You see, I love mario and Zelda but when they are put up against a game like Halo Reach or KillZone 3... Well they get murdered. Mainly because these games give you sooo much more freedom, the ragdoll physics and very fun and make for some hilarious moments, and the maps are just HUGE! BUT if Nintendo were to spice up Mario with some online co-op and voice chat it would be a blast. But the main thing is they don't compare. Metroid does, but it gets murdered horribly too. On the fun factor I would give it to Halo and killzone, because of these memorable moments and huge maps. It's simply more fun. Most people who think the games are generic simply HAVE NOT played them. I supported the Wii until I played a 360/PS3 for my first time.
How can you compare a FPS with Mario and Zelda games? The only game you mentioned that you could even begin to compare to Killzone or Halo is Metroid, and I'm guessing you have never played any of the Metroid Prime games as the world you can explore in that game is much larger than probably all the multiplayer maps combined in Halo or Killzone. The world in the campaign modes might be comarable in size to one in a Metroid Prime game, but even still the games are not that similar, as Metroid Prime is more of an adventure game rather than a typical FPS.
If you enjoy the PS3 and 360 more than the Wii, than that is great. But please, next time find a better comparison than Halo to Mario.
You are seriously wrong there, I am 14 and have been a fan of Nintendo ever since the N64. Also 13+ are not children, in case you didn't know. I love my DS and HATE my Wii because the Wii simply has a MAJORITY not minority but a majority of bad games. The Wii mostly has games directed at children or at soccer moms. The games simply just aren't fun. The Wii is the only current gen system I have yet I enjoy my Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube MUCH more than any Wii game. The Wii is just a failure in the eyes of me and MANY MANY other fans. If you were a true Nintendo fan you would see that the WIi is a huge flop and DOES NOT have that zest that the other Nintendo consoles have, mainly because the majority of the games are simply horrible. Super Mario Galaxy is fantastic and so is Zelda, but Wii Party, Wii Sports, and Wii Music are HORRIBLE! I have YET to see a Wii game that can compete with the likes of Halo Reach, and no don't try to give me the same old Zelda and Mario because they don't compare. Metroid Prime could have compared if they had put in online play, but they didn't. The old school approach just doesn't work anymore, it's boring and washed out. Without online play the game simply gets lonely and boring once your stuck on a part or have completed the game. Kids today like the Wii, teenagers do not like the Wii.
1. Teenagers are still kids until then turn 18. 2. If you judge a good game as at least a 65 on Metacritic, you are correct that only a minority of Wii games are good (42%) and that the other two consoles (PS3 68%, X360 62%) have a higher success rate. However, your conclusion that the Wii is a huge flop is very far from the truth. There's still 42% or 397 good Wii games out there, and you can easily avoid the bad ones if you read some reviews. Anyone can find several Wii games that appeal to them. That does not equate to a flop. 3. Wii Sports is a very good game for both casual and hardcore players. Almost (if not all) everyone else here will tell you the same. Have you even given it a decent try? 4. You can't directly compare games in different genres like that, and indirectly, Mario and Zelda have just as much quality in their genres as any Halo game does in the FPS genre. Try expanding your horizons from your gory slaughter-fests, which I don't think a 14-year-old should be playing, anyway. By the way, the FPS controls on the Wii blow away anything that can be done with dual-analog controls. Judging from this major control advantage and online impressions, the upcoming Goldeneye remake and Conduit 2 should both directly surpass (in quality) the Halo series, anyway. 5. Not every game needs or is suited to online or any kind of multiplayer. The style, gameplay, and story of the Metroid and Zelda series do not suit it well for any kind of multiplayer, as the multiplayer in Metroid Prime 2 proved. Online multiplayer does not make any kind of logical sense for a platformer like Mario. Besides, when you can arrange it, local multiplayer is better than online multiplayer, anyway. Also, there are plenty of ways to extend replay value even without multiplayer. Some games are just so much fun to play through that you'll occassionally play the whole game (or parts of it) through again. Others, the Metroid series being a huge example, extend replay value through hidden items and/or collectables. 6. Your ignorance of points 1-5 clearly shows that you just one of those ignorant teens mentioned throughout this thread.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
I like how you talk about being a "true Nintendo fan" (whatever that means) and then proceed to bash Nintendo's latest console. I guess I'm a "false Nintendo fan". I'd put that in my signature if I actually cared.
I also like how you completely ignore the excellent third party releases on the Wii - only mentioning Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and the "Wii X" games. I'm really happy with my Wii and most of my games aren't from Nintendo. And people wonder why third party games sell poorly on the Wii.
P.S. Excellent job derailing the topic and posting the same thing twice without being noticed.
I hate to say this, but everyone that is kid/teen bashing might want to look back into that dark and awkward time when they (and me, i'm 24) were an adolescent. We were just as immature as the kids are today. we had the same lust for newer and better technology and newer things (in general) that surpassed our fathers (or mothers for you ladies out there). Its like no one has read 'lord of the flies' before .....
Immature I may have been, but I would never have said Sega sucks just because the Saturn and the Dreamcast flopped. To this day I'm a huge fan of Sega for what it was back when I was a child and a teenager. When I had friends over, I got them to try out some of my Dreamcast games and made converts of them.
My concern is that eventually Nintendo will be shunned by the current generation of gamers who see the WII as a toy and not a serious gaming machine, largely due to ignorance and misconceptions about their software. Nintendo may one day go the same way as SEGA........
Sega died because of internal problems. The Dreamcast was treated as a gamer's holy grail back in its day, yet it still failed. Trust me, Nintendo's not going anywhere, not anytime soon, and not for those reasons. Ninty may make some stupid decisions at times, but they're far from being mismanaged.
Nintendo have survived since the late 19th century, when they started off making hanafuda playing cards (they still do). The sun will not set on Nintendo. But that doesn't mean that they will always remain the same. The reason for their imense longevity is their adaptiveness to different entertainment markets: playing cards, traditional toys, electronic toys, videogames. (Their quite-recently retired boss actually hated videogames but got into it as he was persuaded it was a good business opportunity. He continued to hate them even when they made him and his company extremely rich.) So, I think Nintendo will survive. But that's no guarantee that they'll survive necessarily by making videogames and consoles. If bottom falls out of the market, which may happen although it seems unlikely right now, they'll do something else and probably be successful at it. For what it's worth, that's what I think.
What worries me is that no one questioned this "dom77" and his/ her status as a teacher.
I worry for the next generation of young adults if that is being passed off as acceptable grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
More on topic though - Nintendo's not going anywhere. Even if it eventually pisses off its entire core userbase (I consider this likely in the longer term), then still going to have the really young generation and the very casual audience to fall back on.
The only point I have a real concern with Nintendo with is its online policy, which stinks, and there's no indication that it's going to be fixed. But that said, the very young and very casual gamers aren't going to care about that. I care about it as a more core gamer, and yes, it's driving me to Sony.
@WaltzElf He's probably a science or math teacher. I notice they tend to have poor commands of the English language.
And everyone's hoping Nintendo will improve its online policy. What they did with the Wii and DS back in the mid 00s would be unacceptable today. IIRC someone at Nintendo announced they were looking at something like Amazon's Whispernet for the Kindle. Here's hoping it'll be available worldwide instead of per country.
I hate to say this, but... We were just as immature as the kids are today.
the thought crossed my mind but i think there are a lot of differences today. for one, this partisan mentaility of "only my system is good" is really sad. nintendo and sega went at it, but i had both their consoles and so did all my friends. maybe other people's memories are different, but for me it would have been odd for a kid to swear by one system and arrogantly rag all over the other, even refusing to play it's games.
i like reading bits of psychology on games when i see them and it seems like people are personally identifying themselves with systems like never before. it's more what your system says about you, not how fun it is to play, and a "weak kid" system isn't as cool as a sleek HD powerhouse.
then you've got utterly cheap content on the HD systems; sex and violence aren't anything new (well, violence anyway) but the extent that a game can be based on them has changed. i'm always stunned by how ineffective the ratings system is; i find it odd to see my 11 year old nephew dismembering people and unlocking playboy centerfolds in games. it's not an isolated incident of parental irresponsibility either, every kid seems to have these games. they're desensitized to the point where any game that doesn't deliver a near-pornographic level of violence seems lame.
it's a very bad thing that this generation doesn't know what makes a good game, but i don't think it's any threat to nintendo. they have the advantage of truly great titles with lasting appeal, while the HD systems just have decent games that get old fast. i find it hard to imagine anyone today will grow up and look back fondly on the current call of duty when they've already forgotten the last installment. it'll happen again 5 months later when activision cranks another one out.
besides, can you imagine what the competition would be like without nintendo? for one, sony and microsoft would go through dozens of console iterations with the exact same controller.

Maybe you're too young to remember the Commodore 64 versus ZX Spectrum playgrounds fights of the 1980s. They were brutal - haha! Nothing has changed.
As a 15 year old, I think that we were all just as immature, but in different ways. Everyone I knew had a "Games are games" mentality and bought whatever systems they could afford, and that was just how it worked. People had 64s, Dreamcasts, PSOnes, PS2s, Cubes, etc. and nobody really cared about it. Now kids argue about which system is better and insult each other over what system they have. Pretty sad. And the kids I knew have changed as well. The ones I know are less into it than younger kids, but they still have the "My console is better than yours" mentality.
I Hate it when people call Nintendo, (as i love Nintendo) Put It this way what franchises have microsoft or sony created hey, Nintendo have created Mario (all mario series) , Pokemon, Zelda, StarFox, Kirby, Donkey Kong, EarthBound, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Nitendogs, Metroid, The Wii Series, F-Zero, Brain Age, Fire Emble, Golden Sun, Pikmin, Puzzle Leauge Games and Obviously Last But Definatley Not Least Super Smash Bros. You play a game cause you like it not because of fantastic graphics.

Sorry Dickens You don't need to worry about my (fully qualified) status as a teacher and my two University degrees (English and History). Why make totally uninformed judgements from the other side of the world? My post was not perfect but there were no spelling errors. I deemed it appropriate for the audience and purpose. Use of non-standard English is fine in the correct context ie forums. The previous 60 people found it perfectly legible.

You said it, and please everyone read the post that these dude have written, games are games, who cares on wich console they are?
Dude. Does no one remember the Nintendo VS Sega wars? "Genesis does what Nintendon't"
This brand of console bashing has been around at least since I was a tyke. kid who got an SNES for Christmas: Mario is way cooler than Sonic! Nintendo is cooler! kid who got a Genesis for Christmas: Na-ah. Genesis is cooler. My Mortal Kombat has the blood code!
I remember arguing with kids at my school, sticking up for my N64. Defending the quality of games like Ocarina of Time, while getting ridiculed for owning the system that still used cartridges and couldn't play CGI cutscenes. I was always a diehard Nintendo fan, but there was definitely a time in my early adolescence when I was jealous of the seemingly more adult games that my friends were playing on their Playstations. They had Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil, and I felt a bit trumped. So I had my revolt. I sold leveled up Pokemon behind the school library, made some cash, and bought a used PS from a friend. It wasn't until I finally played through FF7 and all the games I was felt SO DEPRIVED of, that I returned to my Nintendo console with a newfound feeling of appreciation. It makes perfect sense to me that a youngster would be more in awe of games that appeal to his desire to grow up. I'm sure as soon as the "holy $! I'm grown up" epiphany hits, he'll be running back to his old Ninty consoles to relive the glory of his childhood. I know I did.
I not gonna read, I'm just gonna say... "NEVER!!!"
now I'll read it
edit: @dom77: dude, I feel your pain, I have the same gaming-based-conversations with your 'average folk' and it's just as bad. One in ten, I'd say, know Nintendo and appreciate true gaming and retro shiz (i hug them usually, or go to, before they back off), but the rest... CoD/FIFA and the like, bleh. That one in ten tho', will always be there, just share your gaming, educate, do your bit, omg I'm a fanboy. xD But not a freaky one, mmkay.
