the voices are all americanized, but they are still pretty fun. the game itself is a blast, and the varying degrees of difficulty will keep you busy for a long time.
Review should be finished today. I'd have finished it already if I hadn't spent so much time playing the game, which should be a bit of a hint as to where I'm leaning.
Normally I don't read their reviews at all, but this takes the cake: 30min. of play Daemon? REALLY? What is he the lord god-king of Mr. Driller players? It's an 800 point WiiWare title that has many times the gameplay of the arcade game, I really don't know what else he expected, but my impression is that he actually did play it for 30min. before writing the review. Someone needs to get their ass to a Job Centre and find new employment methinks!
Well at least he admitted that he didn't play the game this time! Seriously, Hatfield must have some very compromising pictures of IGN's upper-level management, it's the only way to explain why his ass wasn't fired LONG ago.
BTW this is the first Mr Driller game I've played, and I have to say it's very challenging, and extremely rewarding! Especially on the upper difficulty levels (which Mr Hatfield seems to have ignored), where you really have to combine brainpower with quick reflexes to uncover and collect the air capsules while avoiding getting yourself crushed. Although I do wish that they would have snuck in a multiplayer mode or two.
Yeah, there's no way he even tried anything higher than the lowest difficulty setting if he claims you can see everything in 30 minutes. That's sort of like judging Super Mario Bros. based solely on world 1-1.
I also like the comment about the robot essentially giving the player twice as many lives. Not true, as aspyxiation works the same way as it does with the other characters, so it doesn't necessarily give you more lives, it just gives you room to make a foolish move or two. If depleting oxygen is responsible for most of your deaths (and it certainly is for mine) then it's not much of a help.
My review is finished...hopefully I can live up to the high standards IGN has managed to set.
Is there any confirmation of a DSiWare Driller game on the horizon? I have this thing where I don't really enjoy puzzle games on the big screen nearly as much, but I might make an exception for this one, only if there isn't a DSiWare option coming.
Dr. Mario on WiiWare is pretty much useless for me now except for occasional local multiplayer, because I never had the slightest inclination to launch it again after the DSi version was released, and I'm sure it'd be the same scenario with Driller.

You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Do you guys read what others have to say about him under his reviews?
@Chicken B an Sean- It's interesting reading that you guys think he screwed this up too.
No, usually I find the majority of IGN comments to be completely daft, but as long as you're asking...[time passes]...confirms what I already thought, though nice people are calling him on it. Sad that others actually believe him or are under the mistaken impression that the game lacks widescreen support (where in hell is that coming from?).
I can disagree with a review, but when someone gets it this wrong about a game I love, it just makes my blood boil! I'd type more, but then Chicken would have to edit my post!
I've never even heard of Mr. Driller (somehow), and puzzle games aren't my first choice when it comes to genres, but this looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the review Chicken!
It could use some multiplayer though... and more levels. The idea I got from the review was that Deameon likes Mr. Driller, but there's just been better versions before, and that's why it's kinda shameful that such an empty version came out.

And yet if someone who's not part of staff says things with the same lines of reasonings......[they are listened to if they show a level of common courtesy and are constructive, rather than destructive – Ed, Nanaki]
Anyway, I'm glad that people are finally getting how terrible IGN is with WiiWare reviews. This is one of the MANY abysmal reviews they've written for WiiWare games. I don't think this is the worst one yet... I've seen worse (and yes, for a WW review).
Thanks for this thread, I've been wanting to try this since it came out in Japan and Hatfield's review had seriously put me off. Good to hear he was way off.
I unlocked the secret character by making the leaderboard on the second endless stage (which requires you to reach 2000M). The secret character is a rabbit (named "rabbit", coincidentally enough) and he has an enhanced drill move which clears an extra block to the left and right of where you drill if you drill up or down, and an extra block above and below if you drill to the side. Pretty neat!
Edit - and he can also climb two blocks, like the dog!
