The latest Mario Party 9 trailer is in and shows off some of the 80+ minigames you can expect when it launches in March.
Long-time Mario fans will pick up on countless references: Super Mario Sunshine's Piantas make an appearance, but there's plenty more to see if you keep your eyes peeled.
How many can you spot?

Graphics look sharp... But the day Mario Party 15 comes out will be a sad sad day for humanity.
edit: Just had another look - some of the mini-games look pretty darn fun! I *maybe will pick this up, as it looks like it is doing something different, and looks like less of a copy/paste then the other iterations.
So... Many... References...
Never even played a Mario Party game. Could this one be the first...?
The box art looks amazing.
Also, the minigames really looks fun. More fun than in Mario Party 8. And I like the Boss Battle thing!
References ? You mean the Rayman rocket riding reference in 0:41 ?
Game looks like the best Mario Party in years though.
That actually looks really good! the only MP game i own is MP 2 for the Wii VC,i had MP 8,but sold it,hopefully this one will be much better than 8,based on the trailer i can already tell it's gonna be great!
I think there was a zelda reference...
That looks like it's a lot of fun to play.
Never played a Mario Party game before. This looks amazing though.
Only played Mario Party DS and I think one of the 64 ones. This looks like the best one though.
Have they sorted out the problems from Mario Party 8?
It didnt even fill the full screen, it was fixed at 4:3 with no option to change it to 16:9 (similar to Super Mario Allstars 25th Annivesary game).
I could understand it with SMA because it was in reality a SNES game that might not look brilliant when stretched out on a modern wide screen TV but there is simply no excuse for such Lazyness with a Nintendo Wii game such as Mario Party 8
Why did Nintendo have to ruin an otherwise perfect game by car-pooling? @superstar: nothing was wrong with the aspect ratio on MP8. I played it with my Wii/TV set to widescreen mode and there was no stretching artifacts. Some games mostly the action took place in the middle of the screen, which was fine.
@13 I think you can play with the original game play AND the car-pooling
@1 Why?
Dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmit it looks like there's a purely random minigame there (the one where everyone is running into blind tunnels and one of them is death). I hope there's an option to turn off pure random ones... no fun at all why not just roll a dice and see who gets the highest?
And is the entire game set around all 4 characters in a car, or is that just one game mode?
You can actually move your Bullet Bill unlike in Mario Kart
I absolutely LOVE the box art! The game is looking really good. Like Nintendo actually put real thought into it this time. I can't wait to take it for a spin!
Boy oh boy. I've got to get back to Mario Party again. I've played 1 - 5 and nothing else after that since I was broke and was pulled into other good games like Super Mario Galaxy. Mario Party 9 looks good, though I feel that it will never top my most favorite in the series Mario Party 3.
LOOKS AMAZING just what is it with ninty and numbers? MK7, MP9, etc
I just like that new logo animation they have, with the remote flying over to form the "i"
Looks fun.
@Rated_R_Superstar: Mario Party 8 was released relatively early in the Wii's life cycle, back when Nintendo's first priority on Wii games was making sure that players could see all relevant information on any TV without needing to letterbox. Due to the nature of the game, this required using borders if played on a widescreen TV. Nintendo has since changed their stance on this, and as this trailer clearly shows, the game does play in widescreen.
I doubt the carpooling thing is the ONLY mode in the game...that just wouldn't make sense at all. More likely, it's just the main NEW mode of the game, leading them to want to show it off as the central focus of the trailer. In fact, confirmed...check out 1:50 here. Peach is clearly moving alone on foot there. What I do find odd is the apparent lack of coins.
I'm a huge fan of the boxart. Delightfully vibrant! The game... ehhhh. I might still pick it up — the last Mario Party I got was the 4th. Trouble is, the games were fun back when I had loads of friends ready to drop by my place on a whim. Getting together a group of like-minded Mario Partying individuals isn't so easy anymore.
This looks amazing!
This looks interesting. Much better in appearance then MP8 I must say ( I never had it but played at a cousin's house, and that was BORING). Probably won't pick it up though, because I'm pretty much alone when it comes to liking mario games in my friend circle.
The graphics look excellent. Will this be any fun with just two players rather than four? Will the game AI fill out the other to slots to keep a four player party or can it work with just two people in the party?
@TTGlider: With the exception of unique play modes such as Duel mode from Mario Party 3, the series has always used AI to fill out the roster to four players. It can, from my experience, still be plenty of fun with two players and computers set to Easy, though. It basically makes it a competition between the two of you even though the AI is technically there, plus their terrible playing tends to be hilarious.
I'm really interested in this game now. I didn't like MP8 at all, and only borrowed it from my brother's friend. Felt very stale. This one, though, reminds me soo much of the N64 Mario Party games, particularly the minigames.
Can't wait.
I'm glad that the carpooling mode isn't replacing the regular mode as I'm not so sure about it but the boards, minigames and boss fights all look awesome!
I'm actually very excited for a Mario Party game now.
i haven't played any mario party games yet, but this actually looks kind of fun.
Eh...might have to try it out. Just glad that they're FINALLY doing something different, lol.
And I think someone said that the "classic" mode is still in there, which is nice.
And cry I will. I forgot this series wasn't dead.
Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but I am following this game more then anyone in this page. There has been no mention at all about a Classic Mode or the use of coins. This isn't a new mode, this is how the game runs. The way the description is on the fact sheet and also that they happen to mention other modes but Classic, it's most likely there isn't one at all.
Btw there are sections where your character can jump out of the vehicle. Though they will return back to it at some point.
The Vehicle thing addresses an issue people had before with pacing, that it takes too long for your turn. This way you won't bored waiting because everyone's move's is going to affect your own.
Also the boards would need to be changed for it to work with the old aspect.
Looks like a nice refreshing take on the Mario Party formula. Quite honestly, I'm very interested about MP9. Looks like Birdo's playable, too. I hope Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong are playable. Maybe Rosalina?
Donkey Kong hasn't been playable since the 4th game.
Haha, at first I was freaking out and all "Why is there no Luigi on the cover?" I mean Daisy, Birdo, Waluigi, and even a Yellow toad are more noticeable then he is. Its funny though once you find him.
I never really liked Mario Party games. This trailer was not bad though.
This pretty good looking
I like how the video is 720p when the game, itself, can never achieve that without an emulator. ;P
Lol, I always love the 1 vs. 3 torture-style mini games where 3 players are locked up in a room and one player bombards them with a barrage of attacks. XD
are they making this for the 3ds soon?
like i made in my previous comment in another article....
I think what would make the Mario Party franchise more better is to bring back retro mini-games. such as (MP3) Toadstool Titan, Frigid Bridges, Eatsa Pizza, and M.P. I.Q. now (MP2) Hexagon Heat, Lava Tile Isle, Bumper Balls, Balloon Burst, Look Away, Lights Out, and Face Lift.
Extra Comment following my choice of mini-games: luck mini-games (only 4-5). (MP4) Panel Panic (so friking random), Bowser's Bigger Blast, Darts of Doom, Mushroom Medic, (MP3) and Merry-Go-Chomp.
Others:
MP3
Locked Out
Parasol Plummet
Tidal Toss
Makin' Waves (MP4)
Granite Getaway (MP6)
Snow Brawl (MP6)
Wrasslin' Rapids(MP6)
there are so many puns in mario party...
Also, I hope they make rosalina a playable character. or at least a comet observatory board.
0:50 It's the level from New Super Mario Bros. Wii that everyone hated...
In fact, this game is absolutely filled with NSMBW references.
Oh and BTW I think coins got replaced by the silver mini-stars. Odd decision if you ask me.
Looks SO much better than mario party 8
The car looks like it could be rather annoying. If that is their solution to pacing problems then I think they misunderstood the complaints. Most of the complaints I saw were about having to watch the AI players move without being able to speed it up.
Other then that, it looks good. I have MPDS and MP2 and they are rather fun. I can only play 2P though because I have 2 classic controllers, a DSi and a 3DS.
And I miss DK. His N64 model is so ugly even by N64 quality that you grow to like it. D:
Do you HAVE to use the car?
@Stuffgamer1 I agree that Mario Party 8 was an early Wii Game but none of the other early Wii games had this issue, also being an Official Nintendo game you would expect better
On the plus side though I have to admit this the trailer for MP9 does look very promising
Mario Party 8 is extremely dull. Thank god 9 breathes new life into the series.
At 1:08, what the heck are they doing? are they trying to tackle each other or something?
BTW I personally am excited for the new game play in the car. It seems like a fresh idea so don't knock it before you try it!
Wow. Luigi isn't on the cover...
