It is now. The technology inside can not possible cost even half the amount Nintendo is charging. However, we all know Nintendo makes it's main money off hardware and not software (Like Apple) so expect the price to be the same for a long time, especially when sales really don't fall that much.
Yes, it is overpriced. I think Nintendo should cut the price down to $150. I mean the PS3 and Xbox 360 are getting cheaper and cheaper, so Nintendo needs to swallow their pride and cut the price down. It is simple as that.
Actually, when you consider what the costs are for all the components of the PS3 and the Wii, the wii is the overpriced one. I think the wii needs a price cut, not now but this holiday season.
Why does the cost of the components matter to you? They could make a solid gold console and sell it for a matching price but that wouldn't make it less overpriced in its console role. Don't compare components, compare results. If you think the PS3 offers a much better gaming experience than the Wii (and I mean that in absolutely every respect relevant in the real world including the game library) then you can say that to you the PS3 is worth significantly more. To me the high software prices on the HD systems massively reduce the system's value (as I can get less gaming for the same money).
You have to remember that technical specs and price differences don't mean everything to the average consumer. Most Wii purchasers are 30-something parents who saw it at their friends house and thought it looked like something that both they and their kids could enjoy. They don't go into the shops trying to work out what game console is the best for them. They walk in, walk right upto the counter and, knowing full well how much it costs, say "I want one of those Wii things". They probably know what the PS3 and 360 are (the new version of that Playstation thing that the kids used to play and the XBox thing thats corrupting our kids) but they don't care.... they want a Wii and the other consoles aren't a Wii.
Its like with the iPod. People don't walk into the shops asking for a device capable of playing music. They walk in and say "I wan an iPod". It was the same with the Gameboy, it was the same with the Playstation before the Wii and its becoming the same with the DS. Their competitors don't even exist in the eyes of most consumers and people are still buying it. So why would you cut the price?
I just think it goes against the normal way of doing things, you could argue that PS3 and 360 didn't have to have all those price cuts, sure they wheren't in 1st place in terms of sales but that doesn't mean they had to do it, I'm sure they attracted more customers though, and I'm sure the same would happen for the wii, there is the gamer who might consider it as a second console, and if they are a kid who's parents has already bought them a 360 or PS3, then I think they would have a much better chance if it was $150 than $250, maybe most people who wanted the wii now have it, but I'm sure a price cut would suddenly have more people interested in it, particuarly as a secondary console or for non gamers.
PS3 and 360 are in direct competition with each other given the degree of popular title overlap between them, so a price war between them is understandable. The Wii has little overlap with those systems, hence no need for Nintendo to respond to them. Again, if Nintendo perceives that sales are slowing beyond a point they regard as unsustainable then they'll cut the price and not until then.
The day the PS3 Slim is $250 and the Wii is still $250 in the year 2011 That's when the wii is overpriced.
Uhm you don't have to compare the price of one console with another to call it overpriced. A console can be overpriced completely by itself. I think the Wii is already overpriced. But overpriced is a relative term. I think a console is overpriced if the retail price is way higher than the production and hardware costs. And the Wii's hardware + production is about 100€ (read an article from 2006 where it said 164 dollar so now it costs way less and converted to € probably about 100) and paying more than 140€ more than the console is worth is overpriced in my opinion
Eh, a soda at Taco Bell is like $1.19 or whatever when the soda itself costs them about 4 cents and the cup maybe another 4 cents, but I still feel like $1.19 is overpriced. Nintendo has to mark up the Wii when selling to distributors, then they mark it up for the consumer. But I just don't care since I have my Wii already. I don't see how a small price drop would hurt, considering how fast PS3 and 360's prices are dropping.
The Wii is perfectly priced in the US. No need to drop the price when a company is focusing on the blue ocean strategy. In fact, price drops are a red ocean strategy.
Besides, I'll rather take a console that's more expensive than the Xbox 360 arcade & somewhat cheaper than the PS3, has a growing of fun games that're cheap in price, & great backwards compatibility rather than a system that isn't reliable hardware-wise, has more expensive games, & has a library of 80% M-rated games. I'm not against M-rated games or anything, but I'm not old enough to but M-rated games by myself yet.
