This is my first post, I'm excited to get involved within the nintendolife community.
Anyway, I'm just wondering what the response from the Wii U has been from people around you? Personally, a lot of non-gamers (and casual gamers) I know don't understand the concept. They think it's either an add-on , or upgrade, to the current Wii. It's been hard getting the concept around — especially trying to explain to people why I would pay so much money for a pre-order (but that's a gamer thing on its own xP )
Secondly, none of my family cares about games in the slightest (except my dad, who only cares for MLB the Show, and nothing else exists. Seriously, he got a PS3 just for MLB the Show 2010).
As for my friends, they have either "grown out" of gaming, or are just into CoD (not that that's a bad thing, but they're content with their PS3/360s, so Wii U isn't even on their radar).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
My wife "watched" the conference through the Wii's horrid Nintendo Channel stream, and she actually said after watching it... "Do you think we should wait on getting one."
In other words, she wasn't impressed with what she saw, and Nintendo failed to interested her with anything they showed. She enjoys games, a wide variety, and I was hoping that she might see something from the conference to help her get on the Wii U boat... unfortunately due to Nintendo's horrid PR/marketing teams, and their horrid video streaming through the Nintendo Channel, the conference did the opposite of what I was hoping.

Would I be right to assume you're more into Video games than her and thus would use it more?
If so, I would imagine she was asking if you thought it would be a good system, that question seems not one of uninterest, but curiosity.
Although I obviously didn't hear her tone, so I wouldn't know, but from the wording, thats what I would guess.
I don't see how the Wii's video streaming plays a part though...
I showed my brother the NintendoTVii showing and the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 reveal and he thinks it's awesome. I told my dad bits and pieces of NintendoTVii and he thought it was alright, but he's not really a gamer...anymore. I told my mom only the name Wii U and instantly knew it was a new console I wanted. As for my friends, they think it'll be the best thing for gaming since sliced bread, but they'll stick with their 360s and PS3s for now.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
My friends are very interested in it and would love to try it. But most of them play solely on PC and I doubt they're buying any of the future systems. But that fits me well since we'll have a (Metroid) blast over at my place with the WiiU & a couple of beers. Nintendo systems and friends are always a great mix.
As for the family, I recently sold my Wii to one of my sisters. So they won't be upgrading any time soon. She did say it looked really fun and that she'd love to get one since both she and her kids love Mario games. Rest of the family is pretty indifferent about consoles in general, they enjoy playing them, but that's about it.

Zero interest. My sister's kid lost interest in the Wii a few months after they bought it. They replaced it with a 360 and never looked back. They've ignored everything I've sent them about the Wii U. Nintendo won't win them back.
After being dissatisfied with the experiences of my 369 and ps3, I thought maybe I'm just not a "hardcore" gamer (I'm the sense that the term is used nowadays, that is). So after hearing that this thing will support fill 1080p and a REAL online service, I've decided to give it a chance. Plus, I've wanted to be able to download and play the original Zelda. So maybe I've REALLY just been a Nintendo fan all along!

It's interesting to see how opinions have changed since I was a kid. I remember throughout middle school and some high school I was made fun of a lot for having a gamecube, etc. It was the 'kiddy" system (despite the fact of us all being kids at that time).
Now that I'm in my 4'th year of University, Nintendo has become a positive icon. I'm come out of my nerd closet entirely! ha
Maybe Nintendo should start putting "completely new console--not just a silly looking controller add-on for your old wii!" in their adverts, especially since this is marketed to the casual gaming crowd and all.
This predicament reminds me of the NES to SNES. All they did was add "Super", yet it was an entirely new system. But times have changed since then with people who weren't interested in video games now factoring in.
Some people knew it was a new system, but others (especially my Aunt, and older people in general) Just though it was an upgrade. I believe a name change would have been best. Just something that would make it stand out more.
