SEGA's digital brand manager Ken Balough has confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II will not make it to Wii.
In a post on the SEGA forum, Balough confirmed it wouldn't appear on Nintendo's home console:
But no - the reason Episode I was on the Wii was because we wanted to bring the Sonic 4 saga to the widest possible audience. Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii - for reasons most people have probably guessed, but that doesn't mean the SEGA isn't supporting Nintendo platforms, we have a very strong partnership and will continue to do so.
So there you go.

Hope it's coming to the 3DS and as a catch-up title to the WiiU then. Ninty can not want people saying "You’re not having such a widely anticipated game on your consoles ? You’re worthless, Nintendo!”, right ? Edit: If it isn't coming to a big N console at all i'd say it would be good if Nintendo told people why.
So, no Wii but possibly the Wii U or maybe the 3DS?
This had better mean it's got a Wii U release. Otherwise, releasing an "Episode 1" without ever following up with a sequel for one third of the fanbase anticipating it is a really big jerk move.
hope it comes to the 3ds eshop
Hmmm. I'm not that keen on this title. But if they had planned a WiiWare Version I would probably buy it. I don't own any of the other consoles. So: No WiiWare version = No money from me. It's their own fault.
The wii hate never ends....
See U on Wii-U?
To be honest, I'd rather they backport the first one to the eShop, and release this one alongside it.
Im happy and glad that I never purchased it on Wii now
I bought the first one....now that i know that sega isnt going to give us a second one i regret buying the first now....wii hate never ends...
for reasons most people have probably guessed?
My only guess is either the Wiiware size limit is too small or
it's coming to Wii U's online shop.
Why doesn't he stop playing guessing games and tell us why it's not coming to Wii?
@Shiryu that comment was funny. Lmfao...
@Link79 I would wager the WiiWare version had the lowest sales of the first episode and that compressing it to fit in 40MB just isn't worth the hassle.
You stink Sega. Also where are the Game Gear games, Monster World 4, Super Hang On and the Wonder boy Arcade title. That does not sound like a strong partnership with Nintendo.
Isn't it pointless to release EP1 for Wiiware and not EP2? I mean I will go over to a friend's and play his XBOX360 for this game, but still. 3DS and Wii U anyone?
Sega also needs to release Vectorman 2 on the Wii Virtual Console.
@ James
I thought episode 1 would have had decent sales on Wiiware.
After all Sonic has been pretty popular on Nintendo platforms ever since Sega went third party. I'm rather burned up that I bought Sonic 4 Ep 1 and now I'll need another system to get the other part
"Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii - for reasons most people have probably guessed"
Well, just humour me Mr. Balough...what reasons would they be?
It's not like SEGA should owe Nintendo anything...After all, Sonic games only tend to do better on Nintendo platforms, and the Mario & Sonic games only sold a measly 15 million copies...
Got episode 1 though!
Well, at least we won't have to hear any whining fanboys complaining about everything this time around.
Here's for 3DS.
Terrible news, what are the reasons?
I got an Xbox 4 Christmas... so I'm good!!
This was a given when the WIi didn't get Generations. With the expection of a few indie games coming next year Wiiware like the wii is all but dead.
Well, I'm not surprised... the Wii is on its last legs and ready to get pushed aside by the Wii U. But I still find that releasing Episode 1 but not 2, and likely not 3 or 4, a bit stupid.
Sega, what were you playing at releasing it via download and not retail?
Up yours then, Sega.
two things...episodic releases should have at least two episodes. also, Sonic 4 is not very good. i don't remember if it was this site or ign that noticed it, but the control was way off. how could they screw that up? because it's sonic and they're sega and that's what they do?
Another problem is Nintendo themselves. The Wiiware version of Sonic 4 Ep 1 has always stayed at 1500 points, where's the other day I got the 360 version for just 320 Points. Nintendo really need to have their own Deal of the Week program, and maybe even reduced older content as well. The other 2 do it, so there's no reason why Nintendo shouldnt.
@Linkstrikesback Second the motion, bring both games 2 the eshop. SEGAAAA, DO U NOT WANT MY MONEY?
>:[
@28 totally agree...it's what makes others so fun to check back and browse. Steam has this down to a science. Playstation has the right idea...but they could use some more work.
It would be excited for Wii-U to follow the same path.
This is really stupid not to release it on WiiWare, especially since I got Episode 1. Still, I own a PS3, so at least I'll get to play it.
I totally regret buying the first one now.
its bad but i got a ps3 so its good. hope it comes on U tho
Meh. PSN demo for the first one left me underwhelmed. Might pick 'em up in a few years as a bundle or something. Lack of Wii version doesnt effect me. Ep 1 is overpriced on Wii anyway.
"for reasons most people have probably guessed" I swear Sony probably paid them not to put it on WiiWare.
Awwww....
/buys PS3 today anyway
I see it coming to Wii U Ware, after all wasnt there a rumor of a Sonic Title appearing on Wii U day one? this could be it, after all it doesnt have to be a disk based game to be a launch title
This is no great loss. The first one was decent but nothing spectacular. The fact remains that Sega continues to churn out Sonic games every year but still can't make anything that comes close to matching the megadrive/genesis versions. I wonder if the poor hedgehog shouldn't be put out to pasture. I didn't like the fact that the game was separated into different 'episodes' anyway. The idea that you are getting only half the game and paying a premium (as far as downloads go) just didn't make sense from a consumers point of view.
Guess Episode II didn't quite fit under Reggie's idea of "small, bite-size chunk of games" coming to the Wii in the future. If this doesn't classify as that I don't know what will!
Source: http://vc.nintendolife.com/news/2011/12/reggie_virtual_console_on_wii_isnt_dead
So just because Wii U is coming SECOND HALF NEXT YEAR, we won't get THIS episode on Wii? Why not put 2 on Wii, and have 3 on Wii U?
@Blue_Yoshi
Rather than jumping to irrational conclusions, perhaps we could, you know, actually stop and think for a moment. Wiiware has had a lot of problems, from the filesize limit, to the lack of advertising. Perhaps, just perhaps, they didn't want to deal with it anymore.
Anyways, I have a 360, a PS3, and a PC that plays computer games. Chances are it would go on sale on all of these platforms, unlike a Wiiware version. I'm set.
bad move on SEGA's part. but if rhythm thief turns out to be a great game and SEGA continue releasing games for the 3DS, as well as the wii U, i'd forgive them for their mistakes and errors.
For 1500 wiipoints i was waiting the secuel. But now i won´t download episode I
I'm going to guess mostly due to file size restrictions and that, according to the interview, Sonic 4 Ep 2 has a new graphics engine to counter the complaints that Episode 1 wasn't very visually exciting for a 2010 title. The Wii probably wouldn't handle it, and SEGA aren't gonna want to build a Wii-friendly version to put on a dying download service where sales are far more scarce.
Still rather surprised it's not on Steam though. Or Episode 1, for that matter.
EDIT: Ignore that about the graphics engine, forgot it was coming to smartphones. The filesize and low sales are probably major contributors; and that Nintendo will likely have a new home console out by the end of next year.
It means that it's easier to port to WiiU since it will have HD and easier to port from the PS360. Obviously, Wii has the largest install base, so this is the only "logical/illogical" reason for a no-show for Wii. I'm used to it now. Hopefully with the WiiU, this nonsense will stop.
Glad I didnt by the first part after all. Even though I have a Xbox 360 I still wont buy this due to Sega not releasing the other part on the Wii. And people wonder why Sega left the console market. With decisions like that its a wonder they even are around to make games anymore.
I am waiting for some idiot to start a petition now in the forum section. Like those ever work.
My guess is the first part didnt sell well on the Wii but did good on the PS3 and XBLA. Anyone know the sales of part one on each of the systems?
I would guess that Sega isn't relaeasing it on Wii because Nintendo itself isn't hardly supporting Wii's E-Shop.
Everything that Balough says here is complete BS. He should at least give a half decent reason why it is not coming to WiiWare instead of copping out and leaving us to decide why. And I wouldn't call Sega stabbing Nintendo in the back for the 3rd time in less than a year a strong partnership.
eShop plz
That's fine, I'll be too busy playing good games to notice anyway.
Considering they are releasing it on all other consoles PLUS two mobile devices I find it intimidating they won't bring it to the Wii. Teasing us Nintendo fans that it's on every other gaming device......Oh, Sega
It's not Sega's fault the Wii is underpowered and has a terrible online distribution service with an archaic download limit. >__>
Luckily for me I'll be getting this one on PS3. Metal Sonic is in it, I can't wait.
What's a WiiWare?
40 MB... Really!! Only 40, come on! This is the reason Super Meat Boy didn't make it to the Wii Ware service.
If it's not coming to a Nintendo console, I'm skipping this and it's predecessor. >
I didn't actually like the first one anyways so if this one won't come then so be it. It's ashame that Sega doesn't want my money. I mean paying two price for one game is a ripoff already. Sonic 4: Ep 1 & 2 could had being a physical title to begin with, releasing half of the game and not the other half is like releasing Sonic and Knuckles without Knuckles or releasing Super Mario Bros. 3 with worlds 1-4 w/o worlds 5-8 or releasing Final Fantasy VI through the World of Balance w/o ever continuing through the World of Ruin. Such sad choice indeed.
NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, damn it i wanted to buy both on Wii but now ill buy it on 360 btw its cheaper there
I'm not too worried, I have a 360 so I'm lucky.
"Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii - for reasons most people have probably guessed" Was that just a nice way of saying "Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii - because the Wii is dead and nobody cares about it anymore"?
i understand no wiiware release...the wii is on it's last legs and now that skyward sword's out theres really nothing left for the system. but sega shouldn't forget it's still got an enormous fan base on the wii.
at least, they should put this on the 3DS. but perhaps it has to do with them not wanting to down-scale the HD version from the other systems.
Hopefully we'll see this on the Wii U at least then, with the HD version of Ep 1 also.
Sonic is back and running better than ever, but for only one game on Nintendo systems.
Sigh... I guess you won't get my money then.
You guys want to know WHY the Wii isn't getting it? It's because of the Wii's ridiculously stupid 40MB download size limit for WiiWare games.
Episode 2 is going to be bigger and better (new graphics and physics engine, probably more levels, new character animations, better sounding music, etc), and it'll most likely exceed the limit, this is the same reason why the Wii didn't get Sonic CD (and a crapton of other games for that matter). If you want to blame someone, blame Nintendo for making such a silly decision in the first place.
@Clinker
Sonic Generations (HD versions) says Hi.
@Kage_88
Reason 1) Look above and read my post.
Reason 2) Believe it or not, the Wii's time is up.
Also the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics franchise is for the CASUAL MARKET (emphasis on the casual). Casual games always sell a crapton anyway, it's just a cash cow and nothing more.
Well you can't blame Nintendo for the download size limit... WiiWare was pretty much just a tacked on service to begin with. If WiiWare was there from the beginning, Nintendo would probably of made the Wii a little more powerful to deal with it.
The eShop can seem to go over this 50MB download limit so I see no reason as to why Sega couldn't just put them on the 3DS. It's just as powerful, if not more powerful than the Wii.
I feared it. Hopefully It will come to Wii u, but I guess not.
First Sonic generations and now this...good job Sega! Just make another Mario and Sonic at the olympics! Now that is what we want (sarcasm overdrive)!!!
Though I admit that the Wii (and Wiiware in particular) are almost dead!
When I saw Ep's 1 price on Wiiware, I went and got Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. Two classic games, that would be longer and better than Sonic 4 at almost the same price was too good to pass up.
Sony won't let me buy their downloadable games but Nintendo does, so I will definitely skip this one.
hate sonic 4 anyways they shouldof mzde it 16 bit
Haha, Sega getting back at Nintendo for totally winning the console wars I guess.
I'm not into any Sonic, but despite the limitations there really is no excuse for releasing anything called "episode 1" and then not releasing anything else related to follow. It's really a bad call all around.
If they didn't like the service, thought it was 'dead', or the file limit, they shouldn't have released the first one for wii or called it something else; just plain ridiculous.
@Ren (70): Because SEGA is such a good fortune teller that it could see how well Episode 1 would do on WiiWare before it was released ?
If they could only release it with making a loss why should they ? The biggest responsibility for WiiWare is on Nintendo's side. So if they can't convince 'em./ take the loss i understand SEGA in not releasing it.
Saw this coming a long time ago. No surprise here.
What a jerk. Sega "wanted to bring the Sonic 4 saga to the widest possible audience," but doesn't? And no real reason is given? Have fun on my blacklist, Sega.
First no console Sonic Generations, then this?
It's like they want me to buy a 360.
I think to make up for this Sega should definitely release Phantasy Star Online 2 for the Wii U. The controller would be perfect for a game like that and that game would one of the only ones I'd actually pay a monthly subscription to play online.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTMsSi65rCI&feature=related
It was overpriced anyway
@ battletoad
Point taken.
I do still believe that kind of foresight didn't take any mystical gift. Anyone who's had a Wii since launch (not to mention an industry player like Sega), know's full well what a support-free-wasteland WiiWare is and has been all along. Releasing a major IP on it is a gamble for the future at best, so it would have to be made almost surely at a loss. A series like that should be budgeted as a whole and developed at once to be released in short bursts (like Strong Bad was), if it is to see even a tiny profit. Clearly this was just poor project management, (someone in charge didn't understand the WiiWare model, went ahead on faith in the Sonic brand, and only budgeted for one episode at a time, so had to cut losses by bailing half way through, which just looks bad).
This is almost the way Sega approached and failed with it's consoles. Dump lots of money into expensive product, gloat about it's features with a lackluster ad campaign, wait for a fast profit and when it doesn't come bail on the product all together before the generation cycle is even finished and take an even bigger hit in lost revenue, reputation, hide out, then "boom" another new product, etc.
The Entire Sonic franchise has had this same problem since the start. someone needs to properly manage that dang business, take some time with the product so it really works and feels right, and enough time so it doesn't cost so much, a simpler accesible ad campaign, and then really stand behind the product for an extended period. Improve ONE kind of approach to a new Sonic until it really works maybe over a couple games, then the masses will buy it up and know that can be consistently good.
A certain other blue and red mascot won the war because the gameplay is always honed and reliable, and each new layout/control system took years to develop and stayed for at least 2-3 games.
Bloody typical rubbish.
Hopefully it'll come to the 3DS or WiiU
Sonic's my name. Disrespecting Nintendo is my game.
Sega you're stupid.
@ KrazyBean That still doesn't explain why Sega choose not to release Episode 2 when they already released the first one. Like ep. 2, the first one also exceed the 40MB limit as well, it just wasn't in HD on the Wii. Sega's just too proud to admit they won't make a WiiWare version cuz they want to piss Wii owners for not buying enough copies of Sonic Colors.
Now we had an unfinished game on WiiWare that should had never being there in the first place. That really pisses me off, if you already commit to releasing the first one, bring the second and make it complete. Heck they can make the game look like a GBA title and I wouldn't mind. The Strong Bad, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, and Tales of the Monkey Island titles also had episodic games on WiiWare as well, why are they better than this crap, they completed all their episodes from beginning to end. WTF can't Sega do that? You begin but you won't end, that's like selling FFVII for full price with only disc 1 & 2 w/o disc 3 & 4 to complete it.
I do wonder if Sega will offer any sort of compensation to those poor saps that bought the wiiware version of ep. 1.
guys its going to come to Wii U probably, after all Wii U is more powerful then the PS360 dont fret if you want to play it on a Nintendo console, youll get your chance soon enough just like a few of the other HD games
@retro_player_22
Oh wow, you're seriously saying that the Wii isn't getting Episode 2 because you Wii only gamers didn't buy enough copies of Sonic Colours?! LMAO, OK then! I might as well just say that the HD consoles didn't get Sonic Colours because HD gamers didn't buy enough copies of Sonic 06 and Unleashed.
I can understand that you guys are upset that Episode 2 isn't coming on Wii because Episode 1 is on there now and that makes sense but please find another reason because that's just invalid. I'm not trying to be an a** but I really don't know what else to say.
Episode 2 is probably going to be 1 - 1.5GB in size this time...please explain to me how they're going to compress that to 40MB? That RIGHT THERE is a valid reason why Episode 2 isn't coming on Wii. Sonic 4 is a multiplatform game and if Episode 1 can fit on the Wii and Episode 2 can't then what can they do? They are trying to make a better game and that file size limit is hindering them from doing that.
Oh well, I'm done. If this doesn't make sense to you then carry on dissing Sonic and SEGA you guys, Imma gonna play some Generations on my 360 with some Battlefield 3 to boot. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I love how all of you are so angry at Sega right now. It's not their fault. Blame it on Nintendo's 40MB cap on WiiWare.
Well, I can handle having Generations only on 360 (as my Dad has one), and I cannot understand why Sonic CD didn't come to WiiWare or Virtual Console, but this is where I draw the line. I was forgiving for Sonic 06, but this is a load of BS. You know, I finished Episode 1, and seeing the ending with Metal Sonic, I was hyped up for the next Episode. So, I waited an entire FRICKIN YEAR to hear this crap? What are your reasons, SEGA? Give us friggin' answers, and stop beating around the bush. This is the HUGEST dick move you have ever pulled off. I mean, downloading on the Wii is easy; getting stuff off of Xbox LIVE is hard, cuz half the stuff doesn't even work on our Xbox (which I blame Microsoft for, because nothing is wrong with our console). I don't see why you would do this. You don't release a first episode on a console, only to say "well, this is where you stop, and the others get to move on." So thanks a lot SEGA. You've dampened the spirits of a fan who started his videogaming on one of your Sonic titles. The only possible way this could be forgiven is if both Episodes are released on the eShop. Speaking of which, we don't have Game Gear games yet, either. So where are they at? Oh, wait, I'm sorry. You don't give a direct answer to a friggin' QUESTION!
@UKD
Sonic CD didn't come on the Wii because of the soundtrack. It's too big for 40MB. The Wii version of Sonic 4: Episode 1 can't even handle the music the PS3/360 had (which is kind of LOL worthy), let alone the Japanese AND American/Europe versions of Sonic CD's soundtrack.
About the Episode 2 thing...I've repeated myself enough times. I'm fed up.
Ranting Thespian Mad! Ranting Thespian Smash! Get Revenge On Sega!
>(
If it's not coming to wiiware, Sega should never have released episode 1. At the very least they should have the balls to tell us why they changed their minds. Yes, they are to blame for being dishonest with their fans.
For me this is a crushing blow. WiiWare is the only way I would have been able to enjoy Episode II and I've been obsessing over it since Episode I first came out.
Curse you, Nintendo! Curse you for being stubborn about your stupid 40mb limit!
@KrazyBean: I'm not trying to be snarky here, but that was my best guess. What I'm getting at is that the Wii can accept channels downloadable onto an SD card of up to 32 GB. So, if Nintendo acknowledges this, why don't they allow it? However, SEGA's to blame too. They know the Wii's limitations, but go right ahead anyway. That's not too strong a partnership, if you ask me.
@Blizzaga: I feel your pain, man. My Dad has an Xbox, but half of the stuff we download doesn't work. So thanks a bunch, Xbox LIVE.
@uel: Most definitely. SEGA's given Nintendo the crap treatment since they got Colors.
@KrazyBean: By the way, I see your reasoning there, with the file size. I just didn't read all the comments right away.
Sega was going to put sonic 4 episode2 on wii ware but they took an arrow to the knee...
@UKD (93.): I think with the 40 MB limit Ninty isn't really worried about how many SD cards you need to get all your games on. I guess that the Wii isn't able to load up anything SD beyond that limit or that the loading wouldn't allow any game to run smoothly. But i'm not a tech nerd so i might be totally wrong here.
Oh well, at least I can download Episode II on my PS3. I got a huge sale on the 20th anniversary Sonic Bundle a while back on the PS3. I also have Sonic 4 Ep I on Wiiware, too...
Uh oh, don't tell me Sonic is getting banned from Nintendo Consoles!
@Darkrai: So I have to buy an expensive new HD console to play a sequel to a decent downloadable game? No thanks. I'll just stick with the superior Genesis games on VC and Sonic Colors.
Oh my God, there's no WiiWare verion of episode 2 and I've been waiting for nothing? Great, now my younger brother will be disappointed. He spent some Wii point for nothing. Now I'm mortified and angry. I cleared episode 1 and I was curious about what's next as Metal Sonic appeared. I bet Sega gave up on everyone especially me and my brother. =(
Not sure what the fuss is...Sonic 4 Episode 1 sucked anyway. I got it on PS3 just over a year ago cheap during their Xmas 2010 sale and wasn't impressed by it at all....lousy music, terrible physics, levels ripped off almost directly from the older games and a last level consisting of a damn boss rush. I've really haven't got much hope for Episode 2 whatever platform it's released on, so it's not a great loss to the Wii. And yet despite that travesty, Sega have also give the Wii by far the best Sonic game of the last 12 years in Sonic Colours, which remains a Nintendo exclusive. There's more to thank Sega for than to hate them for.
@ueI For real. Notice in the end of the Episode I, Metal Sonic appeared and lot of people were curious of what's gonna happen next as the message, "To Be Continued...", shown for those of anyone played that game on WiiWare. Very huge disappointment and cop-out from SEGA and I'm surprised that the second episode won't come out on WiiWare version. It's like they gave up on everyone. =(
then stick in the this game Sega kkkkkkkk
so us wii owners were just an experiment that sega used to make the ps3/360 versions better?
