Topic: Castlevania series question

Quick question, as I haven't played most of these games in a verrry long time...

...but do any of the numbered Castlevania games (1-4) have a difficulty select and / or level select option?

If so, is there music that plays in the background while you make your selection?

I ask for a very dull (yet legitimate) reason.

There's no difficulty options for the first four unfortunately. Bloodlines had one but that game's sadly not on the VC yet.

It's OK to have an opinion. This ain't the Soviet Union you know.

Dang.

I need a similarly classic action game that has a level or difficulty select option, preferably on its own screen.

...any of the Contras, maybe?

According to Wikipedia, Contra 3: The Alien Wars has 3 difficulties. Easy, normal, and hard.

@y2josh - yes, it does. In the options menu, you get to choose the difficulty.

Awesome guys, thanks. Is there music in the options menu? I can't find it on youtube if so.

Unfortunately, Contra III: The Alien Wars does not have a sound test in the options menu, and it's a shame, really, as it has some very awesome music (this highly epic third stage theme comes to mind). The only way to listen to the music outside of the game is on YouTube, afaik.

Actually I just meant to ask if there is background music playing while you are in the options menu. Any idea?

Are you talking about a sound test, or just general background music?
Can it just be a classic game, or something from the NES?

What specific and obscure questions lol. For what dull yet legitimate reason do you need to know these things? My mind is reeling with possibilities... ;P

Preferably something from the NES. Something actiony and relatively mindless (no offense, Castlevania or Contra fans...), but classic. I need a game along those lines with a level and/or difficulty select option, with background music that plays while you are making that selection.

AM I REALLY ASKING TOO MUCH HERE??

It's for my novel project actually. All for the sake of a throwaway line, but I at least want to make sure I get it accurate. I was hoping for Castlevania, but that doesn't seem to be the right tree to bark up here.

@Brutus - On Contra III: The Alien Wars, there is no music playing in the options menu; there isn't even any music playing in the title screen. Sorry, I thought the post was a bit vague, and I interpreted it as "is there a sound test in the options menu?".

Didn't Excitebike have multiple difficulties?
I don't know if it qualifies as difficulties.

River City Ransom also appears to have multiple difficulties:

"The number of difficulty settings was reduced from three to two and an alternate 2-player mode (2P Play B)..."
Someone else has to check the music part, because that would require me downloading ROMs currently.

Now that I think about it, most old games - even up to the 16-bit era - didn't use music in the options screen. Streets of Rage 2 had quiet (menacingly hollow and empty) mode select and option screens with empty black backgrounds.

If you can use the password screen Super Castlevania IV should work well. That's got some nice music, and the screen functions as both level and difficulty select, at least if you're like me and you've written down all the passwords for all the stages after you've already killed Dracula once and there are twice as many enemies and they take twice as much damage.

Yeah, a password screen might work fine. I think I'll use the one from Castlevania IV...thanks guys. You rock.

Hey, and if the character you're writing is named "Iain" I can give a completely accurate password for any level in the game on hardtype or for the last four bosses. Of course, since every password is a 4x4 grid of axes, holy water, and hearts, it might not translate to prose so well . . .
