It's that time again, North American gamers, with details of this week's Nintendo Download Update treats now here. The headline arrival is rather obviously Super Smash Bros. on 3DS, though we have some other choices — including a Castlevania title's Virtual Console début — to consider as well. Let's get on with it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier this week? Fret not, the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
99Seconds (EnjoyUp Games, $2.49) — Another entry in the budget series to make the transition from DSiWare to the Wii U eShop, this time around it's all about a race against time. It very much brings to mind greedy arcade coin-ops, which we rather admired in our DSiWare review; we'll take a fresh look at the home console version soon.
Red Riding Hood (Brave Rock Games, $1.00) — Listed as edutainment, this appears to be an interactive storytelling app for young children, with some minor choices given to change the path of the story. We're see what big teeth this one has in our review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Castlevania: Dracula X (Konami, $7.99) — This is the SNES port of the PC Engine's Castlevania: Rondo of Blood; this is the first arrival of this version on the Virtual Console in the West. It may not necessarily stand up to the heights of some of its contemporaries, but fans of the franchise will likely find much to like; we'll get to slaying fiendish beasts in our upcoming review.
Wii U eShop Permanent Discount
Just Dance Kids 2014 (Ubisoft, $19.99 from 6th October, was $29.99)
Wii U eShop Temporary Discount
POKER DICE SOLITAIRE FUTURE (RCMADIAX, $0.69 until 30th October, normally $0.99)
3DS eShop Retail Download
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, $39.99) — The big arrival this week, Nintendo's iconic brawling franchise makes its portable début this week. Featuring heaps of content, a daunting roster and — most importantly — excellent gameplay, this sets gamers up well ahead of the upcoming Wii U release. You can learn all the details required in our Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS review; this is available from 3rd October.
Tenkai Knights Brave Battle (Bandai Namco, $39.99) — Our review will be with you soon.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Jett Rocket II (Shin'en Multimedia, $5.99 until 23rd October, normally $8.99)
Tappingo (Goodbye Galaxy Games, $1.99 until 16th October, normally $2.99)
3DS eShop Demo

Smash Bros please and thank you without an eShop crashing.
woohoo
Holding out for smash on U..Can anyone comment on tappingo..Kind of a weak selection. I hope smashtober sales are better!
Smash is a must!!!
Since I do not own a 3DS, this will be a quiet week for me. But then, I am still trying to complete Xenoblade Chronicles. I am 100 hours into it, so am at the last leveling/side-quest completion grind. Maybe by the time I am finished Smash for Wii U will be out.
Looks like me and @Knuckles (see what I did there?) are hoping the same thing. As long as the eshop runs better than Club Nintendo we should be fine
There are no more Smash sales. Today is the last day for the sales. It ends at 8:52am PT. Anyways getting Smash retail and I might download tappingo.
So what time exactly will the Smash Bros. download be available?
Smash time. My body is ready.
Smash retail for me, although, isn't there supposed to be a Smash update we can download, even before getting the game?
@WreckItRyan Either in 2 hours 20 minutes or 3 hours 20 minutes (never sure if it's 9AM or 10AM PST)
is the poll even needed this time?
Dracula X is not a port. Companies couldn't port TG-16 games, so Konami remade Dracula X. Are all Castlevania games with Simon Belmont ”ports” of the original Castlevania. Anyway, looking forward to downloading it and retiring my CIB copy.
99Seconds? WiiWare? What's the meaning of that?
Just smash and 99Seconds this week But finally Smash!!
Probably going to get smash digital this time around and maybe down the road get it retail, also wish that Game & watch Galler 3 came out to NA.
I really thought Shantae: Pirate's Curse would be this week. I even put money on my 3ds ;_;
@NbaJunkie Tappingo is a decent puzzle game. If you like the Picross games and/or Sudoku, then you would probably enjoy Tappingo.
I'm not downloading anything from the eshop this week though I am getting the physical retail version of Smash Bros and next week I'll download Circle of the Moon.
@PewnyPL So soon? I thought it would be available tonight at midnight, which means tomorrow at 00:00.
Dracula X is a good Castlevania game. It's only problem is that it's not as good as Rondo of Blood, but no other Castlevania is.
Got Smash pre-ordered so I can't wait!
@WreckItRyan 12am et/11pm ct/9pm pt.
Just the demo for me as i'm getting Smash physically.
I'm up to my neck in Hyrule Warriors, so I can do without anything on the U for a while. Will be cueing up Smash tomorrow morning so it will be waiting on me when I get off work for the weekend. Awwwww yeeeeeeah.
@UltraLaserTen You sure you didn't get AM/PM reversed?
@Olmectron Well, the Smash Sales started/end at that time, and I remember downloading something previously on thursday at that time, so I'd say so. But as this is a major release it may be wrong.
Ok, who voted for Just Dance?!
I was scared Red Riding Hood would be a remake of Little Red Hood
@PewnyPL Oh, okay. Sorry. Yep, in the article it says it'll be available since October 3rd. The common thing would be releasing it at 9 AM PT tomorrow, but as this is a major release, they are making it available tonight at midnight, but I think it varies per zone.
@PewnyPL I'm sure, for those on the East Coast, the game comes out at 12am midnight.
@Olmectron @UltraLaserTen Well darn. That means I will be asleep at the time...
Wii U got 2 new games, a VC game, and both a temp and perm discount on games, but I think 3DS still wins this week
And just to make sure 3DS wins the week it gets a demo of a game that's also on the Wii U and seems to be better there according to the NL review but only 3DS gets the demo:
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/wiiu-eshop/color_zen
Oh well, someday Wii U will get SSB, and HW is out now, and B2 is coming, so 3DS can enjoy it's week of total domination
Oh, the kids are getting 2 cartridge copies of SSB for 3DS, though we never did find that double pack.
Dracula X!
@NbaJunkie Tappingo is pretty good. A lot of puzzles. The controls for some of the last puzzles can be annoying - but it's overall pretty good.
@PewnyPL @UltraLaserTen @Olmectron Thanks for clarifying! ...looks like it'll be a late night for me.
@WreckItRyan 6AM for me (I'm from Europe, and my 3DS is imported from USA)
Weak week for downloads, smart move. With Smash Bros on the scene with a midnight release to boot, I wouldn't be surprised if other games get overlooked. Glad I'm getting this a download because the cartridge wouldn't leave my system for other games.
@KillScottKill Castlevania Symphony of the Night is.
Smash Smash Smash Smash Smash Smash...
SMASH!
Anyone who doesn't want Smash or Castlevania just doesn't like video games.
23% nothing for me this week, unreal.
@BigH88 Symphony of the Night removes the best thing. The only thing that improves is the player.
@unrandomsam what?
Not getting anything.
@BigH88 Nope. ROB is much better than SotN.
It DOES come out at 12am central time right?
How do I even find out?
I will wait to get Smash on the Wii U
I'm trying to figure out if I should pre-order a physical copy or go download, and what time it shows up on the eShop will directly factor into my decision. Anybody know the official word on that? If it hits at Midnight Eastern Time, I'll definitely go with the Eshop Download.
I seem to remember downloading Super Mario 3D World and A Link Between Worlds at midnight EST, so I imagine that will be when Smash is available for download, too. If you are in a different US time zone, download it then go play in line at a GameStop midnight release and tease everyone still waiting.
Thought a certain genie was going to belly dance onto the (3ds) e-Shop today. Oh well, like Smash, for now it just has to go on the back burner, due to more important things consuming my wallet. Otherwise, I would have gotten Smash, or it.
@Capt_N
Shantae is due for a mid-October release. It's possibly the only game I'm more excited for this year than Smash.
@NbaJunkie I got #2 the other week and enjoyed it. I am getting the forst one today with this discount.
Finally I can own Castlevania Dracula X even if it's digital. And Smash Bros of course but I preordered because I buy physical copies when possible.
@XCWarrior Well I don't like Smash, but I am down with Castlevania. However my game pad took a dump on me so...
I have Rondo of Bood in my Wii, so I can skip Dracula X.
I will buy in retail Smash Bros, so i don´t need to download a game at a high cost without box and cartridge.
I will download Solitaire game because it is very cheap, I waste more money in the metro or bus, so it isn´t a bad choice.
@Ralizah: Thanks for letting me know, & I agree with you on - "It's possibly the only game I'm more excited for this year than Smash".
So far the E-Shop doesn't seem to have anything about downloading the patch. Also just says a generic "Download here at midnight 10/3" with no time zones specified
@coolaggro The patch might be included with the download so you will download both at once!
Picking up Smash Bros at Midnight at my local GameStop.. All aboard the Hype Train!!!
@BigH88 In SotN the big focus is on leveling and finding gear... What he means is that in ROB you don't upgrade your gear and level up and all that.. The only thing that improves is your ability as a player..
@undead_terror thanks for the reply. I was just hoping it was available for a pre-download like they did in Japan before the release. Saves time on downloading I guess?
Anyway, yeah not a big deal but I'm sure others were curious too
I'll be getting a physical copy of Smash Bros tomorrow. Can't wait!
I don't have a 3DS so i can't get smash but nothing for me...
@XCWarrior But not everybody is downloading smash. I'm getting it retail so I voted "nothing for me this week" since really I'm not downloading it and that's what the question is asking. (I think that's what I'm supposed to do at least)
For a second i thought Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ would've gotten a Wii U version. My goodness, i really love that game.
Happy Smashing!!
Nothing from that since I am buying physical Smash Bros.
I fairly certain that I'm waiting for the Wii U version of Smash. Other then Smash, the only thing that peaks my interest is the Castlevania game.
Can't wait to create chaos online in Smash. Buying a physical copy tomorrow.
Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS
Getting smash, but retail copy, so I can share with my kids.
Cruddy week again with the exception of Smash.
Tappingooo!
Where's Pier Solar????!!!!! It's on PSN!
Smash Bros! YES!
To get Smash... or a new TV so I can stop playing Wii U games in black & white with color spots threatening to pop out my TV for my birthday tomorrow...?
Depends how much my folks love to throw money at me for my birthday present. Indecisive...
@Landesca Supposedly coming later.
Oh good!
Nothing for me this week.
(Going physical for SSB43DS)
@KodyDawg In Japan the day-one patch was included with digital download. Should be the same here.
I would say SSB for 3DS but i have no money for anything right now . I would probably prefer it on Wii U though
I'm downloading all Castlevania games, good or bad.
@Klunk23 I'm waiting for the day Nintendo Life adjusts the poll to say (buying digital or retail). Cause yeah, I still go physical whenever possible. But I personally still vote for the digital version to acknowledge I am going to buy something.
Castlevania Dracula X. That was a great game.
And before you start, yes I know ist's a port and no I don't think it's inferior. it's actually very good, with arcade action and a very good difficulty. The only reason why people say RoB is better is because it has anime cut scenes and dialogues.
UGH NOTHING AS USUAL.
Lol just kidding. This is one week where I actually can't say that.
Nothing for me might get smash bros later but I'm actually one of the very few whose not a big fan of it. I'm just not a fan of fighters. I'm chomping at the bit for Fantasy Life though. Its just around the corner
Someone on Miiverse said Smash Bros was briefly available on eshop yesterday before being taken down. I don't know if anyone else seen this
Smash and Dracula X for me this week.
@Mega719 That would make ZERO sense for North America, because our eShop updates today..
Another lousy week for the 3DS. Where the hell are the VC titles???
@B3ND3R it was an accident he said but i know he was very much lying
no 3DS VC? normally id be pissed off, but i has smash bros 4 to keep me occupied on 3DS, and wario land 4 to keep me occupied on Wii U
Tenkai Knights Brave Battle won't be released until the 7th and is $29.99 according to the eShop
Pretty lame week for someone who isn't getting Smash right away. But I have my hands full with Triple Deluxe anyway.
So weird that the only Virtual Consoles on the American Wii U are NES, SNES and GBA. Just puzzling.
Will have to wait on Smash and Hyrule, since I just bought Wii Fit U and DKC:Tropical for the Smash sale, need to save up again. Definitely getting Bayonetta 2 no matter what on the 24th.
@Windy Same here. Fighters just never do it for me. Odd because I like brawlers like Final Fight and Golden Axe and games of that ilk.
@Undead_terror @SheldonRandoms @NoUsernameHere H.Y.P.E.
SMASH BROS.
SMASH BROS RETAIL MIDNIGHT HYPE THRU THE ROOF
we got 40 copies at my work a few hours ago, so excite
getting it digitally at midnight, but still, cool to look at and hold
I saw the shipment of smash on Tuesday.... so depressing. Of course my gamestop isn't doing a midnight launch. Ah well I'm going to try to go during my lunch hour tomorrow.
I'm going to pass on Super Smash Bros for 3DS for the time being. I'm still totally and utterly sucked into the wonderful world of Hyrule Warriors. Next to Mario Kart 8 its my GOTY on Wii U.
Just Castlevania: Dracula X for me. Getting the physical version of SSB tomorrow morning.
Gonna attempt to pick up Smash at midnight. If not tonight, tomorrow. Either way, I can't wait!
Nothing for me this week, but since I have a huge backlog I don't mind!
I really recommend Dracula X for those who haven't played it. One of my favourite Castlevania games. Just amazing.
@Zodiak13 yeah same for me. I love the old Golden Axe. From what you mentioned you sound like your 40 something years old. Is that right? If so, were getting old bud lol
@Ryno ill be saving my nice cart of dracula x as well now.
to everyone else: no one is concerned with 3ds vc
@ThomasBW84 Wiiware =/= Wii U eShop, but you said 99 Seconds was on Wiiware (probably because you mentioned DSiware).
@Prof_Clayton Oops...
Kind of a crap game week for the Wii U.
@Captain_Gonru Not for Europe, it was delayed and I smell a delay coming for NA (or world wide) as well.
@Captain_Gonru - Santa Claus is coming this year too, I just hope they both don't come on the same day
Man, I really wanted Gargoyles Quest 2 or Demon's Crest. Castlevania still has the October/Halloween spirit but I think I might jump on Hyrule Warriors and try out that Dark Link character.
Nothing for me coz I'm getting physical copy of Smash!
I know that the PC Engine Game did come to Japan. I wish that we got Rondo of Blood. I just want more virtual console games on the eShop in general and in system types offered.
Nothing for me this week, though I will be picking up my copy of Smash Bros before I go to work tomorrow.
I chose POKER DICE SOLITAIRE FUTURE. Just for fun. I will be downloading Smash today though.
@Captain_Gonru - Well I'm always wrong - I blame it on Nintendo being so odd - but I'ld guess they announce an ND on Monday for Wed. We really don't know anything about the modes in SSB U, which is insane for a game that's supposed to release in 6 weeks. And the amiibo are vaporware. CT:TT I'm not too worried about, it's a $40 puzzle game that doesn't make or break the holidays for Nintendo.
Watch_Dogs on Wii U has a date, B2 has a date, Sonic Boom has a date, Pac-Man GA 2 has a date, but Nintendo can't date 2 of it's own holiday games? #@@#$%^& Watch Dogs!?!?!
@Captain_Gonru - We're talking about games we want to DL on the DL topic, so we're only marginally off topic. That's pretty good for me.
I decided about a month ago that CT:TT was finished - EU in Jan - and they haven't dated it yet b/c they are waiting for SSB U to go gold so they can date that first and fit in CT whenever, so when we hear 1 we'll know both. So we're on the same page calendar watching. Won't be long now. Cant be.
Meh, Wii U SSB for me, so nothing for me this week. It's cool, I'm still trying to get Deus Ex:HR:DC and Ace Attorney:PW:DD beaten so I can move on to Hyrule Warriors and prep for Bayonetta 2... WHEW!
I got SSB4 last night, love it! I was thinking about getting a physical copy, as I like to do with all of my games, but I couldn't wait to go to the store. I had to switch my 2g SD card to a 16g SDHD card that I had lying around, was worth it.
I said SSB because it has nice graphics and 3d to it!
And how do you download Pokémon special demo code???????????
I have too KNOW THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Pokémon games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
