@shani: How about I blame what I want? Thanks. It has a lot to do with who you're matched up with you fool. I've been to S twice and hear is a shocker, I'm just as good or just as bad as I was then. Keep your thoughts to yourself

@wisdomsprince: Well, first you blame the matchmaking and now you blame your teammates (which I can actually relate to). Which one is it?
Sure, sometimes I also get a bit aggravated by this, but stating that "the Splatoon Matchmaker has virtually complete control over who wins every game" is just not true (if anything, only in a few cases and it was drastically improved recently) and sounds like a big excuse to me.
I'm just saying, going up and down is just normal in this game.

It also has nothing to do with matchmaking or the game itself. It's just human nature. Show me one online game where this doesn't happen. The human factor always creates errors and faulty playing. That's just how it is. If you don't like it, don't play online games (I actually hated online games once because you can't control your teammates).
Besides, just playing good on your own isn't enough, you have to play good as a team.

@shani: Of course they have complete control, they decide which weapons go with what and they know who has w/l ratio over the last 4 hours and they know streaks etc. If you pay attention this latest release makes it more clear what is going on. They add people who have been losing together more often. So, if you have lost 5 in a row and I have lost 5 in a row they will put us on the same team which means you're more likely to extend your losing streak. If, however, you are low within your rank they will put you on a team with players who have won 5 in a row to "get you out of the funk". It's blatant manipulation. Remember, now in the post match screen they order you by who has the best record over the last x amount of games. I have had huge losing streaks and still been at the top position which is just ridiculous when you think about it. That is also why if you wait until the next rotation you are more likely to get out of a losing streak because they reset all of that data after each rotation. The reverse is also true, if you're on a long win streak you are matched with other who are on a long win streak (until you are close to the next level in which case you are probably more likely to be matched with someone on a losing streak near the high end of their current level). So winning begets winning and losing begets losing; that's my theory and it's based on my far too many hours of playing (You can check my miiverse and you'll see the streaks I get on). It's not that I'm getting better or worst it's that the match maker is grossly manipulated. Squad play in my opinion is a better gauge of how good you are otherwise true randomness where win/loss stats are not collected

@wisdomsprince: That doesn't really correspond to my recent experience, but now I'm curious since you mentioned it was changed during the last update. Do you have a link to the update info where it says that (getting teamed up with losers as a loser and winners as a winner)? Because that wasn't mentioned in the changelog for 2.2.0 at all.

From my experience the matchmaking has improved drastically since 2.0.0. Especially in squads. In ranked battle, the ranks of the players were usually more or less even (and if there were outliers, it was usually more or less even between the teams). But now, even in squads the ranks are more harmonized. If you play with a B and an A player for example, you don't end up fighting 4 S+ players anymore. And if there are outliers, they're better distributed between the two teams. That was definitely different before (and happened regularly).

@shani: @wisdomsprince: For the purposes of basic probability I'm going to assume that there is one person each match that is the "deciding factor", i.e., the person that the team needed to win that particular match. If you are completely average at your rank, you have a 4/9 or 44% chance to win each round depending on where the "deciding factor" gets placed. Assuming you never throw a game out your apartment window, you have to play above average (aka carry) ~11% of your games where the enemy team has the "deciding factor" in order to even out, ~46% of those games to achieve a 70% winrate.

The only person you have control over is yourself, and if you manage to be the "deciding factor" every game you'll have a 100% winrate. Or so it seems. If we factor in a "losing factor", i.e. a person that will throw the game if they are on your team despite you playing well enough to win, the probably of the "losing factor" being on your team when the "deciding factor" is also on the enemy team is 4/8, or 50%. This means to level out, you must actually carry ~22% of those games to even out, and even if you are the "deciding factor" every game, you'll still be at around a 72% chance of winning each game.

This is just an estimate and I probably have done some math wrong. I want to point out that the frustrations of matchmaking can basically come down to math, which means I should conclude...

TL:DR/Conclusion So this means that over the course of hundreds of games an average person levels out to 44% winrate, to go even you have to actually play well (better than average) 56% of your games because sometimes people will throw, and finally, unless you actually are so good that it doesn't matter if your teammates throw, you'll still at most be sitting at ~72% winrate.

Disclaimer: The reason this doesn't always seem to hold is because you stay in the same lobby with the same people, so maybe you get in a lobby with people who are all evenly matched, and there's no "losing factor" and the "deciding factor" fluctuates between the players in that lobby. In such a case, playing well enough can give you a 100% winrate! (However people will probably start leaving...)

This! There were so many games were I or someone else on my team managed to decide the match without any doubt (mostly in ranked though) and apart from very close overtime wins, that's the best feeling this game is able to give to its players. I crave that feeling and want to constantly get better at it and it's working, slowly ranking up to the top. ^^

I agree that yourself can be the deciding factor for matches, I ranked down an hour ago. But I managed to get a good winning streak going and rank up back to S+ because I decided to change up my strategies a bit. I've had many matches where I was able to turn the tide of the battle as I was able to sneak up at the enemy base so my teammates were able to Super Jump to me and splat everybody while I grabbed the Rainmaker when the opposing team was distracted.

I'm not lazy! ...I'm just very forgetful. :|

@shani: They didn't say that they match you based on that ini the latest version but the post game screen was changed to show the team based on Performance over the last X amount of matches in Ranked instead of by k/d ratio. Based on that I've just observed where I was placed based on my current w/l streaks

The only time this isn't the case is when teammate dc's on you which is how I ranked down out of S+. Should have stopped before though as servers just seemed bad that day.

My goal is getting at least A+ and I'm not that far away from it, but who knows, maybe after that I'll want to reach S too. ^^

Maybe it is just that I am bad at Splatoon, but I swear I get paired with the worst teamates in Ranked Battles. I usually go like 10-4 in Battles, but I have been stuck at B+ FOREVER!
