I asked a question in another thread about the Wii Speak and it's functionality and 110percentful was nice enough to answer (thanks!) but needed a little more clarification. I know you can use this peripheral in games like Animal Crossing, The Conduit, and a few more that are listed in that wiki article. But, can you use it while playing games like Mario Kart, etc? Could I load up the Wii Speak channel, then "Alt-Tab" to Mario Kart and chat with the folks while playing?
Also, I noticed that there is a game called The Grinder (discussed elsewhere on this forum I'm sure) and it will have Wii Speak functionality. I noticed that there is a bit of a Left 4 Dead vibe and, although I'm only prepared to give it a 6/10 from what I've seen so far, I'm kind of psyched about the 4-player WITH voice game-play!
Sorry Magi, Wii Speak is limited to games that support it, which isn't many. There are a few more games being released this year which will make it more worthwhile. As for the Wii-Speak channel, you can send 30 second voice messages to any one of your Wii friends, which is fun. Plus, if you know anyone else who has Wii Speak, you can conference with them which is also cool.
I think I have you on my Wii Magi, I'll send a voice message sometime so you can see what people would receive if you yourself decided to get one. Which I assume was the point of this thread?
I'm actually kinda looking forward to The Grinder for the same reasons. I just hope it's fun enough for my friends to buy it. If Conduit would be a 5/10, I'd hope this effort would at least be a 7.

If the Grinder does turn out to be good I would probably get it. And if it has Wii Speak then I would be willing to pick that up since it would be for a cooperative experience ( mostly voice conversations in game usually annoy me ) .
But yeah I used to conversate with Tails, Hyper Luigi, Chatham and the gang a while back (All NL users), but since no games have been coming out that use the peripheral it's sort of pointless to even go on the channel anymore (let alone any online games on the Wii to begin with). As people said with The Grinder, if it's as good as we're hoping it's going to be, then yeah I'm going to see my Wii friends a lot more. lol

Awww...shucks. I was hoping to get in some Mario Kart goodness with ya'll and do the whole wii-speak thing while I was at it. I may still pick it up just for the sake of having it. It would be nice if Nintendo would come out with some sort of program that would allow multiple applications to be in use so that you could have the Wii Speak Channel open while simultaneously playing a game. That would roxor my soxor!
If Nintendo made WiiSpeak work "behind the scenes" during any game, They would sell more than they could produce. I remember my Atari STe, it also had trouble with multitasking.
Yeah, it cannot do any background stuff because the Wii's OS isn't like a modern operating system, it's more like a beefed-up loader -- think DOS on the old x86 PCs: once a game loads that's it, there's no operating system running in the background to interact with it.
Short of re-releasing a game there's nothing that can be done to back-port new features; it's one of the big criticisms people have made about the system in the past.
Every time you get a system update it's effectively like getting a new copy of the entire OS which was done to ensure that system updates don't break old code. It's a tradeoff and seems to be part of the reason the Wii is so hackable, but at least you don't have to worry about new updates breaking your old games!

Read about it somewhere else too but there is something fishy about it. Just did a little test. Had a game running and asked Machu to send me a Wii message. During the game the blue light come to life. Something is still running in the background.
I also read that the "IOS" is completely erased from memory when a game is running and that the home menu accessible from the home button is hardcoded into every game. It´s not the OS that shows up. It might be true but I don´t believe it. It´s just too dumb to be true. I could buy that the Wii menu unloads but not the whole shebang. I still keep my fingers crossed we get something useful added to the ingame home menu such as a notification if a friend is online or maybe WiiSpeak without the graphics. Just accept and/or deny buttons.
Not sure how Wii Connect 24 works, but you're right about that...kind of annoying really because it invariably happens when I'm trying to load up a game and slows it all down...
I preordered Endless Ocean 2 a few weeks ago for the sole purpose of getting the bundled Wii Speak. It seems like a pretty good deal, however, Skype isn't a bad way to go either for conversing online.

That's actually not a bad suggestion, but it's a shame I'd have to resort to this: I could set my laptop next to me while I'm playing the Wii so I could chat with my fellow gamers while playing things like Mario Kart, etc.
