Topic: Taking it easy on the VC from now on...

Ok, don't take this the wrong way, I LOVE the VC. I thnk it might be one of the best things to come out of the gaming world ever. But it occured to me last week as I bought Wave Race 64 for 4.99 and 3 NES games for a combined total of 6 bucks (Pro Wrestling, IronSword, Solar Jetman) that in reality the VC is kind of a ripoff... I think I've probably spent close to 200 bucks on Wii points since I got my Wii, and I just have to wonder how much those games would have cost at a pawn shop or a used game store (NOT Gamestop). Not to mention they would be perfectly emulated (I'm looking at you C64) and contain the old licenses. Of course I'm not gonna be one of those people who say I will never download another VC game again. The odds of me getting a SMS or a TG16 anytime soon are pretty slim, so I will definately use it for getting those games and other rare games, like imports. But I think that from now on, for the most part, I am just gonna stick to the actual physical games.

yeah I always wonder that. I see mega drives (aus genesis) for sale for like $75 bucks including 5 games but I dunno if it's good value or not. At the moment, I am more than happy to keep purchasing them for the wii, purely because my girlfriend and I are moving out together soon, and she is a very tidy and minimal looks in rooms. I think have 4 or 5 consoles would really bug her, and I'm not the type to unpack and repack consoles every time I want to play them.

I totally see your point though.

That said, where I am most of the good SNES games like Donkey Kong Coutnry, Mario Kart SNES, and Super Mario All Stars seem to retail in 2nd hand stores for $40aus... so I think it's a great deal with the VC...

That certainly sounds like a smart idea if you already own the console. That's why I have very few N64 VC games, and chances are I'll never own much more than that, since It's much easier and cheaper to buy them online or at a pawn shop.

Well, some games are much cheaper on VC, especially the rarer ones.

The prices of fair enough, just because you can find the games much cheaper at pawn shops doesn't make them overpriced.

Then the VC games are always available, unlike on the older systems where availability of good games is never certain.

LzWinky

The problem there is whether or not those actual systems will last. Nintendo no longer supports the NES but can repair your Wii if something happened to it.

Just because it's cheaper to buy the physical games does not necessarily make it better

I think it's much better to buy the game. Games usually feel best on the system they're made for and even if your system dies there will still probably be copies, for example the retro duo. Not only that but you don't have to worry about copyright problems or have the tedious wait for a game to finally be released. Plus what if later on in your wii's life it breaks beyond repair? And let's say there is no wii shopping channel because it's out dated, If a snes breaks you still have the cartridge.

There are definately pros and cons to it. My main point was that I'm not going to buy exclusively from the VC like I have been.

I suppose for some games it's better on the VC and others on the actual cartriages

Thanks Link-Hero but I am well informed about which games are rare and which aren't, and for the super expensive rare games I will stick to the VC. I do have Super Mario RPG on the VC. Like I said earlier, there are pros and cons to both sides. Sure, the VC games are pretty much guaranteed to work, but maybe the license is stripped from it or it is emulated poorly. Then again, if you only buy cartriges, maybe they won't work or the battery has died in them. You just have to know when it is better to buy the actual game or when it is better to buy the VC version I suppose.

I'm starting to think of the same way. Up until a week ago, I put all my hopes and faith on the Virtual Console, but that has changed. The main reason why I'm not longer relying solely on the Virtual Console is due to the terrible support for the Nintendo 64, my all-time favorite console, I am so ****** off with it's support on the Virtual Console that I made up my mind that I will be getting an Nintendo 64 again and buy games for that system, because unlike for other system where you can at least hope for the games you want, most Nintendo 64 games will most likely never see the light and day of the Virtual Console and that to me is pretty sad.

That doesn't mean I'm jumping ships entirely. I will still use the service when I have money and I remain an full Virtual Console supporter, this means that I'm starting to lose interest on the service.

I wish I could take it easy, but VC is like crack to me.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

RowdyRodimus

I'll keep buying both. I buy the carts to collect and the VC to play.

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.

MetalMario

I'd rather have the carts, but the VC is so accessible.

Also PhoenixSage, I like that avatar.

I need to make it blink though. All the cool kids are doing that now.

I like the fact that I don't have to go upstairs, find the right cables, unplug the right cables from my GCN, scour through my collection for games, go behind my TV, plug in the 3-pronged cable, and adjust the audio just to play Mario Kart 64. With the Wii, all I have to do is plug in a GCN controller, select it from my Wii menu, and enjoy

TwilightV

I'm exactly 40 games away from having every Nintendo published game on the VC (including the Lolo games from HAL). My quest for total domination continues...

I want access to the best versions of all good old games, so the Wii is one good library.. for all kinds of games.
I like how such a big range of different console games are all accessible online via one console.
At the end of the day I think it's great to have all your favourite games on one machine.
The Virtual Console is still in it's early years and the future holds countless ways to make it bigger and richer with new content every week.
I think it's great and I don't buy old cartridges. Nintendo has all the data to all games ever produced for one of their systems stored in their basements. They could bring out any game anytime, just needing to contact the old publishers for rights and co-operation.
