@IceClimbers While I agree that we're way past the point of trying to pass this off as a hoax, don't say that there's no chance, because Project M and Smashify disagree whole-heartedly.

Nintendo goofed out and rolled the update in Japan earlier, and then they removed the need for update.

Just because the surprise's been spoiled doesn't mean you can't enjoy the direct (we might get a cool trailer for each fighter so that's always something).
....Does NintendoLife have the time wrong for the Smash thing? It's saying 40 minutes left...and I'm in EST, if it's supposed to be 7:40 PT then should it start at 10:40 here?

I just watched a video of Ryu vs Luigi. Erm...why does Ryu have Mario as a portrait?
Mario's a place holder for DLC characters, and they could only play as Ryu by hacking.
Surely by that the hacker could put some nonsense character in like Shrek?
No because there was no Shrek data in the update. The hackers only took data included in the update and applied them to the game engine...or something like that.
