying it on sale as I felt it deserved my money at full price. Suffice to say, when the sequel hits, it's a day-one purchase for me.
@IceClimbers
The DSi Shop and Wii Ware and Wii VC shops are bafflingly backwards and I'm frankly astounded that Nintendo somehow fails to clean these up or properly incorporate them into the new eShops.
After all, they wrote the rules for those shops, they are the exact people who can change them!
All I want is for the Wii Ware and Wii VC shops to be incorporated into the Wii U eShop, and that when downloaded, the games are somewhat upscaled for HD TVs (which won't make them HD, but they'll look nicer), and for the games to be playable right from the Wii U menu without having to trudge through the cumbersome and slowly-loading Wii menu. How hard could this possibly be?
Nothing for this week.
Would get the MMBN2 game if I had more money but alas nothing for me this week. I hope they bring Metroid Zero Mission to the eShop in the West.
Please NOA bring us donkey kong land
Where is Bubble Bobble for 3DS? It has been out in Japan for a long time.
@Caryslan
donkey kong land days since the release in japan
305 days
since PAL release
80 days
yes i am counting the days now
hurry up
Nothing, since I spent my Christmas e-Shop funds, save for a few dollars, thought SAtPC is a little tempting at that price. That's still expensive, but I am going to get it eventually.
@Sam_Loser2 Fine how about 10 dollars?
@GamerJunkie The Humble Bundle is offering a completely different Shantae game. The game on sale in the eShop is Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, and that game has only been out for a little over two months.
@Caryslan I have fired the guy in charge of Virtual Console many times but it doesn't seem to work.
Man in charge of Virtual Console. YOUR FIRED!
Shantae is tempting but my backlog is way to big so I'm gonna pass. Nothing too see here. Back to Fantasy Life.
Please NOA bring us donkey kong land
No! You download MMBN2 and you like it!
Adventures of Lolo is a great game. If you have never played it, you're missing out. I can't believe how many people are saying there's nothing good this week when Lolo is here! Playing it on-the-go would be great.
Love mega man
Honestly excited to play The Maze. TreeFall has made a major step up based on his dev commentaries.
America's not doing too badly on the VC front - 14 games on Wii U and 3DS throughout December and January. They may not be games everybody wants but at least they're coming still.
What happened to Nintendo discounting Mario games in January????
Chariot is amazing! Huge title for those saying there's nothing on the list.
@Windy Go into Wii mode for your fix.
@SphericalCrusher oh I do. The reason I keep firing the VC guy is because of the lack of releases for VC. They really should be pumping out VC titles. At least 2 to 4 releases a week on VC from Various formats. They did very well on Wii with VC. Wii-U and 3DS are just lagging
@Windy Yeah, VC on WiiU and 3DS is getting better though.
Pretty mediocre week. I might get Chariot, but that's about it.
Disappointing to see a lack of Chariot hype in here. It's a one-of-a-kind co-op experience! If you have someone with whom you are capable of earnest cooperation, you must look into this one. Highly recommended.
@Sinalefa
I'd say MMBN2 is far superior to the original.
The story is still random school kid fighting adults using Mega Man and his random villains.
The gameplay is vastly similar, just not as frustrating outside combat.
Very accessible, with some challenging end game content and cool nods to both Capcom and Nintendo.
All in all, BN2 feels more complete and more polished.
In addition, Chariot looks pretty cool and they could have done so much worse than Adventures of Lolo.
It's cool, I get it.
I'm frustrated too.
Aside from some early retail releases, Europe has been dominating America.
From Ambassador 3DS', better CN rewards and earlier VC releases, it seems like Nintendo wants the region to be stronger, despite the fact Europeans haven't exactly jumped on the Wii U train.
Maybe 3DS support is better but Nintendo needs unity right now and this division is costing them sales.
@NodesforNoids Well said.
@gamerphil07 @NodesforNoids
Thanks for your opinions. Next Wednesday is my bday so I will pick it up along with poképinball.
Pretty weak week. Was hoping for another Fire Emblem game on the eshop. But seeing as there isn't one I might pick up MMBN2. It's quite sad that Ninty has such a fantastic library of games but refuses to capitalize on them through the VC. I'm still baffled there aren't any N64 games on the Wii U VC. Oh well, maybe one day...
Hot tip, not able to see if it works or not:
"For those with the Wii U release of BN 2 go into the Network menu. Don't actually do anything, just go there and then back out. Then look at what happens to your chip sack."
Shantae is now at the price I expected it to be (and what it honestly should be, considering there's an upgraded console version with no cross buy support at this point). I'm going to go ahead and pick that up.
