But I also like how it stands out from the crowd as well. With the lack of water levels, Kremlings/Zingers/King K. Rool, minimal Kong appearances, clunky, unnecessary motion based controls, limited animal friends you ride (1), you dont switch off from Diddy to DK simultaneously, and the levels where you ride those barrels by pressing and releasing the A button? I'll never understand why those levels are in this game...
So sure, Returns adds some new things for the series both good and bad but if you think about it hasn't every entry done something like this?
My wife and I are playing through it, and we are on the last world, about halfway done with it. We haven't even made getting all the letters/puzzle pieces a priority, but we are having a blast with the game.
I think some of the level designs are really awesome and memorable, World 4-5!(just to name one) We haven't even completed it yet, but have probably played 20+ hours so far...
just found this article about things that were cut:
"-one of the original silhouette levels was set on a snow-covered mountain at night.
Risa: "There was a full moon, alone in the sky. When Donkey Kong ran through that scene, it left a real impression. His red necktie was streaming behind him." http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=148042
my biggest disappointment in the game was that there were no snow levels, but that one sounds especially amazing. maybe in the sequel...
If you don't get it then you don't get it. Tidal wave level 1 thing new, running from spiders 2nd new thing, barrel flying levels - 3rd new thing....ummm..ran out. Okay 3 new mechanics and 5 new level ideas, other than that it's still jungle, forest, factory, etc, etc...swing here, barrel there. It's a rehash basically.
There are other mechanics that changed they way levels play. The tidal wave and the flying barrel level only affects a few levels. Those are changes that stand out. There are others that affect most levels like climbing grassy walls and ceilings is an example.
Whether you like the game or not is up to you. In most games these days there is more rehashing then new in most games. The Mario franchise has been "rehashed" over and over again. You could say that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a rehash but I'll still enjoy it.
i guess i`m not the only who saw this at the first factory level, am I ?
it blew my mind
I don't remeber seeing anything like that, other then Mr.Game&Watch.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
I should really get back to playing DKCR, I only have 110% Those Speed run are just hard to beat. but The Mirror mode is not that hard, I like it so far.

I forget, but the arcade DK is in one of the levels as a statue. EDIT:reads it again ...Wait what? lol
During 7-1, I'm not sure if its this level exactly, but there is a Donkey Kong arcade level in the background.
I saw it though.

Exactly. Some of the decisions were terrible, tapping the A button, I didn't even know how to control the barrel and died about 20 times before I figured it out. The design and controls were rather cumbersome and clunky at times.

Probably because having a snowy mountain on an island with a volcano wouldn't make sense, because snow doesn't mix with lava. It might've been because it had platforms that would fall and some that wouldn't and it got complicated, but I don't know because it was Retro's work. It does sound very intresting, though.
You can still have snow. Anyway this is the original and my DKC island...

Except that you would have complained at how white the snow levels were; just so bland.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
I have beef with a game, and it's typical of children to resort to insults and name calling. I'll forgive you kids.
No I wouldn't complain about too white of snow levels, no I'm not exaggerating or dumb, and the flying barrels weren't inventive at all they were broken and cumbersome. And a CHORE to get through. I kept tapping a speed up, then I would ram into something or serve up and down, and want to kill something. I didn't realize you could just hold it in and gentle ease off, once you were up, they should have just let you control up or down with the stick...worse idea ever that they implemented. They were worse than the flying levels in Mario galaxy and every time one of those popped up I would groan and avoid it like the plague.
They added nothing and broke up the gameplay far too much in a bad way. By far the weakest levels in DKC where the barrel flying ones, followed closely by far too many mine cart levels, and not enough variety in mines.
They need to get off the Island on to different directions. The reason the 2nd one was so good and felt like a true sequel was because it explored other areas other than that in the first game.
