i just read that a few minutes ago too lol

anyway i suggest a sequel only with new characters (and maybe a customizable Little Mac?)

Adam

The series certainly needs something new other than pretty graphics.

Having now read it, the author of that article seems to be taking a pretty enormous leap to his conclusions, based on the actual quoted material.

the article says, "If the team were to create a sequel, Yeeloy said the game will bear no resemblance to the series' traditional gameplay mechanics that we've come to know and love."

Got that? No resemblance whatsoever. And to back it up, we get this quote:

"The next Punch-Out!! would be different. Hopefully fans appreciate what we've done and that Punch-Out!! gathers strength in the marketplace as well as in pop culture. We've seen great online videos and fan content already. When the current title has gathered its new fanbase I would personally love to take the IP and the mechanic and give it a little twist."

A little twist to the familiar / something totally unrecognizable. Potato / potahto. Let's call the whole thing off.

Maybe in the next game your last fight will be against Bowser.

Motion controls are all right, but Wii Sports already did them just as well if not better. I didn't understand why I had to dodge with the control stick in Punch Out. Oh well.

I don't know what additional modes you mean, but they seemed to be the same, unless there's something I didn't unlock (didn't finish the game). The multiplayer option (options?) was rather boring, and not as good as Wii Sports.

The rest are really minor and uninteresting additions. I really don't need a game to pat me on the back because I "achieved" something... a good game is a reward in itself.

I'd personally prefer the actual game play become more intricate rather than having all these little frills.

See, I'm of the opinion that in cases like this (and Tetris, and Pac-Man as other comparison points) more intricate gameplay only dilutes the experience. I think Punch-Out has a perfect formula already.

That's not to say that games can't be reinvented successfully, obviously. Mario, Zelda, Metroid...and plenty of others...but those games seemed to be more about possibility than anything else. It was all a question of what you'd see next, where you'd be taken, what special weapons or obstacles you'd find. So evolution was sort of built into those titles from the start, however passively.

In a puzzle-based rhythm-like game of reflex and pattern recognition, I don't think meddling with the central concept will do it any favors. Sometimes the best update is a respectful update. Bubble Bobble into Bubble Bobble Plus, for instance. Or Mega Man into Mega Man 9, as opposed to Mega Man 3D Whatever the Heck Bullcrap Adventure.

I think the next Punch-Out!! should have a 2-on-2 mode where you and a friend can fight the computer characters together.
(Of course when you fight King Hippo, that would be 2-on-5. )

Bubble Bobble and Mega Man are already much more complicated though. There is much more you can do with level design and (in MM's case) power-ups, etc. Punch-Out you can basically just add new fighters if you don't touch the formula. And really, I don't see why there'd be any need for more of the same after three well received installments. After a certain point, there are only so many ways you can dodge left, right, and down.

I don't see how anyone could complain about a quote like this: "Cooperative, competitive multiplayer support or create-a-boss mode would be places to start but we'd need to come up with a new 'hook' like the motion controllers gave us in this iteration." Seriously, a create-a-boss mode would be the perfect thing to add, and I'd love to know what he has in mind for co-op. I can't imagine how that would work.

The team has already proven they know how to do a traditional Punch Out, so I think they can be trusted to evolve a series further.

Oh I agree with you entirely. I'm not personally lobbying for a sequel, and I wouldn't be in any rush to buy it if that's what it was. But every generation or so, it's a decent and resiliant enough concept to dig out and dust off and give a nice facelift to. I'd like to see Punch-Out continue for years, but I definitely don't think we need more than one per console.

As far as Create-A-Boss and stuff like that goes, yeah, that's fine...but I don't think that'd get me to buy a sequel. I can see the appeal for people who didn't buy this past one, but as an upgrade...I'm not sure it interests me.

That's more a personal thing, though. I used to love games that let you create your own content. Now I just don't have the time or interest to invest in things like that.

I wish Nintendo would make a Wii Sports boxing games using two Wiimotes with WiiMotion Plus. That could be awesome! Gold's Gym Cardio Workout uses 2 Wiimotes, and it works pretty well, with WiiMotionPlus, it would be even better.

I'm guessing the gameplay will be more like Super-Punch Out!!

So many good games, so little money to spend.
