There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Let's see ... play hide-and-seek for a bunch of cartridge games and several systems that may or may not last for much longer ... or have digital copies from 7 systems consolidated in one location? No storage, no complicated maze of wires and connectors in the back of my TV ... yeah, I don't see any upside to the cartridges.

Cartidges will always have some monetary value, digital downloads are worthless after you download them.

Well, like a few other members said here, VC & the original cartridges & CDs have their ups & downs. While the VC doesn't require to have wires all over behind the TV & that the rare games cost much less than the real thing, there's something that bothers me about the VC a lot & it's the chance of some systems not being supported again in the VC for either a long time or maybe even the rest of the VC's lifespan. To enjoy retro gaming to the max, you'll probably have to use both the VC & the original stuff.
Let's use Neo Geo as an example. For starters, the NG section on the VC hasn't been updated since December 2008 & there's only around 20 games released in the section. While there are compilations out there for a cheap price, they also can only take you so far. I know there's also an ESRB rating of "SNK Arcade Classics 0" or something like that, but I'm not sure if there's even an official confirmation of it by SNKP themselves. The last compilation I think SNK released was the Samurai Shodown Anthology back in march of last year. Unfortunately, there's still quite a bit of good NG games that haven't either been released on the VC, either on a compilation or it's actually on a compilation but only in Japan, or even none of those.
I think the value of original vs. VC for most non-rare games will really be decided when we find out if you can transfer games to the next Nintendo console or not. If you can, I'd say VC for the win, especially if you don't have an original system. I will probably still keep my Genesis for gaming, but it's nice to know that if it died, I could download most of my favorite games for it.
The console where it's not as much of an advantage I think is N64, since games were designed with it's unique controller in mind (I would faint with excitement if an N64 classic controller would be a club nintendo reward like the SNES one). I'd probably buy a second one for however much it cost off ebay too. Plus, let's be real, it would be sweet to play Rare's games too (i prefer originals to remakes generally, which is what Microsoft is doing mostly. Plus I like the electronics I buy to work, which rules out Microsoft). I'll probably just keep my wii if games can't be transferred, but I'd really like them to be able to, since I'm hoping it's successor will have a better hard drive and if the VC service continues, I'd want to get the new games on that one.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery

There is, but that compilation won't have any Neo Geo games on it, just older SNK arcade games.
