What everyone defending this nonsense is failing to recognize or acknowledge is that the Nintendo Shop Channel is closed system, a monopoly, and a point of purchase in which no prices have been changed... ever. There is no other outlet for acqurirng WiiWare titles (even the Amazon World of Goo arrangement gives you a download ticket to be used via the Shop Channel). There is ZERO expectation of discounting over time, and therefore no monetary value in delaying purchases - the price of title X will be the same in a month or a year as it is today. This is the precedent set by Nintendo, in their Nintendo-controlled storefront. To make a first-party title free in the Shop Channel is to make it free to ALL Wii owners - not SOME. Those that paid for this title should therefore be reimbursed their purchase price in points to be used at their individual discretion, not compelled to own an alternate title they may very well have no interest in whatsoever.

This is not about five bucks. It's about equitable business practices towards all consumers in the Nintendo-controlled Shop Channel ecosystem. Any comparsion to another type of purchase is invalid on its face.

Dude ... it's just 5 bucks. Be glad you're getting the free NES game. Nintendo didn't have to give us anything.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

Agreed; it's just a nice gesture on Nintendo's part, but they have no obligation to give you anything retroactively when they decide to start offering a title for free. The VC bit is good strategy as well; there are probably a good number of people who bought the web browser but who don't really know anything about the VC, so it doesn't hurt to entice with a free selection.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

(...good thing "The Magician" gifted me the channel...)
I think... Star Tropics I.

However, if Devil World or Mother 1 comes out during the wait, I will get either of these. (I hope these will not come out at the same time...)
However on top of that, if I do not get a choice of a NES game, I will take what I get. (Free!)

I wonder what would happen if you bough EVERY NES game AND the Internet Channel up to the "free NES game" period...

Only those who paid for the IC will get the NES game. If it was gifted to you, then it'll be very likely the person who sent it to you will get the NES game. Devil World will be classed as an import game (600 points) when it comes to America which does not fall under the free NES game worth 500 points. And NES Mother is a Japanese RPG that relies heavily on text - Japanese games don't get translated so it will never be released outside of Japan.

And if you already bought EVERY NES game already then you'd have to wait until they release more or miss out on the game completely.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

"The Magician" is one of my brothers. We all live in the same house and use the same Wii System.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooops! (How long was Koops' "Oops"?)
...then again, even if Mother 1 was released, such would be 600 NP...

By the way, I think the reason why this offer is NES-only is because Nintendo would have to ask permission from the other companies otherwise.

@Anyone who thinks I'm whining over 5 bucks: I'm not. And again, it's not about 5 bucks. I'm a business owner, and as such, I look for every opportunity to reinforce my customer base and elevate perception of my company. Is Nintendo's giving IC buyers a "free" NES VC title a good thing? Sure, to many it is, but to some it's not ideal. They may have no interest. For a marginal cost, Nintendo could have made everyone happy by refunding the 500 points, and letting IC buyers use them they way they see fit. And in doing so, a "that's cool" moment for some would have become a "holy crap, now that's cool!" moment for everyone. A smartly-run business (like Nintendo) doesn't get themselves into position like this all that often, but when they do occur, they represent an opportunity for a PR coup. For my part, I think Nintendo could have done better with this, that's all.
And anyone that's been paying attention knows I don't need the 500 points.

Yet its only £3.50 and you chose to pay for the Internet Channel in the first place, not knowing that you'll be getting the points back at a later date.

When can we choose the game. I thought it was the start of October.

Someone may have asked this already, but how do you get the free NES? I mean, where do you go on the Wii Shop Channel? etc.

...and you'll have to update to 4.2 System Menu in one way or another if you want to get your freebie. Well played.

OK I need a bit of help here - I never owned a NES so I want a real classic. I already have Super Mario Bros 1,2 and 3 and Ninja Turtles so which other NES game do you recommend?

I want a true classic - something that is a must have. I'm thinking either a Castlevania game, Metroid or a Megaman game. I have never played any of those (I have Super Metroid on VC though) so really don't have a clue which game to get (or in Megaman and Castlevania's case, which is even the best in their series). Help me out please NES experts.

Probably Super Mario Bros. 3. I like the game, but, for whatever reason, haven't downloaded it. Maybe because I played it to death when it was new, or maybe because Super Mario World is superior in EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY. (Search your feelings. You know it to be true.)

But yeah, might as well pick up my only missing Mario download.

Mario 3 has superior level design

Mario 3 has superior items

Mario 3 has superior item storage system

Mario 3 is more difficult.

Mario 3 is not littered with one ups (I cannot play SMW without getting 80 extra guys)

Mario 3 has much better boss fights, especially the end boss.

On the VC Mario 3 has a smoother and crisper visual - SMW on VC is choppy and blocky in many areas. The NES game is superior visually - at least on the virtual console....

Mario 3 has a great challenge system in between levels - the inlcusion of Mario arcade.

I wouild rate the 2-d Marios as such :

1. SM3
2. Super Mario 2 American
3. Super Mario World.
