The SNES controller.

To each their own

I know this is cheating a bit, but I love the button layout of the GBA. If every 2D game in the world played with a GBA-ish controller, I would be a very happy man.

Disadvantages of each:
NES - Not enough buttons - Select often used as an action button
SNES - Shoulder buttons are slightly difficult to use. I guess.
N64 - Hands are too close together, useless left prong. Loose analog stick.
Gamecube - Slightly too small. D-Pad is horrible. C-Stick is under-utilized.
Wii - Not enough buttons, too hard to use B in coordination with A (seriously try playing NSMBW with remote+nunchuk)

Advantages of each:
NES - Simple design.
SNES - Rounded edges for more comfort
N64 - Handles contour nicely to hands. Analog stick is very accessible.
GC - Good button placement for some games, pressure-sensitive triggers, Analog stick is very accessible.
Wii - Allows independent motion of each hand. Motion controls.

I'm going to have to give it to N64. The closest competitor, GC, just doesn't work for some games, in terms of button placement. Trying to play a football game, for example, is quite a bother. Super Mario World is unplayable (although that is a VC title and thus should maybe be disregarded).

Without doubt the SNES controller.

I'm sure I've answered a topic like this before, few months ago...

But either way, Wii controllers by far. Having the freedom to hold your controllers wherever you like, separate from each other is very comfortable. There isn't even a contest, and I've been playing all Nintendo home-consoles since NES as a kid.

There he goes, Firkraag. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. - My VGscore

I have to agree with you on the freedom to hold the controller however you like. Since my right hand doesn't work very well for pressing buttons (I have no feeling in it so I sometimes miss when I think I'm hitting them) using the wiimote and nunchuck in the opposite hands as normal makes all the difference. Plus I like the "add attachments as needed" aspect of it. I was reading the Pearl Harbor game thread and I had visions of using the zapper and playing it like a light gun game if the controols can be configured that way.

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.

THe SNES controller by far. It was the right thickness that was easy to grab on to...the buttons feel just right. THe top buttons are perfect, no way the thumb doing 6 buttons is as fast....no way....THe best fighter controller ever as well. Very responsive.

VS. the classic controller.....it's pretty darn good but.....THE L and R buttons are TOO TALL! This results in a lot of travel between the time you start to hit the button, and when it hits the contact inside which makes it feel like "latency". You almost have to keep it half pressed all the time to get your moves out....it's in the ms range, which you can feel.. The 64 and snes buttons are not nearly this tall so they don't suffer this design flaw....and that's what it is. I thought of dissecting mine and seeing if anything could be done.

I say like this:
SNES
64
CC(trim those L/R buttons down nintendo)
Don't like the GC remote.....at all.

nes controller is big because of it's importance...you have to look at it in the context of it's time.

The CC is also harder to get a grip on. Compared to the SNES controller(which it's most shaped like), it's easier to get a better grip on the SNES controller.

I didn't have a prob at all with the 64 controller, mine are still in great shape so they held up well.. THe analog sticks on the cc are better IMO... I still give it to the snes controller!

Of course the wii remote is in a class all it's own.....but ergonomically is primarilly held like a remote control....if you play anything that doesn't use the motion controls it goes to the CC....which obviously will hurt the wiimote in general

personally i liked the gcn controller best, it just fit with the shape of my hand really well. or maybe it was just cuz i played it so much my hand molded to the shape of it. who knows?

oh and i like the NES controller too.

Gamecube is miles ahead, while the rest of the controllers just kind of fall into place behind it

The Wii controller, definitely. It gives you a bit more freedom with it than other controllers. Close behind is the SNES, which has the best button placements.

My least favorite is the N64 controller. I don't like the three handles, plus the control stick is awfully clunky. My second least favorite is the GC controller, which had an awful D-Pad. I liked the way the shoulder buttons on the GC felt when you used them, though.

Uh oh. He's back.

The trident is the best looking, and plays the best.

Although it has a fatal flaw, in it's easily damaged analog

SherlockHolmes

These are all good points but i have yet to see a wii controller or a trident controller to have mario, luigi, and wario versions of them.
