PAC-MAN 99 is the latest battle royale game on the block, and it's exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Following in the footsteps of Tetris 99 (and the departed Super Mario Bros. 35), this competitive online game takes a classic video game franchise and injects some modern 1v100 (well, 1v98) everyone-for-themselves gameplay that's arguably worth the price of a Nintendo Switch Online sub on its own.
The game is free-to-play for online subscribers, but just as Tetris 99 has, it also features downloadable skins and extra modes to enjoy if you're willing to pay for it. We'd assume that a future physical release will bundle all this DLC onto a cartridge — again, just like Tetris 99 — but for now you'll have to go digital if you want all the extra goodies.
Below we've gathered together a list of ever PAC-MAN 99 DLC skin available to download, plus information on prices and a little poll at the end — let us know your favourites!
What are PAC-MAN 99 Custom Themes?
While you might be very happy to play with the classic Pac-Man skin, there are a host of downloadable retro 'skins' you can use instead. These include several classic Namco games and franchises, such as Galaga, Dig Dug, Rolling Thunder and Xevious.
Using a different skin will change the visuals and the sound effects, but it has no affect on gameplay whatsoever — they just look cool and give the game a different retro flavour. It's still called PAC-MAN 99, too, even without Pac-Man.
How many PAC-MAN 99 DLC Themes are there?
There are currently 29 themes available, although one of those is the default Pac-Man skin. So, 28 extra skins, if you like.
How much are the PAC-MAN 99 DLC Themes?
The classic character skins are available individually for $1.99 / £1.69 / €1.99 each, although you can buy the DLC bundle which unlocks all the skins plus the 'Mode Unlock' (extra gameplay modes) for $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99.

Paying real money for these themes is gross. Unlocking them like in Tetris 99 would be preferable.
That feeling when you haven't played half the referenced titles, but they're still turning your head their way courtesy of Namco x Capcom. The Legend of Valkyrie, Baraduke, Wonder Momo, The Return of Ishtar... I'm biased towards them purely after spending many hours (literally, these maps tend to take quite a bit of time) with the respective characters in one ragtag army that puts Avengers to shame. And I can barely look at a depicted Octy here without my brain starting to move its gears about what characters and how many turns it should take to beat it.
Why are some of them called "Namco Classic" instead of their actual name? Took me a bit of a while to find Mappy because of it.
$2 per theme is such a ripoff. Love the Galaga theme, which we could unlock by playing. Major oversight for consumers here.
Gave it a try and got bored after 2 games.
To be fair Pac-Man has never been a favourite of mine.
Back to Tetris 99!
@Kilamanjaro
It took a while for Tetris 99 to offer the themes via tickets or special events through the NSO free battle game. Might be the same here but then again this is a Bandai Namco release rather than Nintendo and maybe they are not as forthcoming with that approach.
Luckily the Classic is my favourite.
@Kilamanjaro I think the pricing is reasonable (it's published by Namco not Nintendo and I can see why they'd want to make money off it) but from a gameplay perspective it means it will have a lot less replay value than Tetris 99 or even Mario 35 as you could unlock levels. That feeling of working towards something really added to those games.
Don't get me wrong, it's really fun but just feel I'll get bored of this one quicker for that reason.
@TheFullAndy Really, how did you get the themes originally? Did you have to pay for them?
A lot of those themes would just confuse me, I'd probably forget I was playing PacMan and try to inflate the enemies if I was using the Dig Dug theme
@Clyde_Radcliffe yeah this is the point right? They have a few pricing tiers but keeping themes behind a paywall is kinda lame since we pay for the service. Doesn't matter to me who's publishing as it's included with my annual NSO subscription & Tetris 99 is such a good example of how to do that properly
@TheFullAndy it would seem so unfortunately
Was hoping for a Championship Edition DX+ theme. Dig Dug and Lego are alright but I'll be sticking with classic for now.
you don't even had de decency to purchase the damn things to show here, you just showed the reduced preview screen that everyone has easy access to.
I don't mind a £25 price tag for the whole thing..
.. As long as it stays there, and doesn't suddenly get taken down like Mario35 did.
How long are those servers going to be around?
@Clyde_Radcliffe
If I recall there was originally only only theme and then they started doing special events to unlock more and eventually introduced the ticket system which you could earn through daily play to unlock the previous special themes.
The fact all the Pac-Man themes are available day one doesn't bode well for that approach.
While I won't get any themes, this game is very fun.
@TheFullAndy Tetris nerd here. From the start there were a bunch of themes unlockable by tickets. Aside from Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong, they were a bit rubs. Then they introduced event themes which you got for 100 points in an event. Later these were purchasable for tickets.
I think the full price of the DLC is a bit (a lot) much. Compared to the Tetris DLC which I still weighed up in my head before spending £8 (I think).
@TryToBeHopeful
Cheers!
Yeah it does seem a bit (a lot) much for the DLC.
Yeah no thanks, not having any themes to work towards is kind of going to kill this game for me. I mean I can't really complain since this game is free but I dont think ill be going back to it
@TheFullAndy Also, I love Tetris, and am not very good at Pac-man. Despite loving Tetris, I have maybe won Tetris 99 twice? Pac-man's not going to go great for me.
@TryToBeHopeful
Twice more than me! I have finished second a few times but have yet to win a game. One day!
Pac-Man 99 hasn't clicked with me to be honest but will give it another go at some point.
@Deepdoop Even the emblems, I realised, can only be earned by paying for themes and playing the offline modes. You can't earn any emblems from playing online.
It looks to me that purchasing Mode Unlock would give you the 8 decorative themes, not any of the 20 game themes.
No Katamari theme? Booo
Omg there's a Bravoman theme
I refuse to be part of the mass conspiracy that Pac-Man is a good a game.
THERE'S A MAPPY THEME!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I really wish I could just unlock them like in tetris 99 but maybe they will have some crossover ones.
@Noid Yeah! I was stunned there was no Mappy theme at first but then saw your comment...
Played it on my lunch break. Fun nonsense, will probably play it casually as I did with SM35, but refuse to spend money on this.
Gonna probably get the Rally-X theme since Namco refuses to put it on any of their recent compilations. I used to dump hours into Rat Race on the VIC20, which was just an unlicensed Rally-X clone.
@TheFullAndy I think at least one of them was at like 9am on a Sunday when most of the world is not playing Tetris.
I paid $30 for the deluxe version. Don’t know how I feel about that, but I’m sure I’ll be playing this quite a bit. My two wins were using the colorful and Dragon Buster themes.
Surprised no one mentioned that the Brick and Frame themes are based upon the Block Town and Pac-Man's Park mazes from Pac-Mania.
The Colorful theme is also the maze from Pac-Man Arrangement.
To be honest, many of these themes seem like they would make it even harder to follow the chaos going on in the game than it already is. I voted for "Border" as maybe the only exception. And also for "Rolling Thunder" and "Namco Classic 1"(Sky Kid) because they're fun.
I hope it will be possible to unlock some of these themes through gameplay.
Namco classics 2 for me, i used to love playing mappy on my dads console!
Is Classic Theme 4 from Dragon Spirit? That game has one of my favorite NES soundtracks of all time... but what a weird inclusion.
A 2600 theme would be a bit hilarious.
Hello Namco?... Ms. Pac Man.. Anybody seen her ?...
@Ogbert Ikr? or CE 2 theme maps.
@Desrever it certainly does.
