Windwaker is definitely one of my favorite Zelda titles. I would probably place it 3rd behind Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past. It's epic, the art style is wonderful, and the game oozes more personality than any other Zelda title by a nautical mile.
My one big caveat with the game is Princess Zelda herself. Tetra is pure awesome, then when she's revealed as Princess Zelda she promptly loses all personality.
It's one of the most charming and enjoyable little games I've ever played. The HD release is especially fantastic. The art style is still gorgeous years later, too.
That said. I recognize its flaws. The sailing mechanic has always been a pain (although the HD re-release mitigates this with an awesome item that removes the need to babysit the wind) and the final Tri-Force quest is a pain. Sometimes I want to explore. Sometimes I just want to move the story forward. Integrating the exploration incentives into the entire game, instead of just the second half, would have made it even better. Also, while I did love finding hidden treasure at first, the fact that it was money 99% of the time kind of killed the excitement for me. And I'm disappointed that after being revealed as Princess Zelda, the dynamic and colorful Tetra agrees to just hide underground. Zelda is at her best when she's actively working to help Link in his quest, rather than being a damsel in distress.
Nevertheless, it is still one of my favorite Nintendo games, and my second favorite Zelda title thus far after A Link Between Worlds (although my experience with the other 3D entries is pretty limited, aside from Ocarina of Time).
I remember back when Wind Waker was first released on the Gamecube. It was so underrated back then, I might as well be hung by my peers for liking it more than Ocarina of Time. It's was mainly because of the cel-shaded "kiddy" graphics that was a put off for the "hardcore gamers" at the time. Now the style is praised. Time sure does change things. Same can be said for Majora's Mask with the whole 3 day time limit.

When did you play Wind Waker for the first time? I got the game when it first came out in 2003, and I thought the Great Sea being massive was impressive. Alot of the puzzles are move advanced, and the audio also improved by default from N64. The graphics are subjective.
If you played the remake and that was your first time playing, then I would still consider it a fun adventure, but I stress the notion that most of the "wow" factor for this game was had in 6th generation. That's besides tat most of the people who likely had fun with this game when it came out, were able to get over the "Celda" graphics.

We have a thread for unpopular opinions, so does this really need to be it's own thread?
This is a me too topic that is all, just like this is a me too quote. Seems to just want attention. That's what I get from the rather vague opening post.
Wind Waker is the best Zelda if you ask me. The sailing was relaxing, there was stuff to do at nearly every island, and before Skyward Sword it had the most you could do in one town and made it more personable with the other npc's. The dungeons might of been easy but I had fun in each and everyone.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
Alright, I don't think I can agree with anything else you ever say, ever.
All joking aside, Wind Waker is the best Zelda in my opinion. Great art style, poignant storyline, a super refreshing sailing / pirate theme. Plus, the dungeons - they're just the right size, really. I never understood why people liked long, overblown dungeons that far overstay their welcome, like the ones in Twilight Princess.
And of course, there's the absolutely amazing soundtrack.
The sailing parts could be a little long and the number of dungeons was dissapointing. Other than that, it's amazing. Ocarina is still my favourite but WW is a close second. The sense of exploration so central to Zelda has never been more profound than in Wind Waker.
Then again, every home console TLoZ since and including(!!!) OoT has been at least slightly overrated in my book.
My biggest gripes with TWW though are
1.: obviously, the flawed sailing mechanics, which I strongly suspect was just a cheap way to thin out the game contents.
2.: some questionable design decisions. Like, if I didn't figure this must be "Hyrule", I would've had a hard time recognizing it. Just because Link pulls out the Master Sword from a stone in LttP, doesn't mean the whole frickin' game suddenly takes place in ol' England instead of the Mediterranian.
Other than that: too much scripting, too little (relevant) mystery and exploration.
I do like the game's visuals though — except that stupid permanent depth blur, which seems to merely serve as an excuse to force the player into using the telescope more often, just to get a frickin' sharp image!
I could go on about the gameplay flaws windwaker but that's beating a dead horse.
Instead I'll talk about the graphics.
Now before i continue I will say I do NOT hate cell shading.
I just hate wind waker's version of cell shading tales of vesperia as example of cell shading weird the in game models don't look deformed.
also bright and colorful is fine but wind waker could have been more subtle about it.

Windwaker is my absolute favorite Zelda title. The world was huge, the sailing was fun, the music was awesome and the personality in general was cute and epic at the same time. Link here had the most personality of any Link before him or since. And the battle! The music cues whenever you landed a hit were excillerating!
Overall I don't think Windwaker is overrated at all. In fact it got a lot of hate at the time and I'm very glad people have come around to recognizing its greatness and giving it the love it deserves.
I think it's a fantastic game that gets just a bit too much praise. The fetch quest at the end really hurts it, and sailing around is just too empty, and what you see around you while doing so isn't as varied and interesting as other Zelda games.
Runs circles around Skyward Sword, though.
Best thread ever

Ye, well, that's what happens when a game is literally, objectively one of the greatest games ever made. To anyone who finds it less than perfect, it's "overrated."
Water is a choking hazard, so while absolutely essential to life, it is a little overrated.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
Its a really good game, but not the best Zelda ever. Not even in my personal top 5. OOT and TP and Link to Past are my top, followed by LOZ 1, Between Worlds, SS and MM, then windwaker is in my next group of Zelda games, which by no means am I saying they are bad. Zelda games IMO set the bar for all action adventure games. They are not always the best games of a generation, but its hard to argue and say Skyward Sword is a bad game compared to any other series. it just isn't the best Zelda ever. (Personally I felt like SS was almost too good. It lacked exploration and the feeling of getting lost, but the controls and overall game more then made up for it. I wish a game like dark souls had SS controls. )
