I am looking forward to reading NP's review, as they are nearly always of good quality. I'm sure they have good reasons for their score just short of perfection. But I still can't wait for the extended weekend and hours of Galaxy 2.
@MetalMario NP is a lot tougher in reviews, there are only 2 games to ever get a 10. Metroid Prime 3 and Brawl.
That's not true. They've given lots of games 10's. You've got to remember that they've been around since Super Mario Bros. 2 came out. Metroid Prime 3 and Brawl are the last two games they gave a 10 to, however. Come to think of it, they didn't even give the first Galaxy a 10.

To me, Galaxy 2 feels like the first 3D Mario game that truly captures the spirit of Mario's 2D adventures.
Absolutely agree with that. Before this, I always liked the 2D games better. But now? Well, the 2D games are obviously still better as a whole, but I'm pretty sure this is my favorite Mario game ever, replacing my previous favorite, Super Mario World.
"Oooh, yes I said it! I said it! I said it 'cause I caaan!" My Backloggery
@Kid_A Name some. In their whole history there are NO other 10s
Ugh...okay. Wind Waker: 10 Super Mario Sunshine: 10 Metroid Prime: 10 Metroid Fusion: 10 Don't believe me? Check Metacritic. Is that enough or should I keep going?

I've always loved both the 2D and 3D, but they've always been such entirely different beasts. Now, I feel like Nintendo has finally struck that perfect chord.

@Kid_A I think those review scores were from when NP did 5 out of 5 ratings. AT least I think so.
In that case you might be right. I just thought he meant perfect scores in general. If that is indeed the case, his argument was somewhat dubious to begin with, seeing as the new rating system has only been around for two or three years at the most.

hey can someone please explain what the 'comet coins' are...i heard they offer immense challenge but i dont really understand them.
Comet Coins are hidden coins that you can find within each Galaxy. Once you find them, it will allow a "comet" to orbit the Galaxy--this "comet" is basically another word for "special challenges". Some comets present "purple coin challenges" where you have to find 100 Purple Coins in a level within a given amount of time (although sometimes there isn't a time limit). Some comets challenge you to complete a level in a certain amount of time, some make you do a portion of a level while being chased by weird and ever multiplying evil "Shadow Mario Clones", and the list goes on and on.

I can understand people liking the game, but I fail to see how it captures the essence of the 2D games. It's still Galaxy plus Yoshi and a map, to simplify quite a bit.
To be more literally like the 2D games, Yoshi would have to be treated as more than a power-up, the power-ups would have to be treated as power-ups rather than puzzle pieces, game over would have to mean something, the gimmicky levels would need to go (i.e. riding a marble), alternating co-op play would have to be recognized, and levels would need to be linear get-to-the-finish rather than star-searching free romps.
There are levels here and there that recognize the 2D tradition, but no more so than past 3D Marios: 64 with the Bowser levels, Sunshine with Fluddless levels (the best 3D Mario levels to this day), and the single-star galaxies in the two Wii games all hark back to old days for me.
This may be the best 3D Mario (I prefer 64 myself), but it is still just working with the formula set down by 64 and tossing in nostalgic nods to the old games while subverting these elements to the new game's purposes.

That's why I said 10s and not perfect. My statement stands as true. And what do you mean his?!
Without a doubt, but that's hardly the only distinguishing factor of the traditional Mario games, if that's what you're even responding to... I can't tell.

Because I was talking to Xkhaoz about you. So I referred to you as "him". This argument has just gotten way out of hand hasn't it

Just my two unrequested cents.
I actually did request your cents And that's why I said it captures the "spirit" of the 2D games. The brilliant thing about this game is that it manages to seamlessly integrate the linearity and, you know, actual platforming of the 2D games with bold new concepts that differentiate it from everything before it. There are some Mario 64-like exploration levels, but even those seem to weave in some side-scrolling segments. The 2D and 3D Mario games have always been and always will be entirely different beasts, but this one seems to cultivate the best of both worlds into one incredible experience.
