Topic: Will the Sega Master System Ever Get a 9 or a 10 for Any of Its Games?!

I pose this question because if the so called "best game for SMS," which is Phantasy Star, only got an 8 than it seems slim for future releases to do much better?

What do you think?

I doubt it. I agree that Phantasy Star is probably the best the system has to offer, although there are other great games, so any score above an 8 is doubtful.

See I think that Phantasy Star deserved a 10 or at least a 9.

It's hard to say, it really depends on how well the game has aged. Sadly for most retro games, it is a trait that rarely appears.

What makes it difficult is that Phantasy Star IV is so great, it would be hard to rate Phantasy Star above it. Thus the quandry.

I've played a few Japanese platformers for the master system (emulation) worth that score. There is a Wonderboy game that i loved as well.But i wish we'd get some of those Master System imports on the VC.

I bet Shinobi for SMS could get an 8 as well!

I would give Phantasy IV a 10 too!

Personally, I don't see that many 10's out there for non-Nintendo systems.

My main complaint with Phantasy Star IV was pacing. It was a bit sluggish at first. Takes awhile to get the game rolling. I also thought the visuals could have been a tiny bit better. But it was a solid 9. Phantasy Star is ranked right after it in my book. I felt like PS2 and PS3 were a bit of a letdown.

I hope Phantasy Star Zero is as good as IV!

About Phantasy Star the 3D dungeon expirence is rock solid.

The 3D dungeons remind me of the classic computer RPGs I used to play on my Commodore 64 and Apple IIc computers. I used to love games like The Bard's Tale and Wizardry.

I actually prefer the 5 star system better that way Super Mario Bros. 3 can get the same score as Military Madness!

The Ninja is a swell game for the Sega Master System. Also, another little addictive game is Astro Warriors. I would also enjoy the game Black Belt.

Perhaps, Space Harrier 3D will snag a 9 from some rogue video game critic!

I doubt that any Space Harrier game will get a 9. Or even close. Most staff members very much dislike Space Harrier, in any form. The game hasn't aged well, let's face it, although I might not be as hard on the game as some would. Shinobi might grab an 8 or so, but I can't see it getting a 9.

Well, supposedly, Game Pro called it one of the top 25 games of the 8 bit era so maybe it has aged better.

Probably not. There isn't very many good games on the system to begin with (as far as I know), and seeing as how PS (which is supposed to be the system's best game) got an 8, the chances of any other game on the system getting higher than that seems even more doubtful.

Perhaps, there should be a recall in the Phantasy Star score.

Phantasy Star is a 9 IMO, Sonic 2 as well, maybe Golden Axe Warrior will be the first to get a 9 or more, its a Zelda clone but unlike Neutopia its actually just as playable as the Zelda series, Shinobi too deserves at least a 9 whether NL rates as such remains to be seen.
