What's your opinion of the Guitar Hero franchise? - Wii, WiiWare & Virtual Console Forum

A few years ago, I was introduced to the Guitar Hero franchise at my friend's house. My friend had just purchased a cool new game he had heard about called Guitar Hero. My first thought regarding the name of the game was "Is this going to be anything like Dance Dance Revolution? Cause I suck at that game :P" When he brought out the plastic guitars I said "Seriously?" We began to play, and I was missing notes left and right until my friend said "Dude. You're supposed to strum." "Right." I said, as I rolled my eyes. I tentatively strummed the first few notes of the song. "Click"..."Click"...Click" went the little black piece of plastic, as I moved it to the beat of the song. Once I started to get the hang of it, the game became infinitely more appealing! My friend and I were having the time of our lives, and both of us have been fans of the Guitar Hero franchise since. Even though some people may turn their noses up at the idea of playing with plastic instruments, once you get a group of friends together and start to play, the experience is phenomenal. Although my regard for the Guitar Hero franchise is high, I want to know what you think. I've been surprised to find that many people are reluctant to purchase a guitar hero game. I can understand if the price is too high, but I've seen comments under various Guitar Hero articles and videos online that have been extremely negative towards the gameplay itself. What's your opinion of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band franchises?

I love rhythm games like DJ Max, O2Jam and DDR but Guitar Hero never appealed to me. I did enjoy the drums in Rock Band though.

I used to like GH, until the band instruments were released...

personally i'm not impressed. the drum is fun, but other than that, they don't interest me. If I'm just listening to music that I'm creating, i'll prefer to do it on the real instrument, especially since these games/peripherals are not cheap. but i'm happy others like them and that it's successful on the wii.
