Personally I hate to play games online, specially with/against strangers. That is why I would never buy anything like Titanfall.
With friends you can coordinate with Skype, AIM or any other messaging tool, but then I hate when you or them get disconnected.
So I only play single player, or local when friends come over. And I play some coop games like Dragon's Crown or RE6 with my brother, also locally.
I do it all the time when I''m playing Ps3 games and dont really have an issue. Everything is fine as long as I have a mic and sometime I dont even use one.
I don't think the average Nintendo owner is into the online competitive aspects of gaming (aside from Mario Kart and Smash Bros).
Microsoft and Sony have games and online services that foster a competitive atmosphere, like voice chat, ability to play with anyone, online leader boards, etc. Nintendo, at least with the Wii, tried to make online play as difficult to enjoy as possible. The Wii-U isn't much better for it either.
This is the sad truth. I'm guilty of this due to the games I own for the system.

Apart from Achievements/Trophies, the Wii U provides equal amount of functions in online multiplayer. Voice chat on the Wii U is by far the easiest to access due to the 3.5mm audio jack.

I'm fine with playing SOME games online. Lag and player skill variances is usually why I choose to quit, for a while,
Also, there's still plenty of flaws in the games, themselves. I was playing Titan Fall, last night, and it shows a replay of video game "physics" not working as they should. Close encounter fights in shooting games are usually stupid as can be,

But at this point, anyone who is serious about online competitive multiplayer has either moved on from Nintendo completely or plays those games on a PS or Xbox instead, because that's where most people who play those games are at (and have been for the last 10 years).
And face it, most Nintendo owners are families, younger gamers, or people not interested in playing online games against anonymous people. The Wii-U could be setup perfectly for online play, but most people won't use it.
1. Put PM system in place which is found on Home Menu on Gamepad.
2. Make it simple and quick.
3. When recieving a message, give notification on screen.
4. Profit.
Seems simple enough, but Nintendo still hasn't done this yet...it would help a lot.

With that said.......I never pay attn to how many players are in the lobby when I play MH3U online. I never play with random ppl either. I have friends on Twitter that I contact when I want to hunt and my room is password protected.
i'd be willing to play online with friends for monster hunter .-." if i knew people around town who owned the wii u version. i dont know anyone with the wii u version though, and i hate working with strangers >_<" i'd rather work with people i can trust to not screw around during the hunt.
Because it's been over a year since Momsirer Hunter, and 5 months since Ghosts. People have moved onto other games, and/or are like me and don't play online.

But the point OP was making was that on his PS3 there are still 40K+ playing a three year old COD game, while on the Wii-U there is barely 1000 playing a brand new one. That's pretty pathetic.

I do agree multiplayer people are mostly people who owns playstation or xbox. Heck, they are the ones who made online console gaming what it is today.
HOWEVER, my point is why do these people who bought COD ghosts and MH3U on the Wii U don't play them online? Don't tell me people play COD for campaign (although COD's campaign are pretty awesome)...

I have Monster Hunter for my Wii U and I haven't started online yet. I'm still learning the controls and stuff. I will play online as soon as I feel ready.

Typical Nintendo owners, man. If they bought the game at all they played it like a Mario game, just breezed through the campaign mode only and then threw down their controllers saying "what else is there to play?" Lol
You could say the same thing about Assassin's Creed or CoD. Not only that, but quality has gone pretty low... The industry is full of the same 'ol, that people keep buying,
