From what's in the video, it looks like current day, QTE Sonic. There goes my slight hope that Sonic could peek my interest at all...I can see it walking out the front door right now...

How the heck did you deduce that? I don't see anything that even vaguely resembles a QTE.
Quick Time Event. Where a game demands you press a button really quickly in order to progress without being penalized, often with little prior warning.

My personal opinion on current day 2D Sonic games are that they are a "hold down right/left D-pad and occasionally hit the A button to jump until you reach the end" fest. I know it's they're not really that, but it's some weird problem I just have. I need to de-fanboy myself.

@V8 Ninja Sonic Rush/Adventure and the recent console ones have been pretty much that. But the levels in Sonic 4 will hopefully be a return to form... Remember that video isn't of the release version (apparently it's still in early testing), so don't judge the level design or gameplay from it. Seems like they were still debugging a few things like the slope physics and the loop-the-loop.
And I have high hopes for a Sonic game for once! The video and screens fill me with nostalgic joy.

Nah, it's an alpha level (see post #6), looks like the developers were just goofing off and "speedrunning" the test stage. Judging by how Sonic moves compared to his Rush/Advance incarnations, this is much less focused on the hold-right-to-win gameplay. There's one thing that concrete confirms that this is just an alpha testing level (if the awful layout weren't evidence enough) - immediately after the 2 last chained ramps, there's just a massive wall with no way past (you can see it to the right at the end of the vid) and no edging tiles (the wall before the vertical loop also lacks edging tiles).
What I want to know is why is there a baby there watching this top secret gameplay? Notice any weird sounds in the background? Sounds to me like a baby. Maybe they used the baby as a way to draw attention away from their hidden camera?
This is a new low for sonic, appearing on Wiiware. Nintendo would never release a new mario on Wiiware, just look at New Super Mario Bros Wii and how well it sold. If I was a sonic fan I woulden't expect too mutch, since this game is on Wiiware it is a side project.

How is this a new low for Sonic? To me, this might give Sonic a chance to shine again. No, Sonic 06 was Sonic's lowest point, he can't go any lower than that. I much rather see an awesome WiiWare Sonic game than another retail Sonic horrorfest. Also, just because Nintendo doesn't release Mario on WiiWare doesn't mean Sega is forbidden to release a Sonic game on Wiiware. Your post did not make any sense.
Anyway, Sonic 4 looks very good if Dimps can fix the glitches and stuff. I saw the video, and it was an alpha build. I think the game will look a lot better when it's released.
