You went into the shop and got it. Yes it was originally free and you might or might not have known that but after seeing the channel you thought it was worth getting and paid for it under your own free will. Now they are making it free again and to make up for it they are giving you a NES game worth the same 500 you previously spent. Could they have given you 500 points instead? yes. Would that have been better? yes. But isn't a NES game BETTER than if they did nothing?
I know the "I am getting ripped off" crowd are going to have a go at whatever I say in Nintendo's defence here but I don't see a problem here. At UNI there were places that sold food and after about 2PM everyday they sometimes gave away chips, pies and other things that were starting to go cold because they would have otherwise gone in the bin. What Nintendo is doing would be the equivalent of these food shops notifying everyone who brought pies that day and saying "hey, we know you got a pie today but now pies are free. To make up for this sometime this week we are going to let you pick something of the equivalent value"

If I had to chose (which I don't want to!) I will pick super mario bros 3 or 2 Which one is best as i would like to know. Mario 2 lets you control 4 different characters but it does't look as good or as hard to complete.

Super Mario Bros. 3. This will be my 1st NES VC Game, and the 1st game I will get against my will. I'm forced to get something, so why not the best NES game?

The NES seems to be getting a distinct lack of love recently which it doesn't deserve.

It's not love, it's the value compared to other games in the Shop Channel. And besides, if I really wanted it I wouldn't download it on VC (there are other ways).
I'm guessing this will be Nintendo-developed NES games only, right, as otherwise they'd have to compensate other developers? If that's NOT the case, I'd go for Adventures of Lolo 2 or Megaman 3.

And the problem with that is what? If we decide to download a third party game as our NES game, whatever the third party gets from the transaction will come straight out of Nintendo's bank. The only difference here is that our 500 points is already in Nintendo's bank.

Ice Climber for me. Seems to have a good classic arcade vibe (pretty sure it's an arcade port, though I don't remember seeing that one in the arcade) and it's a good excuse. Count me amongst those confused. I chose to buy the Internet Channel and I wouldn't feel hard done by if they made it free again without compensating me. Even if they gave me a free copy of Super Mario Bros. 2 or Donkey Kong Jr. Math I wouldn't complain!

The anger over this issue proves that you can never please some people. I am glad I get to download a free NES game. If there aren't any NES games that come out from now until we get the refund, I will get StarTropics.

Do people really play these Nes games that much once theyve bought them , i mean beyond the 30 mins play to bring back memories etc ? I think the Nes games should all be free really , i mean there so so old , i remember them being given away free in the gamecube animal crossing,that didnt continue once they realised they could squeeze even more money from the punters , i just wonder how many times we have pay to play the same game , im sure Nintendo must have a target figure for reselling the same game x amount of times to the same consumer ?

It's not. Nintendo had a couple of very arcade-ish console-exclusive titles among their first NES games (Mach Rider, Balloon Fight and Clu Clu Land being other examples). Great game, though.
I already have Super Mario Bros 3 otherwise that'd be top of my list. Super Mario Bros' conversion is meant to be a little poor so I may not get that. That leaves either Kirby's Adventure, Kid Icarus, Ice Climbers, Legend of Zelda 1, Super Mario Bros 2. That's my order of preference.
