Yeah, really disappointed. What are they thinking, having the free versions on other consoles have online play, and the paid version have local only? It makes no sense at all.

And while net play is a "bonus", it also makes the game much more desirable for the majority of people. I don't have many friends nearby who I can play with, which is why I love games like MH3 which allow me to play with people around the world. I also don't have to invite friends around just to play with them - it's convenient if we can just go home and game in the evening online.

It would have been like releasing Street Fighter 4 to home consoles with local play only. The value of the game would be severely diminished without net play.

Obviously EA doesn't want the Wii version to sell. Nice business sense you have there, EA - because the ones that will be played will net you a grand total of $0.

Everywhere online I read "no online, no buy" for this game. Get a clue, EA.

I wish the original NBA Jam was on the VC. Oh well, without online gaming i will probably pretty much get Hoopworld instead, for like 1/3 of the price.

Wii owners got screwed over by EA. They just lost a sale.

EA is famous for screwing over customers, but as long as they keep making the big bucks, why should they care?
Plus they know that there is a fan base for this franchise that is dying to play a new version of this game, so they know the game will sell on Wii.

An arcade style game like this really should have online play so its a real shame the wii version won't have it. It can be hard to see an arcade style game like this as worth full price without online play. Local multiplayer is always fun and is preferred to online play but many people don't have a chance to play local multiplayer all that often. Online always lets you have an opponent and gives you a reason to keep playing and getting better at a game.

It shows how EA sees the wii when its a bonus for the hd consoles yet still has online, yet for the wii its a major standalone game yet doesn't have online. Though to be fair nintendo themselves haven't exactly pushed online features much and have a pretty crappy online system in place. Still, some companies like capcom have tried to do the best they can with that system or work around it.

So theres no online play whatever. Just invite some friends over and play a game. What the heck do you people think we did before there was online play? I just dont understand the hype with online play nowadays.

^ Agreed. I use to play NBA Jam with 3 other friends! We managed to do it from the same room. The only problem is you have to go outside to get to your friends house.

This is actually why I like the Wii because they actually have games that don't only rely on online for the multiplayer.

I used to play console games with friends all the time, during my school years. Now almost all of my friends live in different countries or regions from me. I wish I could still play Power Stone 2 with them, but it's a bit much to ask them to buy a return air ticket just so we can get on the Dreamcast for a bit...

Maybe I'm a special case - most people and their friends don't move around that often or that far - but if I only had local multiplayer games now I'd be a pretty lonely gamer. :/ In fact most of my console purchases these days are single player games, just because of this.

And hey, the technology is now widely available to connect people from afar. I don't see why we should have to use sticks and flints to cook food when we have stoves around nowadays. I know that's a bit of an extreme analogy because local multiplay is still preferable, but online multiplay shouldn't be shunned just because, well... EA never justified leaving it out, did they? So for no reason, apparently. Maybe lazy programmers, or lack of faith in the Wii.

I agree with HolyMackerel. I don't have the same problems, but leaving out online play was just lazy in this day and age, IMO. No one said it has to be Xbox Live-caliber. It just needs to be decent and functioning. And putting in the version that comes free with a purchase of an entire other game but not in the standalone $50 version just shows me they don't care about the Wii. And then, when the game doesn't sell, they will whine, "Hardcore games don't sell on Wii!!!! WAAAHHHH WE WILL NEVER MAKE GAME FOR WII AGAIN!!!"

The people i know that play wii don´t live next door. Its dumb to not put an online feature in a full retail arcade SPORT game in 2010!

@SuperMarioFan96 Actually you bring up an interesting point. They must have developed NBA Jam originally as a Wii exclusive because it was low cost, low risk and fit within the "casual, accessible, fun" style of gaming that the Wii lends itself to.

So why the sudden change to XBLA and PSN, and then start effectively removing functionality from the original game? Perhaps they were surprised by the positive response online to the idea of an NBA Jam sequel, so they wanted to expand their audience to the "core" consoles. (Probably because of many "core" gamers whining that it wasn't being released on a console they owned.)

If that's true then it goes to show how many people love and remember the original NBA Jams.

For many the older you get the harder it is to consistently get a bunch of friends in the same room to play video games. We'd all agree that local mutliplayer with friends is the best way to play but its all about having options. Having both local and online multiplayer is the best way to go and gives you a way to play with others no matter what. Having such an option removed from the version you would get is never a good thing. Some low budget wiiware games have managed to include online so I don't think its much to expect a major game studio to include it for a full fledged retail title.

It would seems that they just didn't consider it worth it to add online to wii or that it wasn't cost effective.

very silly. I really don't care about this game much nor about the online but they really killed their sales. EA made all the possible mistakes here.. quite a feat.

NBA Jam is supposed to only be available (on PS360) with the purchase of NBA Elite 2011, which would also delay Jam on PS360. ALTHOUGH:

Now, this could just mean the Elite will be out by the end of the year after all but...... who knows? Either way.... we get it first!

If this game doesn't have awesome celebrity bonus characters, I'm not buying it. I really want Bill Murray to dunk all over Obama.

From Peter Moore's blog:

-NBA JAM will launch on the Wii, as scheduled, on October 5. NBA JAM won recognition this summer as the best sports game at E3 and it’s a blast to play. In addition to the Wii version, we’re going to ship NBA JAM as a standalone product on the Xbox360 and PS3 in time for the holidays. Watch for more news soon on the exact timing of that release.

So, uh, yeah. Might want to wait on that Wii version purchase?

Sigh Figures. Either it will be a downloadable version, or it will be retail with all the features of the Wii version AND online play (well that's my guess anyway....). Way to go EA.
