Too bad that people keep doing the drift jump, online. They don't even realize it makes the race basically impossible for everyone else, including others that know how to do the technique, unless they want to ruin the game on purpose.
If someone one is all far out in front because of it, they cause lag and forget that everyone behind them is still dealing with items, even if they also know the drift jump. Kind of sad.
I can jump drift, but I choose not to so I don't ruin the game for everyone else. Luckily, I'm able to stay within the top three in most races, if only one or two people are jump drifting, of course. What annoys me most about it is how the items get all mixed up. What I mean by this is, I've seen people in third use bullet bills... that just shouldn't happen! If someone is THAT far ahead, the game should automatically send out a couple blue shells or something without someone having to get the item to slow the player in first down. It is really sad how so many people do this. It's one thing to do it for a time trail, but when it affects other player's experiences, I think that's a little too far. Nintendo probably won't, but I hope they'll patch jump drifting someday in all of the modes. Then we might actually see more characters than Morton racing.
@blue_blur
That's still part of the problem, though. Not everyone knows how to do the drift jump, so that's a reason to avoid doing it, but on the otherhand, we could easily say there needs to be better servers. I just want the game to run in some form, regardless, which is why I wouldn't drift jump.
That's how I play Smash Bros, too. Even if the people you are playing have kind of crappy internet(vice versa), or distance, playing slower lets the game run fluidly, and it's still possible to win that way. It's not ideal, but I just want to play online. Xbox Live and PSN have had just as many problems on some occasions, and they are paid services.
I guess they are talking about fire hopping, which along slides and incomplete subtiering of Acceleration is patched on 200cc class that unfortunately is not played that much (200cc it is actually the patched version of Mario Kart 8, as 150cc and older classes were not really changed that much).
Sorry, what's a drift jump? I haven't really been reading this thread
The drift jump is when you drift, then start jumping from side to side, to maintain your drift speed during the jumps.
To add to this, if done successfully, it can act like a mushroom. It's a huge advantage over other racers, which is why I'm completely against it. I'm all for fair races, and fire hopping is not fair, in my opinion!
My only complaint is the lag, otherwise I would be probably fine with firehopping(if that's what people are calling it).
I used to snake in Mario Kart DS, so I've always known that there little tricks like that in games, and it didn't really bother me.
I'm honestly not really sure how a firehopping race would go with items on, without lag(or local), so that's how it's up for question anyway.
I've never got into fire-hopping or drift jumping. Whether it's fair or not, I don't care. But it's always struck me as a pretty tedious way to have to play the game, pressing the jump button all the time would seem to take the fun out of it.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
It definitely makes the game seem less fluid. Even snaking sort of made more sense than the firehopping, IMO, and I'm pretty sure most players would rather have it gone.
If they get rid of firehopping, someone will probably think Nintendo is going bankrupt
@SCAR: as I said before, firehopping is actually gone in 200cc, you can still do it but you gain pretty much nothing, same with slides. In 50cc/100cc/150cc/Mirror it was not removed likely because it would have ruined all Time Trial world records, forcing an erasure of all the posted times since it would have been impossible to obtain those times again. They are also fundamental in the competitive scene.
@Mister_Wu
I understand, but that still doesn't mean that people want to play it that way. The only reason why it is "fundamental in the competitive scene", is because it's there.
@SCAR: Of course, keep in mind however that heavywights + Blue Falcon + Slick Tires and heavyweights + Pipe Frame + Slick Tires are among the most competitive combinations. This means that, by themselves, even in 150cc the courses are quite easy to drive on, so these exploits can be seen as quite useful to keep the game interesting by creating a differential between expert players and beginners. In 200cc, with its 50% speed increase, driving is much harder, forcing brakedrifting in some turns even when using the combinations with the highest handling.
@Mister_Wu
Well, if you read my posts, I'm not against firehopping completely. I just don't want it to lag the online races or ruin online races, because the rest of the community is going to just be spamming items anyway, even other firehoppers. It doesn't matter how good you are at firehopping if no one else is even going to try to do it, either, You might as well go to Time Trials and play by yourself if no one else is gonna play it that way, which is the whole point of playing online with other people; to actually play with them.
@SCAR: Of course, it's a matter of what someone is aiming at with worldwide races. If the aim is having fun, not using firehopping and slides can be actually more relaxing and makes more sense from a racing game point of view, especially because it makes the game more fair for all players, especially those using inward drifting bikes that cannot firehop (they are coded correctly). If someone wants to train himself for competitive races, he or she should use all the techniques instead, even those based on exploit of the game's physics. VS races are never like Time Trials, so I cannot condemn someone who is using them in worldwide races, even though I generally don't use them (but that's because I am lazy, I quite like inward drifting bikes in MK8 and I tend to play 200cc anyway...).
@Mister_Wu
That is still basically ignoring the lag and the way I want to play. That's why I said either better servers or don't firehop. That's besides that MK8 servers are actually pretty good, but they still don't work that well across like 4-5 different countries, for example, and they still firehop anyway, then the match is pointless if anyone actually wants to win and is being affected by the lag the most.
I already said I didn't mind firehopping at the core and I understand what it is for, but it still ruins the online if other things like lag happen or items keep you back while 1st place is firehopping half a lap ahead. The match would be way differetn if everyone was firehopping, and not everyone is doing it, so I guess that's not competitive? I call BS, because item balance and the way a game is played.
The same thing happens in Smash 4 with tech rolls. If the lag happens and that's how I miss the tech roll, then I get my a$$ beat because of it, I'm not going to take the match seriously anymore, period. I don't even care that much in the first place, which is why I'm fine with not firehopping as long a it doesn't lag the match. That's he best I can explain it.
@SCAR: the problem of lag is a general one, and before criticizing the servers I think we should clarify their role in race management, as my previous router that despite the settings blocked most ports except those needed to connect to Nintendo Network servers still didn't allow me to join most races and made the remaining ones often very laggy and with frequent disconnections, to the point that I pretty mich stopped playing online until I bought a proper router.
This being said, lag affects much more than just the techniques, as the item probability distribution selector is mainly distance-based, which means that very often you can't get items because the game isn't able to calculate the distance from the frontrunner. Furthermore, the projectiles very often don't slow down the laggy racers because they are actually in a place different from what you are seeing and therefore are not hit in their game. The same goes in the case of collisions with them.
From what I have seen, it seems that lag is detrimental to those who are not laggy and I expect that smart laggy people will use all the techs as if they were playing a Time Trial to gain an enormous advantage over the people who aren't able to do that because of the items and other racers on the track. This notwithstanding, I don't think forcing laggy people not to use the techniques (which is not really possible in worldwide races) will be enough as they would have anyway quite an advantage over non-laggy players.
