Yes, I picked up a classic controller a couple of weeks ago my seif and they are fantasic but for 2D games (a prime example being fighting games), for 3D/N64 games I find the CGN pad far better and even with 2D games I find mario better to play with the wiimote on it side due to the button lay out and the way SMB plays, Still a fantasic controller though.
I use the classic controller for all SNES and N64 games, but use wiimote for NES. The classic controller is also mandatory for Super Mario World. You can't easily reach the run button to the spin jump button on the gamecube controller.

The Classic Controller is great to be honest. I really couldn't use the Wii remote for Virtual Console games. It's also great for Super Smash Bros Brawl as well.
I only use it for SNES games, sometimes for certian Genesis games; for N64 i use my beloved silver Wavebird. I also have a NES to GC adapter, so i'll use an old school NES pad or the glorious NES Advantage for NES games.
It's so good I'd like to consider using it for Twilight Princess, which I'm currently loving, instead of nunchuk/wiimote combo. Anyone know if this is possible?

No. Games that support the CC have a symbol for it on the back of the box.
