Well, Super Smash Bros. Brawl isn't really rated that high so I won't call it overrated...

Brawl is certainly the most overrated game on the Wii, which is why I traded it in today at (for a nearly 50% return rate, I was stunned). I don't normally do this with games I truly love, because Brawl is not such a game. It was supposed to be such a big upgrade from Melee: more characters, better balancing, cooler items, cooler moves, etc etc. What we got, however, was a nicely polished party game, and not the fighter that Melee was. They added in too many random elements (i.e. Tripping), a lot of instant kill items, for some reason, along with Sonic and Snake. I'm not saying it's a terrible game because it's not and can be very fun, but it IS a terrible fighter. Melee is clearly superior, at least in that regard if nothing else.

I agree with you on many of these points (especially with the whole better balancing aspect and tripping), and I also feel that SSBB is the most overrated game for the Wii that I have played. If you want to play the game competitively in the sense of playing opponents who are of equal skill or better and actually getting at the fighting mechanics portion of the game, SSBB lost a whole lot of intricacies that Melee had. Subspace Emissary, and I don't care how people respond to this comment, was a piece of trash. It was so repetitive and uninspired. For a campaign of its length it had few enemy types (not to mention even fewer enemies from Nintendo games), and the platforming was extremely mediocre (for Nintendo, that's poorest of poor). I was so surprised that Nintendo, one of the kings of platformers, could allow for such a thing to be included in one of their own big name games. The story was also penned by the same guy who wrote the story for FF7, which explains why the storyline makes no sense.

After this stuff, it comes down more to personal preference for me. I don't prefer the "make it possible for everyone to win" design that's used in SSBB by default. It works for stuff that by nature can revolve more around chance like Mario Party, for example, but in fighting games I like my skill level to determine how well I do more often than not. It makes winning more rewarding, and if you get to put your axe to the grindstone with human players especially, then you have more potential for getting good. As you might be able to tell, I'm more of an enthusiast with other fighting games (doesn't mean I'm great at them though).

Anyway, I'm done with my rant. I've been up a long time today, and I'm very very tired, so if something I typed isn't coherent or is too strongly worded, I apologize. I'll check back here in the morning.

I could go on a rant trying to combat everything you just said, but I won't.
I would like to ask though, how nintendo added the "make it possible for everyone to win." I find the better person always wins.

In Mario Kart Wii, it's possible for anyone to win. I can't stand that....

If your skill level doesn't make a difference in Brawl, you're not very skilled. I recommend watching the Tutorial videos on the Nintendo channel; they're a little slow and dry, but they do a good job of pointing out various mechanics and how to use them physically and strategically in games.

It doesn't have a high bar for entry, but it definitely has depth.

This is sort of a combo reply. There is a little depth to the mechanics for fighting in Brawl, but there aren't as many, as say, SSBM. The nature of the game by default is to allow players of any skill level (albeit, unless the players don't understand what buttons do what) to have a pretty decent shot at winning. I may check out some of those tutorials, but I have seen the game loaded with many more intricacies with Brawl+ codes installed.

I think that when Melee came out, a whole slew of new expectations about how SSB games should play presented themselves to many players, and Brawl is a huge disappointment in that regard. Brawl, I feel, represents an identity crisis in the series in terms of gameplay. It lies in between the original Smash in terms of just being a party fighter and Melee, which is more towards the competitive end of the spectrum in the sense that I mentioned in my previous post.

This is not to brag because I know I'd get my butt kicked at tournaments, but even with items turned on, I beat my friends in almost every single match. It's certainly a game of skill and depth, and not everyone has a chance of winning if you know what you're doing.

None of the games were designed to be "competitive." Just because some people with too much time on their hands learned how to wave dash across the screen doesn't mean Melee is any less of a party game than the original was. And on the other hand, I know of a pretty large group who still play the 64 game pretty competitively. The series can be enjoyed in either setting.

SSBB became overrated because they seriously let every little secret that went into the game out of the bag long before the game actually came out here in America, and the things it promised fell short of the mark. Custom created levels and online play sounded huge, but both had serious issues and were extremely shallow in the end. Plus, thanks to the Smash Bros Dojo, almost all of the new characters in the game were revealed from a very early point. When you finally got the game, you had to earn what you already knew you were getting. It lacked the mysticism of Melee, the shock of unlocking something that you never would have guessed even existed. I love the game, and still have a blast playing it, but after all the hype it was given, it truly did let a lot of people down. Therefore, Super Smash Bros Brawl is labelled "overrated." Or over-hyped. Your choice.

Adam

He revealed characters in advance for Melee, too, from what I heard. I didn't know about it at the time, myself, so I don't know how to confirm it.

And no one made you check the Dojo everyday. Anyone who demands "mysticism" should have practiced the art of self-restraint.

Whether it's overrated or overhyped, I don't know or care -- way too subjective and pointless to determine -- but just saying those aren't exactly good reasons when it is completely up to the individual to learn such things in advance or not.

I think Twilight Princess takes the cake here. It had too much to live up to and having a GCN port as a launch title is really insulting. We better get a new Zelda Wii announcement at E3.

@CorusFace

About SSBB... I know, they ruined all the surprises before it hit shelves! WTF!?! Still, the game has so many unlockables that every time I put it in I STILL unlock another song or trophy. Still, like Adam said... No one was forcing you to check the Dojo. In fact, after they started revealing characters like Lucas, I stopped checking it myself.

Brawl isn't really my thing, but I can't bring myself to call it overrated. It's online may not be without flaws, but Brawl's local multiplayer has become how I remember Goldeneye 10 years or so back, at parties or friends pads, Brawl and Kart are almost always the games being played. Plus it has a huuuuge faithful audience and, with all its features, characters, trophies, yadayada, its replay value is almost absurd, I never even came close to getting all the trophies and whatsits.

Twilight Princess. Easily the most ovverrated Wii game, in my opinion. It's boring, it looks dull (so much brown...) and the best item (the spinner) was hardly ever used. I didn't find the story interesting at all, and I only found it fun during the final boss(es), and that's probably due to knowing the game was almost over.

The only thing I can really say I liked about the game was the music, which has been consistently good throughout the series, so I can't really say it stands out.

Easily the worst Zelda, overall.

Obviously you've never played the CDi ones. I do agree TP isn't the best in the series, but it's by no means a bad game. It had great graphics, a good story, awesome weapons, massive bosses and an epic expanse of land to explore. It may be overrated, but it is not bad.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

It wasn't a matter of Dojo revealing characters alone, and having to restrain yourself. It just showed what was new and then it was there from the start. And yet you still had to work for Ness or Captain Falcon, something that was already almost a given.... They should have made more of the new characters, say Wario or Captain Olimar, secret characters that you had to earn - characters that were a question mark on the site. That, or add a bunch of new surprises in addition to those newer characters that they had revealed early on.

I have to say, critic wise, Madworld is the most overrated. If you strip away the unique aesthetic, your left with a brawler more generic than the average lisenced game. Heck, The Warriors had more depth. The real dealbreaker for me was the controls. Even Deadly Creatures had some form of auto-lock. If you didn't hold the lock-on button, you'd be punching air more often than not just 'cause the enemy moved slightly to the left or right. Lastly, what was the deal with the sexual content? I'm all for little innuendos but the game had no subtlety about and it didn't fit with the rest of the over-the-top gameplay. It was just kinda...there. That's the end of my rant on MW. Hopefully, a good M-rated game will sale next time but that wasn't it.

Wildly overrated:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Expanded Remix (Twilight Princess): Absolutely nothing new whatsoever. I liked this game better when it was the Wind Waker, and I liked that game better when it was Ocarina of Time!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Unlike Melee, which I've played to death, I cannot get into this one. It just seems so random that you get no sense of victory when you win. It just feels like sheer dumb luck. It's also horribly broken.

Mildly overrated:
Super Mario Galaxy: Please don't kill me on this. I love SMG, but a lot of people think its the greatest Mario ever, and I don't agree with that. SMW will always be my favorite.
Punch-Out!!: Another game I really like, but seems to be getting way too much love. More new characters and expanded multiplayer would have made it a classic, but as it stands, it feels a lot like the original Punch-Out!! with imporved graphics.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

I'm sorry, but how in the world is Wind Waker anything like either of those? Sure the main gameplay is the same, but so is every game in every series, or even in most genres. Sure things will be different throughout each one, but the core gameplay is always the same.

My god, you guys really seem to hate Twilight Princess and SSBB, don't you?

I, however, am sticking up for both games, because they are NOT overrated and among the best games on the Wii. Just because Twilight Princess isn't as fresh as OoT does not mean it sucks. Have you played Phantom Hourglass (I know it says overrated Wii games, but still...)? THAT was very unimpressive, and to me, it was pretty frustrating in some parts. Except for the CDi ones (which you've obviously never heard of if you claim that TP is the worst), PH is the worst Zelda game. Twilight Princess had a fantastic, gripping story, complete with gameplay that held up incredibly well (though similar to previous Zeldas), a phenomenal soundtrack, very fun boss battles, and gorgeous graphics (which could have been better given that some of the environments looked colorless).

And as for Brawl. You've obviously never played it on multiplayer if SSBB is overrated. Brawl + multiplayer (online or local) = nonstop fun. It is every bit as good a fighting game as Melee was, and had better features (Stage Builder is my dream come true, but the Coin Launcher? Spare me, please), better characters (and character balance), and better items (The Smash ball really makes the outcome unpredictable). If you're complaining because it didn't deliver its promises, then it's your fault for letting hype get the better of you.

Given that most people on the internet think you're an idiot if you don't like the exact same things they like, I'm sure this post will be followed by a train of flaming. You can verbally rip me to shreds for having different taste than you if you feel like it. I do not care.
