Tried going for S+ today, but unfortunately I ranked down instead. I got put in a lobby with A- ranked people and found it incredibly easy overall. I had little trouble in my matches (and kind of carried my team haha), but it did get difficult once some S ranks had joined. I was still able to win all of my matches though and made it back into S rank. I find it rather interesting since several weeks ago, I had trouble advancing into A rank from A- and was stuck between B+ and A-.

I'll just go try secure my rank further.

I think something important for me to enjoy this game is to just not care about rank at all anymore. I'm coming back from a long break on this game and I remember the falling and rising in rank would get me really stressed.

@VeeFlamesNL Am I allowed to post offsite links? If so, here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/805617-splatoon/71923500 should help. Just take what's said with a pinch of salt.

Oh, I didn't realize brands had different chances of getting certain sub abilities. I'm kind of happy with the abilities I have now, but I might use some different clothing choices to get better chances with some abilities.
I just hope that the clothing choices are ones I like.

Also in my current set, I've been thinking about what to have as a main ability for my shirt. One I sometimes use has defence (the only defence boost I would be using) or cold blooded. I like cold blooded since I can lose a marker from echolocator, but with a charger they can usually find out quickly where I am at with my laser sight.

Same thing happened to me. At one point, I was really focused on rankings and was getting annoyed every time I lost a match. Eventually, I realised that I wasn't enjoying the game and I gave the game a break for a few weeks. When I came back to it I tried not to worry about rankings. Since then, I've been having much more fun with the game.

@yokokazuo: @VeeFlamesNL:

You can also take a look at the links I've posted in this post and the summary in the following one, you'll find plenty of detailed information (even with side-by-side comparison videos) on the abilities. I knew that gamefaqs link and it's also good, but I didn't post it because it would've been redundant.
Maybe I'll make a guide out of all this one day.

Quick Respawn imo is one of the better abilities especially if you play aggressively and as a result get splatted often. How effective is it? Well, during our private matches; I had 2 of them as main abilities. I remember them being helpful for Tower Control in particular.

It is? That sounds interesting! Quick Respawn is one the abilities that I avoided so far, although I know by stacking them I could really save some important seconds, since I usually tend to play aggressively get splatted often. Maybe I should give it a try...

Something to note about abilities, is that stacking abilities reduces the cumulative effect.

So, if say, the first Sub ability has an imaginary effect of 10, the second Sub might have a further effect of 8, adding up to an effect of 18. A third Sub might then have an effect of 6, adding up to a total effect of 24. A Main ability is worth just over 3 sub effects, so in this hypothetical scenario, it would have an effect of 25. On Six Subs, the effect isn't double the value of Three Subs, it would actually be around 31, not a drastic increase from three subs.

This is therefore why most people have Three Different Main Abilities, and Three Different Sets of Three Sub Abilities, as you get the best effect across a wide scale.

It is possible to get a Maximum Effect from an Ability, but it's really negligable compared to three Subs/ One Main. If Subs have a value of 3, and Mains have a value of 10 (So, about three Subs), it's possible to have a maximum effect of 40 on one ability. (Say, Respawn Up). But due to the minimizing cumulative effect, the actual difference in effect between 3 and 6 values is much, much greater than the difference in effect between 36 and 39 values.

I remember reading studies done by people with far more time on their hands than I have, compared the effect of stacking 40 value worth of abilities on, with what the stat was originally.

Damage Up and Defence Up, except with .Gal 52s, are nigh on redundant, and only really cancel out the other.

The two Speed Ups had a moderate effect, although the swim speed up is regarded as better, due to you being more likely to be in squid form longer.

Quick Respawn and Quick Super Jump also had a fair effect, but, again, logistically, would only work exceptionally well if you were playing a campy beakoner, or, like I do, a fast paced player who isn't afraid of a few deaths.

In my opinion, a fair few abilities are rather redundant. Bomb Sniffer is rather redundant, as Ink Mines aren't massively common, and even if you've just triggered one, if you're fast enough, they're avoidable.
Haunt is also rather redundant, as whilst it is situationally useful, it requires that your teammates be able to do something with the information they've been given, which is not always possible.
Tenacity is not bad, but a lack of gear that carries it, and questionable brands on those that do stop this from being extremely good.
Cold-Blooded is useful further down the ranks, but, any good sniper will probably spot you anyway. Those guys and gals are ungodly shots...
Recon is also a bit pointless higher up, as a good player should be able to spot where other players are, by new paint marks appearing, and also, the information from this will be virtually redundant by the time you've swum/jumped over there.
Final Gambit is a mixed bag, especially in ranked, as whilst many high up matches do run on for the whole time, some do not, meaning that slot was wasted that match.

That is all my opinion, and I would love to be proved wrong. I was proved wrong on Stealth Jump, and now I absolutely love the thing. I'll definitely try and work on an 'Ability Tier List' at some point, noting if there are any abilities which are much higher/ lower placed for an individual weapon. (Like Strength Ups on .52 Gals and E-Liters

@TheXReturns: I agree with everything you've said, except for damage up being useless. I saw a video the shows damage up is good for rollers and sloshers. Other than that though, I do think damage up is useless. For rollers and sloshers, it gives a little more damage if the enemy is hit on the side of the attack. So, if I barely hit someone with the side of my slosh, it should give them a little more damage. If don't use damage up, because I didn't notice that much of a difference, but it does help some. I feel like they're too many shirts with haunt and cold-blooded. A lot of fashionable shirts have them, too. I like my Inkling to not be a fashion disaster, so I wish some of those shirts had a better ability, like swim speed up. XD

I thought that for a long time, too, but it doesn't apply to all of them. Some of them don't give diminishing returns but are fully stackable (Special saver goes up to 100%) : Ink Saver (Main and Sub), Special Charge Up, Special Saver and possibly more are suspected to also be fully stackable, at least according to this thread on gamefaqs, which was doubted afterwards.
Also, Bomb Range Up apparently does only diminish if you have three mains.

@OorWullie: No problem, I was ruling ranked battles anyway. Straight from the start, I won ten matches in a row and went up to A- 78. But then I just got a disconnect and -10 for that. :/ After that, the game didn't get any connection. I'll try it again and if everything is fine again, we can squad up.

@Blue_Blur: Damage Up is usefull especially for the .52 Gal, because you can kill with two hits instead of three. But for other weapons, it won't change how many hits you need to make (only the amount of ink needed decreases), according to this wiki entry:

It is programmed into the game that no weapon can pass their innate "number of hits to splat" threshold. For example, the Aerospray MG has a base damage of 24.5, meaning that it takes five hits to splat an enemy Inkling. The game will not allow the Aerospray to splat in less than five hits. Therefore, Damage Up will cap the Aerospray's damage at 24.9, so it will still take five hits to splat.

BTW, did anyone know this Splatoon Calculator? Just found it through Google. Looks useful.

@TheXReturns I use damage up with the 3K since I don't need a full charge to kill people when using it. The nerf reduced its effectiveness slightly, but while it went down from a half charge kill with a couple damage ups to a 3/4 charge, it is still better than having to do a full charge.
