sakamoto loves finding ways to break formulas in games and deny you what you expect. you've picked up powerups from enemies thousands of times before, why not give this new system a chance? it'll probably be extremely intense when you're about to die in a boss fight, trying to find a safe place to rest for a moment to refill...
It's called channeling your inner Chi. I do it in real life all the time. It's not going to suck it's going to add a level of realism unheard of before!
Raylax and romulux: You win. Item Drops have become so expected that we take them for granted... when really it's a totally arbitrary bit of video-game tradition. Why would all these creatures be carrying ammo for your guns, anyway? Makes no sense. And yes, the reward of beating an enemy and replenishing your stuff often feels good, but I sort of like the attempt to shrug off needless tradition and give us a new way of keeping our ammo in stock. It also harkens back to the best game show of all time: Classic Concentration!

Little Irves, lots of games have explanations for enemies holding power-ups. Even Metroid Fusion explained it with the X. Maybe they're generally weak explanations, but it's a video game. The game comes first, explanations second.
The only way I could see this somehow being more difficult is if there are infinitely respawning enemies, which would be annoying. Otherwise, you'd just clear one room, refill missiles and health, and move on to the next. Unless they make every single room absolutely brutal and requiring all your missiles, it seems easy in theory.
And as for bosses, there are some bosses in Metroid games that drop power-ups, but not all of them, and generally not enough to make a huge difference in the first place. It's not like they'll just sit there while you refill health. So if this new system allows you to refill health mid-boss-battle, that would be a step back, I'd think, not a means of somehow making it more intense by allowing you to completely restore your health and missiles.
But I'm just hypothesizing. No way to know until we've played it, which I will be doing no matter what because it's Metroid and Nintendo is at least half-responsible for it once again.
the way i see it it's almost like an RPG, where you have a character who can refill your health at will. it's not as easy as it sounds; you have to choose the right timing and use some strategy to make it work in those games. maybe that's what sakamoto was going for, or maybe it's just an arbitrary way of trying something new. either way, i like the idea.
I think everyone should give it a chance and see for themselves when it comes out. I remember that the item drops in previous games were really easy and boring, when you can easily farm them after every room and with this new method Samus can't do anything while concentrating so you have to strategically use it. Yes you can do this after clearing rooms too, but it will be less annoying, repititive, and boring than the previous way was, just saying.

So standing minutes in the same room, watching the same spot (like I did in Prime 2 with the crystals) isn't annoying, repititive, and boring? Well, imo, it is.
It turns out that enemies will not drop ANY health or missile pickups and will rely solely on a concentration move where you hole the wiimote upright and press A and then some of your health and missiles will replenish.
How is this necessarily a bad thing? This is actually going to be quite nice since this will be a bit of a challenge which in the end will make it more rewarding. It may get frustrating for the noobs who will play this or just the gamers with less skill but for me, this is welcomed and it doesn't bother me at all.
I read about this in IGN awhile back. It's a pretty interesting change for the series. I read that it only refills a bit of your heath but not all in an interview, so that causes me to wonder what DOES increase all your health? Somehow I doubt the game will be ridiculously challenging so there has to be something.

@ChronoCross: did she say she wasn't going to buy or rent the game? or even hint at that? in fact, she said that she was still quite hopeful for the game. and by system she was referring to the health/ammo recovery method (a.k.a. health/ammo recovery system) of the game, not referring to the Wii. briunj isn't some troll who would come on here just to talk about how much the Wii sucks.
personally, i don't think it will make much difference. as people have pointed out, both the classic method of waiting for an enemy to respawn then shooting it for its health/ammo items and this new concentration system can both be seen as "easy." i doubt there will be much if any chance to use this in boss battles, at least not significantly. ultimately, i think it will turn out to be about the same in the end, as each area does look to be far more intense than in previous games. anyway, i'm not really worried. Ninty's still got their hand in this, so i don't believe for a minute it will be unbalanced or "a blight on the Metroid name." and even without Nintendo's influence, Team Ninja is plenty accomplished, themselves, and i think they've earned my trust.

Isn't that why I asked questions there slick? Yeah that's why I asked him questions. To find out if he was going to even buy this game because if a minor change like that is going to throw someone off of purchasing it then wow. I wasn't saying "OMG your not buying it!!!???" no I didn't.
And I know Briunj isn't a troll.

I think briun was just kidding around at that time (he also said in that thread that he was a nine-year old male). I think that briun somewhere said that briun, iirc, is thirteen and male.
Sorry, bro. What I meant to say was: when briun said that briun was a sixteen-year old female, and eventually said that briun was a nine-year old male, in the thread that you shared, he was just playing around. In a certain thread (I forget which), he revealed his true age and gender (which I believe is thirteen and male). Again, I apologize for the confusion.
Still, Metroid: Other M sounds like it's gonna be challenging, and I love challenge.
heheh, let me rephrase what i meant to say: "Being a metroid fan, ive gotten use to the pickup system and its been a staple in the series. replacing it with something as easy as clicking A is preposterous!! hate the new health/missile system, still getting the game"
