In this topic, we discuss whenever or not the Nintendo Wii is overpriced. Give out your opinion if you wish, but respect others too.
Personally, the Wii is very overpriced, in fact, it might end up being more expensive then the Xbox 360 in the long run. Being force to put preripheals after peripheals sounds like a rip-off in most cases. Sure, some like Wii Speak and Wii MotionPlus are good and all, but most are unecessary and makes Nintendo the laughing stocks of the Nintendo fanbase, which is just sad.
At least the PS3 is affordable and don't constantly require you to pay for new preripheals.
I got mine for $212. I think its good at that price. The other systems have been selling at a loss which is a typical practice yet I would think nintendo is making money on every wii sold. Nintendo doesn't NEED to do anything but it would be nice if there was a price drop or new official bundles or special packages. We've had the same Wii+Wii sports deal since launch it would be nice to have a new cheaper model, a new color, new pack in games, maybe pack in motion plus or something. Stores have their own rip off bundles but some kind of official nintendo pack I'm sure would sell well even if it was just the wii with a sticker on it

Wait a second - you were forced to buy peripheals? Maybe I should have read the entire Iwata came over to my house today topic - I never knew he came over to the houses to rough pll up for ot buying peripheals!
Also - which peripheal made Nintendo a laughing stock??? Why do you care?
Also - most come bundled with the game for regular or low low price -
exps
MK / Excitebots wheel $50 and $40 with games
Wii M+ - $50 with game
Crossbow - $20 wwith game Balance Baord - $90 with software
what else is there????
Need I remeind you $60 is the HD game starting point - 16% higher than standard wii?
Buy Guitar Hero or Rockband and complain about peripheals lol - hell ppl like them they drive game sales! $250 for Beatles Rock Band, no thanks Ringo!
If Wii was overpriced - it would not sell!
Talk to the consoles that have had half a dozen SKU's already and another 1/2 dozen price cuts - lol!
Apparently 360 is underbuilt -and therefore OVER PRICED - it is the least reliable console in gaming history!
PS3 you get to carry water for the failed bluray format - just 2 million stnad alone bluray players sold in US in 3 years - that is a big who cares - and they are only 5% of total DVD sales - lame. Put that harness on if you like, but you are subsidising the whole of Sony when you buy a PS3 - dont blame wii!
This topic is marlarky especially since most poster here bought a wii a long time ago - do you want wii slim so you can buy another one for no reason?
It´s like to compare a Mac against a PC only by numeric standarts like performance and price.
I know many people that bought a Wii because they dont care about the concept behind the PS3 / 360. They donk like the complex controllers and / or aren´t interested in the kind of games or further features. Most of them were female, casual players who mostly never owned a console but a DS Lite. Most of them have already young children
For them, a PS3 Slim is total uninteresting and so is it´s price. Because they simply want a Wii for Wii Fit, Zelda, Mario Kart, Wii Sports or Animal Crossing. You know, motion and family stuff. Not Motorstorm, Resi 5 or Halo 3. And I can totaly understand why they choose the Wii.
For the more "experienced" gamers, who are interested in every kind of games and features, a Wii gets compared to the PS3 / 360 and then, yes, it is overpriced now.
Honestly it's a trade-off. The 360 and PS3 are becoming less expensive themselves but their accesories and games are still more expensive than the Wii's.

"Do you think the Wii is overpriced?". Yes! I bought mine for £180 three years ago, it is now £200. Huh?!
"PS3 is affordable and don't constantly require you to pay for new peripherals.". Ergh, what about the Playstation Eye, remote control, keyboard, headset, and as yet un-priced motion control wand thingies. Huh?!
Lets compare some core experiences for the three major consoles. Basically I have gone online and grabbed some (Australian) prices of these systems with two of the games people are likely to buy when they get it, a second controller and to keep the 360 on par I also included wireless because to me that's important.
Wii $388 - Wii Console $79 - Wii Sports Resort with Motion Plus $79 - Super Mario Galaxy $27 - Extra Motion Plus $64 - Wii Remote $27 - Nunchuk $45 - Component Cable Total: $709
XBox 360 $499 - 120GB Xbox 360 Console Elite $134 - Wireless network adapter $64 - Extra Controller $99 - Halo 3 $79 - GTA4 Total: $875
Yes you could argue that the price of the Wii skyrockets when you start to get a heap more of the accessories but the same happens with the other consoles. If Natal and Sony's option become standard add an extra $200 to both of those prices and they no-longer sound like bargains. And I don't know about you but the PS3/360 game prices are very hard to stomach.
Something is only worth as much as people are willing to pay for it. Yes the Wii is expensive when you look at the dated technology it uses but then you are given a whole new style of control to use with it ,so swings and roundabouts really.Plus if you look at the amount of use and enjoyment you get out of it then it's pretty good value for money. Let's be honest though gaming's never been a cheap hobby but actually prices for consoles and games is not that much different than is the snes/md era (in the UK at least) so in that way the current consoles are a bargain.(I remember paying £50 for snes/md games 18 years ago.)
People are still buying wii's so why should nintendo lower there price? People that have a 360 have to pay like $6 a month to go online and the wii online play is free. Also out of the 3 people I know who have a 360, 2 of them have promblems with it. And the ps3 has not to many good games that you can't find on to many other systems.
You are not "forced" to buy all of Nintendo's crazy peripherals, but when they start making the horseback riding and football playing peripherals mandatory for all Wii games, you might be able to convince me to agree with your line of thinking.
The day the PS3 Slim is $250 and the Wii is still $250 in the year 2011 That's when the wii is overpriced.

Uhm you don't have to compare the price of one console with another to call it overpriced. A console can be overpriced completely by itself. I think the Wii is already overpriced. But overpriced is a relative term. I think a console is overpriced if the retail price is way higher than the production and hardware costs. And the Wii's hardware + production is about 100€ (read an article from 2006 where it said 164 dollar so now it costs way less and converted to € probably about 100) and paying more than 140€ more than the console is worth is overpriced in my opinion
Actually, when you consider what the costs are for all the components of the PS3 and the Wii, the wii is the overpriced one. I think the wii needs a price cut, not now but this holiday season.

Instead of a price drop, I would like to see motion plus bundled with the remotes or remotes that have motion plus built in for the same price for new systems. That seems like it would be a fair way to keep the peripheral prices from getting out of control. In reality though, getting them bundled with games really isn't a bad deal. Every extra accessory I got for the wii, except for one nunchuck, came with a game.
Wii Play/Second Wiimote
Wii Sports Resort/Motion Plus
Tiger Woods/Motion Plus 2
It would just be more convenient for new players to not have to buy the wiimote and the addons. Knowing Nintendo, they're probably waiting for a bunch of people to buy the add ons, and then they'll release the streamlined wiimotes, hoping that the hardcore will pay twice.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
Nintendo is going to have to begin to consider a price drop whether they like it or not. While I don't think it's necessarily over-priced, the other consoles have closed the gap enough to warrant a price drop consideration.
I haven't really looked at the other systems enough to know whether the Wii is truly overpriced or not. I do know that if I had not bought a Wii a few months ago, before the PS3 price dropped, I would have probably purchased the PS3 once they did announce their "PS3 slim" design. Why? I have a PS2 and while the PS3 is not backward compatible, I know the type of games that Sony puts out, and I really enjoy them. For instance, I've been playing Unreal Tournament for at least the past 5 to 6 years, so FPS style games are right up my alley. Wii lags far behind in that category. However, now that I have the Wii, I am impressed by the controls and the games that they do have, so I am glad I purchased it. Does this mean I will not buy a PS3 in the future? Hardly, I will probably do so eventually.
So, is the Wii overpriced? Depending on the people and the type of system/options they are looking for, it may very well be.
Yes. But nearly everytime I go to a games shop I see another Mum buying a Wii. They don't seem to care how much it costs they just have to have one. I wish they didn't buy a load of shovelware to go with it though.
