Review Contra ReBirth (WiiWare)
Still separating the men from the boys.
The Contra series has always been one of gaming's greats: incredibly simple yet fun gameplay, top-notch design, and of course, what the games are most known for, a hard-as-nails difficulty level. After multiple failed attempts to create a good 3D Contra game, the DS recently got a brilliant new 2D entry that,...

Guide Best Contra Games, Ranked - Switch And Nintendo Systems
Compared, Contra-sted, and ranked by you
Contra is one of a handful of franchises that have become completely synonymous with gaming; indeed, chances are if you haven't played any Contra games, then you'll have at least heard of them. Konami's run-and-shoot-'em-up behemoth may have lost a lot of its lustre in recent years (pretty much par for the...

Rumour Konami Is Bringing Its WiiWare ReBirth Series To Switch
Castlevania, Contra and Gradius could all be coming to the eShop
WiiWare wasn't exactly inundated with quality games but it had a few solid-gold gems, three of which were part of Konami's ReBirth series. Developed by emulation experts M2, Gradius ReBirth, Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth and Contra ReBirth adopted a classic 16-bit visual style and...
Nintendo Download Rebirths, Colours, Jedi and Clubhouses (US)
Contra and Star Wars return, and bring along two other games.
Not many surprises this week - Both WiiWare releases were already announced in advance, and the Virtual Console game was expected to be released this week as well. The only surprise is the sole DSiWare release, but we can't imagine anyone being genuinely excited for it! Contra ReBirth is...
News Contra ReBirth Coming To America This Monday
Konami confirms that the classic franchise will be available on Labor Day.
While the chaps reading Nintendo Life over on the fairer side of the Atlantic were blessed with the news that they would be getting Contra ReBirth on September 4th, those of us in North America were left wondering when we would be able to get our hands on Bill Rizer and Lance...
Nintendo Download Contra Rebirth, Dictionary 6 in 1 (EU)
A very underwhelming week for Europe.
Aside from the previously announced Contra Rebirth things in Europe this week are pretty abysmal - Just one other new downloadable thing and it's another DSiWare application with highly limited use! Contra Rebirth is almost bound to be a great pick - It seems very similar to Contra III/Super Probotector on the...
News Contra is Reborn in Europe Tomorrow
Finally a new Contra game for Europeans!
It's been a long time since a new Contra game was released in Europe - Although an awesome game, Contra 4 on DS never made the jump to European stores. What made this even weirder is the fact that it actually included the European Probotector robots as unlockable characters! Thankfully this latest installment...
News Konami Announces WiiWare Plans for Europe
DRiiFT MANIA this month, Contra Rebirth in August.
Konami already released Gradius Rebirth in Europe yesterday, but that won't stop them from releasing another game this month! To top things off, next month they'll be releasing a completely new Contra game which Japan has already been enjoying for a while. DRiiFT MANIA, which will be released later...
First Impressions Contra ReBirth
BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT!
Remember Contra? After Green Beret (Rush 'N' Attack to Americans) it was the definitive run-and-gun game from Konami which saw two games in the arcade and ports and sequels on home consoles. I cannot say I ever played the latter, but the former I remember well. Despite being punishingly difficult (to me, anyway) there was...
News Watch Contra ReBirth In Action
Explosions, shooting and hilarious-looking storyline accounted for
Announced mere days ago, the wait for Contra ReBirth could hardly be described as excruciating for owners of a Japanese Wii. Everyone else, on the other hand, will have to make due with excited air-punches and YouTube videos to get their fix until the title is unleashed in their...
Nintendo Download 12 May 2009 (Japan)
This week sees some catching up and another Rebirth!
After last week's focus on the new streaming media channel from Nintendo with no new Japanese WiiWare or VC content, this week we're back to the standard 7 releases. Most of these are catching up with the NA/EU territories, but there's a couple of new titles in there as well including one that...

i'm keeping a close eye on this one.
Me too, I love the Contra games. I hope it has a progress saving feature.
Contra is awesome!! Now we need Contra for arcade! And Contra: Hard Corps! And Contra NES!
Contra games are badass even tho i kinda suck at them,
I want this so bad. This should be what WiiWare should be used for, not soccer mom family games.
OMN...Oh my Nintendo. lol
Day 1 purchase when it hits NA.
I've never played Contra, but I will now!
Definite instant purchase. Nintendo, this is how you get my money.
Yes! This is sweet I hope we get this soon. I'm hoping for Castlevania ReBirth next.
Hopefully this is a sign the NES version is on its way. The game looks awesome.
IGN is projecting a North America release in the month of August, near its PAL release date.
Result: They came close, but it was September 4 & 7.
I WANT CONTRA ALL OF THEM!!!!!!
Please make it to the U.S by November...
This has my attention. I have to admit, Contra for the Nes and Super Contra for the Super Nes were two of the greatest co-op games created.
Good for the DL service.
Looks to be a good title, can wait to see the actual product.
I just downloaded Contra Rebirth to see how it compares to my beloved Contra III on the SNES.
It's not bad really, perhaps not quite as good as the SNES classic which it seems to be based on, but not far off in terms of quality and fun.
Here are a few things I noted during the first 20 minutes:
On the whole I like it a lot, it's as hard as nails of course just like all the other Contra games, so if you are a bit of a lightweight then you might want to give this a miss!
Cheers @Dazza (comment 18), I was hoping that you would post a comparison, because it was clear from your Contra III: The Alien Wars Review (Virtual Console- SNES), that you appreciated what I consider to be the best in the series (9/10)
Your list is spot on, whilst the Mode 7 and background effects sound really cool, the lack of smart bombs and dual wielding is a worry (I enjoyed the Mega Drive levels on GBA, but weren’t no dual weapons and the lack of top down Mode 7, the main complaints about GBA Contra?).
Thing is I'm such a fanboy that even though Gradius Rebirth only scored a 6, the play time and enjoyment I got out of it was like I was playing an 8 star game.
If Contra Rebirth snatches a Nintendo Life 7/10, then roll on Monday, because in the eyes of this beholder I'll be reveling in a 9/10 game. lol.
Nice one, Darran.
In regards to my above comment 19, previously I had only read Corbie Dillard's Gradius Rebirth Review, I had not read any of the 124 comments below it, so I did not realise that a debate had already taken place about the validity of review scores.
I definitely do not want to be the Nintendo Life noob who accidentally re-opens a can of worms.
First off, I completely understand the diversity of Nintendo Life's readership, which is why reviews can not be solely written for people who have enthusiastically, possibly blindly, followed an entire franchise like me (as I said I'm a fanboy).
Secondly, any reviewer with detailed shmup knowledge ranging from Otomedius Gorgeous, Gradius V, Mars Matrix, Parodius/ Twinbee/ Salamander PSP collections to Cave PCBs in an arcade cabinet (Deathsmiles, Muchi Muchi Pork, Ibara, & Espgaluda II) and compiled a top 100 shooter list, has actually earned my curiosity and increased my interest to read more about what they have to say. The game could get a 3 and I would still want to read their opinion. As was mentioned in the comments, the actual words in the review assemble a more detailed game analysis than any score at the end.
I think that it is cool that many Nintendo Life users turned that comments board into a quality discussion about shooters in general, by the end. Fair play
I was not having a 6 month late dig Corbie, I promise.
@Smashbro99: its going to be on monday
Shame on Konami. It's not released in Italy, as happened with Gradius Rebirth.
I like the game so far
I found the debug menu!
By pressing the firebutton and start button on the titlescreen, you access the menu. You can try the levels as welll as a testlevel, and unlock at least one of the extra characters by choosing Test2. You can also switch on invunerability to shots and enemies, it´s called "MUTEKI"
By the way, it´s a nice run´n gun. The first boss is lovely, and stage 3 is pure insanity Super Probotector is better, but that´s no surprise since it´s best of it´s genre...
hehe...it's come out soon here in the states...can't wait!
downloaded it already, great game. now Konami please give us Contra Hard Corps (MD)
Well I'm done playing easy mode and the game. I could play normal and hard; if I want to die a lot. I have to agree the game was too short; similar to Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.
I'm getting very picky on what I buy now.
im enjoying this game so far, i have to unlock everything though
was happy, great game! ______
