After a quiet start to 2015 in terms of new download releases, we see things ramp up in the most recent European Nintendo Download Update details. The Wii U is the main beneficiary with some promising arrivals, while on 3DS one of our favourite HOME themes previously released in Japan finally arrives. Let's get to the details.
Wii U eShop
Chariot (Frima Studio, €14.99 / £13.49) - One of a number of promising games highlighted by Nintendo when promoting the eShop, this has previously earned praise on other platforms. An action puzzle experience best-suited to co-op, you work to manage a funeral wagon chariot through tricky physics-based tasks, manoeuvring with ropes to haul the vehicle through stages. This has always looked like one of the premium upcoming arrivals for the Wii U eShop, but we'll let you know whether we think it has the wheels for the job.
Underground (Grendel Games, €19.99 / £15.99) - Software initially designed with specialist equipment to enable fun medical training, this puts you in control of two robotic arms as you try to assist your companion through a host of environments by solving puzzles. It's an intriguing premise, and we'll see if it's just what the doctor ordered in our upcoming review.
Crunchyroll (Free) - This streaming app provides access to a lot of Japanese anime and drama shows; it boasts of "over 25,000 videos in high definition with professional subtitles". It's a subscription service and can be used with existing premium accounts, or new customers on Wii U can use a free 14-day trial.
Wii U Virtual Console
Dig Dug (Bandai Namco Games, €4.99 / £3.49) - Another early NES game that provided a home version of a popular arcade machine, this sees you digging through challenging levels and figuring out devious ways to take down your enemies. It's a snappy retro arcade experience, and despite its age we still recommend it as a fun slice of old-school action in our 3DS Virtual Console review. This is the US version of the game.
Lode Runner (Konami, €4.99 / £3.49) - Another somewhat primitive, early-days NES title, you guide a pixelated hero through a host of tricky single screen stages to nab all of the gold and avoid enemies; this one's also got a level editor, which was impressive for the time. It's not without its shortcomings and limitations but's worth consideration, as we explain in our Lode Runner review. This is the US version of the game.

3DS eShop
Classic Card Games (GameOn, €6.99 / £4.99) - This is a game where the title really does say it all; a collection of various card and casino games that apparently includes "Hearts, Spades, Euchre, Bridge, Gin Rummy, Canasta, Cribbage, Crazy Eights, Go Fish, Romme, and Skat", with casino games "BlackJack, Texas Hold'em, Double Flop Hold'em, Omaha, 5-Card Draw, 7 Card Stud, Pineapple, Crazy Pineapple, and 5 unique versions of Video Poker". That's a lot of card, and we'll see whether it's a full house or busted flush (we think those are things) in a review.
3DS Retail Download
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Activision, €39.99 / £29.99) - A belated eShop arrival for the beat-em-up released in October 2013, we gave this a modest 5/10 in our review.

Nice to see Crunchyroll in Europe. People who haven't played EDGE yet should also definitely give it a shot, it's an amazing little game.
Nah, I'll wait for Shantae and Oddworld.
Still no new 3DS Virtual Console games? America still has a few we don't, can't we get them at least?
*Captain Toad late release in Italy so that one for me and Crunchy Roll (if it gets release here)
I've been keeping an eye on Chariot but with that price tag, I'll wait for the rev-U.
As for Trine 2, I'll wait for the first Trine if it's a good port before getting both.
RIP VC
That's a lot of zeros...
Damn middle-class infiltration of ideas into the subconscious! When I first saw Coaster Creator listed there I really thought it was an app for designing coasters (you know, the things you put under drinks to not mark the table). I'm so old and sad :/
Might check out Crunchy Roll, though content will have to be good for me to shell out for a subscription. Underground and Chariot might be worth getting too depending on the reviews/descriptions. But I have such a backloggery of other games, things are going to have to really grab me if I'm to get them at the moment.
A pretty disappointing week, but I might get Dig Dug.
Konami, I'm still waiting for the GBA Castlevania games.
@JoakimZ This guy gets it Where are the GBA Castlevanias? 2015 and more trickles of VC games sigh
Skyward Sword theme
2nd week of downloads in 2015 and I'm still not interested in what's on offer.
@JoakimZ @Cloud02 Glad to see i'm not the only one disappointed/frustrated with the lack of GBA Castlevania for Europe/Australia. I honestly wish I knew what they're thinking in regards to when they release these games.
Haven't bought a VC game since DKC2 (and as much as I like DKC games, I honestly would have taken some of the other games they released for the US since then like even one of the Mario GBA games)..
Another terrible 3DS week.
Purchased a £25 eShop voucher via Paypal for £20 in November, got a further £5 from the DDP.
Will probably be 2016 before that £30 gets spent in a half-decent Nintendo eShop sale.
I'll have to check out Crunchy Roll to see if that's worth a sub for me. I do wish they had some kind of age ratings on the shows to help guide viewing for my daughter (CERO at a minimum should be there) and the inclusion of Tatsunoko Productions would make it a done deal for me, but apparently I need to be a premium user to make these suggestions.
Dig Dug and Galaga NES versions make little sense to me given the GBA Namco Museum has arcade-quality versions of these games plus Ms. Pac-Man, but I guess if you only like Dig Dug and don't mind graphical and musical differences it's worth it. It would be nice to see classic arcade games (including Nintendo's) come to the Virtual Console as well!
What trickle? We're doing pretty well. On Wii U at least. Two games a week minimum, whatever those games are, is how it should be. We have had times where we only got two games in one month. I'm not interested in Dig Dug or Lode Runner either, but at least its two more NES games crossed off the list to be released.
8/1 - Dig Dug, Lode Runner
1/1 - Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, F-Zero GP Legend
25/12 - Duck Hunt, Kuru Kuru Kururin, Mega Man Zero, Mario Party Advance
18/12 - Mighty Final Fight, Street Fighter 2010
11/12 - Pokemon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire
4/12 - Crash n the Boys: Street Challenge, S.C.A.T., Shadow of the Ninja
Why didn't you download DKC3?
Well... if I didn't buy Toki Tori and Rush the other day I'd probably grab them...
Other than that it's a pretty poor week for me. Chariot is a tad pricey for my stinginess at the mo, I'll be playing my huge back log while waiting for a price drop methinks.
Awesome that Crunchyroll is coming also to Nintendo platform now. It's a very nice app.
Sega should release those Japan exclusive 3DS arcade and Sega Mega Drive / Sega Mega CD themes already in Europe! My money is waiting.
Pretty bad week, skyward sword theme for me since I'm nearly finished twilight princess and go na move straight onto SS next.
argh all these eshop countdowns are taking my money. i am spending way more for eshop-only titles than on retail games
Crunchyroll! I love Crunchyroll!
CRUNCHYROLL YASSSSSS
Anyone know how much crunchy roll is? (after trial)?
Skyward Sword theme for sure, I really like Ballad of the Goddess (the music which plays in this theme). Excluding that, it's a very mediocre week but I'm sure in a few weeks time the next Hyrule Warriors DLC will come out (still nowhere near beating Master Quest and Twilight maps but more content is still welcome)
You all had a good run so did the U.S.. So let's be Realistic "winter is coming" and that means the drought begins
I got Tetrobot as one of my last DDP games and I have enjoyed it a lot. Tons of clever puzzles and charm.
Super Mario Wooden World? Yoshi Wooly World sequel confirmed!
Yet another week and nothing good for the 3DS. It doesn't matter, I am getting used to long stretches of nothing for it now... The only good game on the horizon is Majora's Mask. Used to be that there was always something I was interested in on the way - how times do change.
Ah, Europe.
Getting Fire Emblem, Golden Sun 2 and 3 DKC games MONTHS before NA, and still complaining about 3 Castlevania games, on a service barely anyone buys GBA games.
It's almost comical how so few people buy the GBA VC games (most just complain they're not on 3DS) and so many complain they're not available in your territory.
@NodesforNoids
That just demonstrates how the eshop should be region-free, not that Europeans are spoilt. The VC should be for games that were never released or localised as well as all of the games people had. The games they release on VC are (mostly) still readily available, so it's not particularly surprising that people don't buy them.
Laaaaaaaame! I have my ticket to Sequin Land, but the train won't come!
Perfect timing of the Skyward Sword theme since I just bought a 2DS
@River3636 I definitely wouldn't say the US had a good VC run, sure they got the Castlevania GBA games and Mario Kart Super Circuit (the latter I really want) but waiting several months for the big games is far from good (examples in which the US are still waiting include: DKC and DKL trilogies, Sacred Stones, F-Zero GP Legend, Golden Sun 2)
Not sure how I forgot to add (Europe) to the title, but have done now. Great start to 2015!
@TwistOfFate619 You my friend have suffered the same fate as myself (no pun intended ) brought no VC games since DKC2 its laughable how long it takes to sort these games to be used on the gamepad and how long new releases take to come out BUT I do have faith Nintendo will sort it out eventually lol Zelda this year will blow next gen out of the water!!
A-a-a-a Game & Watch theme?! I really hope that one comes to the US. Along with Gallery 3.
Nintendo does love to just pass over the 3DS some weeks, don't they?
It would be preferable to wait 2 years for me instead of getting a 50hz VC release.
Think i'll get Edge, Rush, Toki Tori for Wii U and pick up Edge for 3DS at those prices. Paper Monsters Recut im undecided.
Aw man I didn't think they'd actually make a theme based on G&W! Hope it's nice.
Nothing for me this week, not that anything would get a look in thanks to smash bros
@JoakimZ @Cloud02 @TwistofFat619
You guys are still waiting for GBA Castlevanias? I thought us 'Mericans had it bad waiting for the DKCs. Nintendo may not release games equally across the world, but at least it wants us all to suffer just the same.
jaw drops the wii u is just now getting chariot?!?! geesh, nintendo's hardware is 6 years behind and there software is nearly released a year later then most platforms
Nothing really for me this week, outside of Crunchyroll (if it's available in DK) and maybe some of those cheap games. On the VC front; I wish Nintendo would just combine the Wii E-shop with the Wii U one already!
Awww yiss.
A Skyward Sword theme.
I hope dat Game & watch theme comes to NA this week.
Chariot reminds me of Ice climbers.
Did Dug is not the US version, because it doesn't exist. It's Japanese.
So Crunchyroll WILL come to Europe eh? I'll be looking into that this week.
I've been super happy with Nintendo's eShop in just about every way but the Virtual Console section. I'd really hoped to see more systems emulated by now... still, nice to see it's still alive and kicking.
Tetrobot only. I have all the others except Wooden Sen'Sey (not interested, still too expensive) and Tested with robots ! (not available in Germany).
Also, Wii U eshop EU releases next week (15.01.2015):
(Activision) 49,99€
(Activision) 59,99€
(Shin'en Multimedia, ARC SYSTEM WORKS) 4,99€
Are europe download days on the thursday too now?
They've always been on Thursday. They just get announced on Mondays.
Dig Dug doesn't have a US NES version, it was only released in Japan on the Famicom. Dig Dug II, oddly enough, has a US NES version, though.
I wonder if that 3d Disney movie will be released outside of Japan
Resume playing Fantasy life, Nothing too see here............hee hee
Enjoy Crunchyroll, Europe!
Any pics of the game & watch 3ds theme?
3DS Crunchyroll please? Q-Q
Not sure if I'll get it this week, but Chariot looks like a quality release. Also, Tetrobot has been one that I think I'd like.
@Grumblevocano the virtual console is still lacking everywhere but Japan. The Castlevanias, Demon Crests, And the Fire Emblem games were great additions. The new games is why I'm still good. Hyrule Warriors, Bayenetta, Smash, Toad and I still play MK8 those VCs were great fillers. Problem was they should have been spread out more through the year and not just in one clump. I heard a rumor that we will get N64 games this year.
I want the 2 Indies but wish they were under £10.
I've given Crunchyroll a go and I like it. Being able to get the app on my phone too is nice. I'm going to try out the two week trial and see if there's enough stuff I like to justify subscribing. I think this weekend I'll be binge watching a few series.
