Sonic definitely went more casual for a while but seems like the series has pulled itself back from its worst, Mario on the other hand seems to be going in the opposite direction to me; with the news of a new Mario game becoming less and less exciting especially with NSMB overload; where coin spam seems to pass as a good idea for some reason not werehog levels of bad but its not exactly up there with past Mario game levels of progression; kind of due to its quick fire nature of releases lately I imagine.

Yes, Mario has been getting less impressive lately. However it would have to continue declining at that rate for another 10 years before it hits the level of Sonic.
I don't think Mario is going to hit Sonic 06 levels of bad at least I hope not; but to me and I know I'm in the minority in saying this but I haven't been blown away by a Mario game since Mario 64; not that Mario was my fav platform series on a Nintendo machine that's Wario as far as I'm concerned; more Wario please Nintendo!!!
I've tried all of the first 4 warioland games. I had to force myself through all of them until I decided it was enough.
To me every one was bland and it got boring so easily.
If I were to make a list of my favorite games ever, it would probably be littered with Mario titles, and while I like many Sonic games, the only entry I really "love" is Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
dude, even if you don't like the games, this is just factually wrong. Like the sequels especially are...weird and intentionally not bland.
To me, the games are bland. Whatever you may believe - it's still your opinion, and just that.
What makes the Warioland series distinctive? Weird looking bosses? How dull...
Mario: 15
Sonic: 5
Updated the vote to keep something on topic. I think it's fair to say Mario has won though
Although the actual gameplay is improved in the sequel, and the star coins are harder to find, the original is still better. The original had the minigames and custom made multiplayer levels, and felt like it had some extra effort put into it. NSMB2 sadly feels like it was rushed out as soon as possible just to sell 3DS'. The plan worked...but it has a cost. *Cue dramatic music i guess?
@Geonjaha, I only voted for NSMB2 because I simply think the level designs are much more clever. NSMB was too simple at times, while definitely more original. I think in terms of the New Super Mario Bros. mini series of games, they're getting progressively better as each new one comes out.
But they're making such little progress compared to every other mario game sequel ever released. The fact that NSMB2 was released already shows a lack of originality - but taking out the minigames and custom multiplayer levels was just cutting corners. I do much prefer the main quest's gameplay in the sequel - but the levels are soul-less, forgettable, still overly simplified, and just an insult to the franchise.
